Isn't it illegal to directly fund a fangame? I know this shouldn't be a problem here since Ad said before that the money will mostly go to equipment (and his client) but as you said kickstarter is way too open, and ubisoft will surely notice a kickstarter about their own title/product and will presumably decline it.

That is a fair point, plus, Kickstarter is known to be a bit dubious when it comes to funding. If Ad did put this up on Kickstarter, there's no guarantee the money would be sent, since if memory serves, you need to hit the target first.

Indeed. RPC isn't exactly likely to catch the attention of the masses, and I don't think anyone important would care if I was doing this anyway, because I'm commissioning a freelancer for a single asset.

I feel like a (more personal) patroen could work though, if you just won't mention the fangame in it and say it's just for "technical equipment" or something and put your name on it I feel like there shouldn't be any problem.

Why hire only one guy... From bigger action you can hire more people. It can be just for push development further

I just insinuated why: Hiring people to work on a fan project with you is also not really legal.

Besides, I wouldn't make nearly enough on Patreon at this point to start paying people. Paying people is stupidly expensive - even if I'm sinkimg $50 per-month into each person, if I have ten people, that's 500 per-month I've lost, and $50 is so small it's basically worthless.
