Cause the SNes couldn't handle it and the 64 wasn't available yet?

I'm pretty sure it's be able to handle Rayman 1. Wouldn't it? It's just a cartoony 2D platformer, like alot of other SNES games...

It was just a suggestion, but Rayman was never released on a 16-bit console though. Moreover, from what I've seen of SNes games, they're all terribly ugly compared to Rayman.
After a quick search, I've also discovered that the SNes couldn't handle more than 32768 colours, while the Jaguar box of Rayman claims to use 65000 colours. Tends to prove me right.

Really? It seems to me then, that they probably used waaaay more colours than they needed, I never would've guessed that. Also, although mostly true, I wouldn't say all SNES games are ugly. Have you ever played Donkey Kong Country?

Never, but I've just looked for pictures of it, and it's still obvious that it uses much less colours than Rayman. But I'm sure the graphics were great for the console

Snes used 128 colors usually, TOTAL set (selection of colours for palette) was 15-bit. (In this sense, DOS PC supported about 260 thousands of colours.) But Hunch is kinda right - Nintendo selled then something called Virtual Boy. And don't call these games ugly - you eventually can call it "not rich". "Poor".
