It looks awesome, too bad it's scrapped.

I tried, but I really can't decode any of the level files in R3 so it's not that easy... Now you've sparked my interest though, so I might look at the files again to see if there's any description for how to unlock the minigames... or at least a description for the minigame itself.
Also, I think someone should try Haruka's idea of plugging Rayman Advance in. It sounds very plausible.

That image looks absolutely awesome. The actual 2D Madness in Dream forest always looked lazy.

That image is old, it was in the Rayman 3 screenshot gallery from the original RZ in 2003.

As of how to unlock it, nobody has found a way to do so yet, which means nobody knows for sure it exists at all. The most logical way to unlock it always seemed clearing all of the minigames, as the GameCube version marks cleared minigames with a red circle right from their selection in the menu. However, clearing all singleplayer minigames doesn't unlock it, and the multiplayer (those GBA tetris/shoe games) don't get marked no matter how high the score. So I'm assuming those 2 MP games marked with the GBA icon don't count.

I might plug in my GameCube and GBA cable again in order to try a few things, but honestly, I had already given up on this minigame long ago. Nice to see that screenshot popping up every now and then!

Otto, Romeo, anybody else:

I read a Gamespot walkthrough for Rayman 3 for the PS2 and the Rayman 3 walkthrough did mention Mad Trax, 2D Madness and Wheelis.

It exists.

Even if it were not for this proof, I would still find it difficult to believe that Ubisoft would create a fake but convincing screenshot to add to their official gallery.

Such text line is not necessarily proof of this minigame's existance, it could just as much refer to the 'Sometimes Rayman dreams' introduction line in 2D Madness, or something completely unrelated. And for that screenshot, Ubisoft has posted quite a few 'fake' or 'early' screenshots from their games back then, and of course RZ's webmaster couldn't do a reality check on the media he received to put online.

No, the only kind of proof that can convince me is to either see files like map data, textures, or even better, the minigame in action on my GameCube!

Tried a few things. I can confirm that simply inserting Rayman Advance doesn't do anything. It's just Rayman 3 GBA on the GC bonus world (left from the world map) that's triggering the action. On a side note, there also was an 11th bonus level on GBA rumoured, never saw anything of that either. 1000 Lums gives you the 10th bonus level, and clearing all 10 doesn't trigger anything on Rayman 3 GC.

To continue the search, has anybody got some experience with Mad Trax/Wheelis? I started Mad Trax again, on my own, and saw that there wasn't a 'Best Time' saved. Is this minigame clearable? I played it with my bro long ago, but I don't think we ever got to the exit. If we did, it didn't mark the minigame as being cleared. Wheelis is impossible for me since I don't have a 2nd GBA cable.

It’s not just the text line. The name ‘2D Nightmare’ was first used in a Rayman 3 walkthrough on Neoseeker, in reference to a hidden GameCube-exclusive minigame distinct from 2D Madness. CheatCat discovered the line of text a long time afterwards, confirming the walkthrough’s validity. I don’t see how the line could refer to ‘something completely unrelated’; it must refer to a minigame, just like the Xovar and chess minigame descriptions. I can see why Ubisoft might create fake screenshots that are actually representative of the game’s content, but I would be very surprised to learn that they went to the trouble of creating a screenshot of a completely non-existent minigame for no reason at all (and from what I’ve heard they even posted a description of some sort to go along with it). Where can I view some of these other fake screenshots? Are there any other instances of them having gone to such lengths to create fake information about the game? Either way, there’s also the presence in the GameCube version of a final minigame slot filled with question marks to consider.

I don’t think Mad Trax and Wheelis are necessary for unlocking 2D Nightmare, though it might be best to complete them both just in case. I’m assuming you’ve got all 1000 Yellow Lums in the GBA version (including the final hidden one), you’ve broken all fifty cages, gotten a high score in the GameCube version (with smiling Murfy stamps for all levels), completed all normal minigames in the GameCube version, as well as breaking all sixty of its cages, finished both games completely and completed all of the minigames which can be downloaded from the GameCube to the GBA? I believe syntheticgerbil has done all of these things but has still not been able to unlock 2D Nightmare; I thought perhaps it was due to a bug or error in his/her copy of one of the games, but if you too have done all of these things and still had no success, then the problem must be more widespread than I thought.

Here’s a novel idea that just occurred to me a moment ago:

To unlock Mad Trax, you have to connect a GBA to the GC. To unlock Wheelis, you have to connect two GBAs to the GC.
To unlock 2D Madness, you have to connect a GBA containing R3 to the GC. To unlock 2D Nightmare... do you have to connect two GBAs containing R3 to the GC?

I've done all of those, except completing Wheelis and Mad Trax. I've got both Mad Trax and Wheelis unlocked, though I only played Mad Trax due to the fact that I only have 1 GBA cable. And completing those GBA minigames seemed to be the only possibility left...

Good thinking! That idea seems pretty plausible. I mean, there are 3 open slots that accept a Rayman 3 GBA connection, and maybe they could operate all at once. Too bad I haven't got 2 GBA cables (and 2 copies of Rayman 3)..

I only have 1 cable and 1 GBA SP, so I couldn't do that kind of test.

Wasn’t there a magazine whose cover had a picture of Rayman in bed with Pamela Anderson or something?
