Croc 2 unfortunately has got compactibility issues in PS2 consoles (one of the fewest PS1 games that have got indeed compactibility problems with the sucessor), there are sound glitches. However PS3s do not have this issue.
If players have got a chance, I definitely recommend the PC version for the best looking graphics, quick framerate and responsive controls. The PS1 version in the other hand is more challenging because Croc starts with 3 Heart Points instead of the 5 of PC version.
Although I also like Croc 2 a lot, having a more heart touching story, I think I enjoy Croc 1 a little more for very specific reasons:
- Croc 2's Gobbos look different, ugglier. Where are their tails? Why triangular heads? I believe it might have been to make the 3D design easier, although in Croc 1 their fur was made of textures. The Croc 2 artwork still shows Gobbos with the original design of Croc 1 so I never considered the Croc 2 in-game look as a real thing.
- I think the hub exploration made the game looking easier and less challenging than the first game, that owned a classic structure of jumping level after level.
- I kinda dislike how different Dante looks in Croc 2, but that's just me. I prefer the original design.

Whaaat? How can you play the first with an analog stick? I have never been able to do that! Croc 2 on the other hand is the exact opposite. I'm not able to play that game with the d-pad. I find Croc 2 to be a lot easier than Croc 1 and I can see why it's gotten a lot of flack, but it was still a very good, fun, and obnoxiously cute game with a great soundtrack. My only real complaint was how underwhelming the boss battle themes could be. They start out fantastically, but you'd expect so much more than what's presented. Lava Lamp Larry's is probably the best example of this I can give.
I never knew those were compatibility issues with the PS2, I had always assumed my disc was just damaged. My brother used to take very poor care of our games, and growing up, pretty much any game we had for PSX were for the whole family and so I had no say in what he could and couldn't play. We lost Crash Team Racing, Crash Bandicoot Warped, our R2 TGE disc is damaged, and we lost our original copy of R3 because of him and it was so difficult to find another working copy for the PS2.
I always figured the reason the gobbos were so different was to kind of give them more depth so they weren't just these cute little fuzzballs that Croc lived amongst. I didn't have very much of an issue with their strange redesign. Dante, though, I think they could have done better at his "redesign". At least the final battle in Croc 2 was actually a bit of a challenge, unlike the first where it was considerably easy to beat him.

I can ensure its a compactibility issue because not only I had knowledge of more people having the very same issue, aswell I own a scratchless PS1 disc. And it seems you can't do anything to fix it, not even by setting up the CD speed.
The musician of Croc 2 is the same one from the first game, but I think the first game had much stronger musics. I also like a lot the Croc 2 musics, but I think there's something missing on them.

The soundtrack of the second game I felt was just as good as the first, but at times it felt like the person composing the music either wasn't sure where he was going with the piece or ran out of steam part way through. I've considered doing a sort of reimagining of some of the duller tracks from the second game, but I haven't found the time to do so yet.
I was finally able to get past the sheep in the 3rd level of the first game flawlessly, but the puzzle piece island didn't become available. I was revisiting an old save file that I had already completed the first four worlds, and I'm only missing the few puzzle pieces that came along with the series of levels that had something like the sheep as a requirement to get either a gobbo or coloured crystal. However, when I started a new save file and tried the same thing (successfully, I might add. Thank you by the way) the puzzle island did appear.

Ah you unlocked the secret Crystal Island, congratulations! (And you're welcome)
Be prepared for the toughest 4 levels of the game, while I pick "Trial of Nile" as the champion.

It feels really good to have finally beaten that game without the use of codes after all these years. The final levels aren't that hard once you finally find some crystals to pick up. The thing that always used to get me was how easy it was to lose lives starting the levels because there'd be hazards everywhere instantly and no crystals in sight. Crystal Dante has to be one of the easiest bosses, and that's a bit disappointing. He's got the coolest design, though.

According to official sources, the Secret Sentinel is Dante's attempt to reincarnate. The fact that Croc took away a crystal as a souvenir might explain why Dante has got an eye patch in the sequel. I like these bits of trivia.

Wow, really? I had never known that. That's actually pretty cool and I think I can dismiss the odd eye patch in the second game now. I had always thought it was just one of those silly you beat this guy before but this is a kids game and we can't actually show you maiming the antagonist so we just slap on a typical battle wound cliches, but to think you might have actually taken his eye upon defeating his attempt to reincarnate on his own is a much cooler thought. It's a little morbid, too.

I saw USA copies on eBay, good luck in getting it!
I think those reviewers were Mario fanboys paid to bash the game.

When I recommend this game, I am serious. I am sure that Rayman 2 fans in particular will enjoy the Croc series.

Heck, this series is definitely underrated. Tried it after Rayman 2. I fell in love with it due to its similarities. I just wish the series wasn't canned before they were about to make the third game. I would have been SO happy! D:

Well, maybe some day someone will pick the series back up and we'll either see remakes or a third installment. With any luck it won't suck.

I think I should replay these games, I'm sad to say I actually haven't beat either of them.
