The solution was
G A Z E
Looks like I was right about the small words being confusing. With big words you have more chance of a letter being correct and with small ones it's the opposite. Just think of how many words in the English language actually have _ A _ E in them.
With a big word the answer becomes obvious after a few letters usually.
What happens now then?
