We've thought of some new ideas as to how to getting the game running on a modern PC that don't involve searching for a needle in a haystack, so I'll let you know how it turns out

Okay! I hope it turns out well.

The tests have proven that the game will not work on any modern PC, or at least one with modern CD drives/drivers, which means I do not have to worry about USB CD Drives.
The options for me now are:
[*]See what happens to the game if an older CD drive is plugged into a modern computer
[*]Look into capture cards (EG. price, how they work, if it would cause problems on a bloated PC etc.) for getting footage of the machine we know the game works on. If anyone has any advice on this I'd be grateful
[*] Build a computer old enough to run the game but powerful enough to run the recording software
This is by far, the hardest Rayman game yet

I'd say go with plugging the older CD drive into a modern computer first. It seems like the option most likely to work, to me. Although, I don't have as much technological knowledge as you! XD

Works just fine. I'm using a great DVD drive from 1999 and one from 2000, and they work great.

A capture card is a capture card, it hardly matters how old the device is, as long as it can give visual feed. Also, capture cards don't rely on the system's performance, as they work externally (at least most of them do).

£25 without the recording software, because you're using recording
hardware baby.

So you're saying this really could work?

Easily. It's not very hard to set up a 90's system, all you need to do is... set up a 90's system. We all had them (unless you're a lame 2000'er). Old parts are easily found in virtually any computer or vintage shop for extraordinarily cheap prices (because they're worthless), and Windows 98 is about the easiest and most legal thing anyone can pirate.

Yeah, we have a couple of old machines lying aroud the house waiting to have a copy of 95 installed on them

Why do 98 when you can use 98?

Assuming the sentence is meant to say 'Why do 95' - eh, both would do the job fine, although Windows 95 is defiantly less bloated and crashes far far less, so for a computer that's meant to lightweight, it might be better

We're talking about building a faster old school computer to get the game running

Ahhh, okay, so you're going to take parts of a 95 and combine it with parts of a modern computer to make a supercomputer that can capture and tame the tricky and miscievous Rayman Accompagnement Scolaire AND recording software?

No, just old hardware. It isn't compatible with newer hardware. And like I just said above, capture cards are external hardware, not software, therefore, like I just said, it doesn't matter how weak or powerful your computer is.

Yup, if I do have to make a new computer I'm not adding any modern stuff due to the risk that it'll stop Rayman CP from working again

.
EDIT: It's looking more like I won't have to build a new computer if I have to resort to making the play-through retro style as the Packard Bell has an S Video slot

. I'd like to try experimenting with older CD drive in an XP machine before I deal with that though (Clue: I doubt it will succeed

)

In my head, I replaced anything I didn't fully understand in this post with 'Betilla's magic baguette'.

So how many baguette's were there in total?

Three magic baguettes.

Basically, I thought that the Packard Bell (the only computer I have ever been able to get Rayman CP to run on, and thus how I discovered the magic of baguettes) would be too slow for getting videos of the game with, so I was thinking of building a new computer that would be old enough to run Rayman CP (with an old CD drive and a copy of Windows 95, because anything else won't run the fussy game

) but fast enough to get the videos with.
However, the Packard Bell computer turns out to have something called an S Video slot, which basically means I can use something called a capture card to get videos of the game rather then something like Hypercam. Using a capture card you can record footage from anything, whether it be a computer, TV or a console like a PlayStation or a Mega drive. This is how a lot of people who don't like using emulators like DOSbox and EPSXE get videos of games onto you-tube.
The other thing I wanted to try was plugging in a really old CD drive into a new computer, as Rayman CP is so weird it doesn't work with new Cd drives.
Bah, this probably doesn't make any sense either, I prefer the baguette explanation

Ah, okay! That sounds good.
And the baguette explanation works well too, doesn't it?
