< thought that one can only fail with F but maybe it is different in Germany.

For < here, E is a low pass, it might not be a fail, but in the grand scheme of things, it certainly isn't helpful when one is trying to aim at Cs and above for final grades.

< Thinks when ^ gets an E, it stands for EXCELLENT!
