Man, Rayman 1's art is so good, even in concept form!

I've been a BIG Rayman 1 fan since playing on both the Game Boy Color and Playstation. I especially love the music as well, like Cloak of Darkness. And not to mention the levels were great too. My favorite ones were the Dream Forest, Band Land, and the Cave of Skops. Rayman 1 has been a huge classic for me, and I love it.

A bit of an odd comparison but does anybody else think the music was inspired (or at least some of it) form China? Upon trying to break Rayman 1 down to its foundation of inspiration, I noticed some songs such as "Meditating Monks" and "Mysterious Gongs" which is clearing from Chinese Origins or Indian. Did Rémi Gazel ever sate the inspiration for the music, if any?

I think that is obvious, personally.

I think that it is very possible that at least some music was inspired by Chinese music. Rayman himself was inspired by Chinese fairy tales from what I remember was said.

Hmm, you sure you're not mixing it up with Celtic? I don't remember hearing about Chinese fairy tales.

Im not sure what inspired his design. I know Chinese mythology and Celtic fairy tales were involved along with Russian mythology. But Im not sure witch one of those were design inspiration. I know some of the music had to have been inspired by Eastern origins. Mostly pertaining to China and India origins. With songs with more rock mostly the boss themes sounds more related to Western origins (Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, etc...) Songs such as "Deep In The Cave" and maybe "Peaceful Peaks" which uses a Pan-Flute heavily are still puzzling to me. I take it he wanted to give the sound a more organic feel such as the cave and mountains them self. One thing a found about the instrument itself is that it has Chinese and European origins. Fascinating.

Ancel drew inspiration from a movie called "The Dark Crystal", and from that same info we can confirm that there was Celtic inspiration behind Rayman, perhaps that carried over into the music.
But yeah, there was probably a variety of sound influencing the OST, makes sense when the world itself also goes back and forth with surreal environments and more natural looking areas. I'm not sure if certain traditional styles or cultures are were the big picture though, seeing as Band Land has some jazz going on and Picture City's sound seems to go along with its abstract appearance.

I wasn’t sure where to post this so I’m posting it here – I found a Rayman 1 prototype screenshot while I was browsing the PlayStation Datacenter!

-----[edit]-----
I always knew PAL Rayman 1 was slower on ps1. Seriously the PAL version is like slo-mo mode.

I like how they constantly say how "good" this game is. Like: "The World's Greatest Action Hero" "The best platform game ever for the Playstation"
"Best Character"
"Best Animation"
"Best Soundtrack"

I've seen that screenshot being used in a few magazines here and there before, though it's not common.
As for the speedrun I'm pretty surprised by a number of things, such as that the game can be beaten without battling Mr Sax - that might be worth mentioning on the wiki. Didn't realise that a Sonic 3 style glitch (it was done in Bongo Hills I think) could be done either. I even chipped in when it finished, really impressed with what's been pulled off.

The Mr Sax thing is pretty known altho i knew it because I optimized my TAS with this. And on GBA you can even do it without beating Skops.
The "sonic 3 style glitch" is a zipping and has been discovered on TAS and is like 2 years old, it's doable on non-tas easily. There's also clipping through slopes but it's TAS only. Although I say BRAVO! to Spikevegeta because he did an awesome execution, there was nothing new in the run and all Rayman 1 speedrunners/tasers (if me and scrimpeh count) knew almost 99% of what was going on there
