That was an abysmal comma-splice.

I need to learn how to post.
More importantly, why are 33 guests browsing this section?

Anyone here good at classical mechanics and bored enough to help me with some homework? :oops2:

I'm listening.
Assuming it's not too late which it probably is, since it's eleven hours later.

Unfortunately, but having it done at all is better than nothing I suppose.

I'll draw a mock up of the question: http://imgur.com/3Wv63XZ
I just can't remember all the steps, I got as far as T-9.8cos(60) = 4*a (for the 4kg) and (4a-T + 6a+T = 10a) = (9.8cos(60) + 9.8 = 14.7) so 10a = 14.7, a = 1.47 (for the 6kg) but I've made so many mistakes I don't know where to start...
Don't feel obliged to help though if it's too boring, I shouldn't really be asking other people to do my homework for me in the first place :P

Oh lord, I'm remembering my A Level Mechanics and first year Mechanics module, I don't remember too much now, but I vaguely recall stuff like equating horizontal and vertical components, which is what you've done, I think.

Okay, finally got around to digitizing what I did. I put together a solution at https://www.vigovproductions.net/AmbidProb.pdf which wasn't an entirely selfless act, since it gave me a chance to brush up on my LaTeX! I tried to explain each step, so I wasn't just "doing it for you"! :P And of course it's possible, since I haven't touched pulleys in two years, and never really liked them, that I made some stupid mistake. :fou:
Either way, does it help?

Ah, of course! I totally forgot you had to multiply the mass by G to find the force due to gravity. Thanks for going to all the trouble, I was really lost for a while there

PluM's right indeed, though he could have made a1 prettier, like g(m1sin(α)-m2)/(m1+m2).

If memory serves it was PluM's "father".
I think they were stalking you, inco.

Or it was yet another invasion. They're much better at breaking such records than our members.

The 2005 record seems pretty pathetic in comparison to now.

Yeah, that's pretty much why we never tried again.

And then have to sub in the values with units, and write a fraction with loads of ugly "kg"s in it? No thanks! :mefiant:

Nah, I was mainly referring to the fact the idea became the RD.

Who evaluates their expressions themselves anyway? That's what computers are for. :P

Not exactly, it certainly was an inspiration but the first record day originated from a stunningly active day which we wondered if we could beat.

It's still right and proper to keep track of units though, so I wouldn't feel right without writing it out first! :mefiant:
