Now i'm absolutely certain.
Ok I'm going to requote this to answer your question.
Steo wrote:Well Rayman 2 was released the exact same time as the Dreamcast (except for Japan where it came out a year before that), so my assumption would be just that they had been optimising the Dreamcast version while expecting the Saturn version to not sell very well if it was to be released. The PS2 didn't come out until a year after the Dreamcast in America & Europe and it was around a year and a half in Japan from the Dreamcast release date. The GameCube came out way later, almost 2 years later than PS2.

So basically they would have thought hmm, the new SEGA is coming out, we'll port it to that because it'll be more powerful. Then the fact that the PS2 came out in NA & EU a year later explains Rayman 2's release on PS1, while the GameCube being far later (2002) simply explains the N64 version.

I can only guess that because the Dreamcast came out so early in Japan that they were planning to do that all along and skip Saturn.

If it had been on Saturn, I assume it would have ran a little better than the PS1 version. Either way they'd both be 240p and probably still capped to 30fps (25fps in EU).

I still would have liked to see the game on Saturn myself though to be honest, the Saturn is a pretty good console :)
mohmaI wrote:Hi guys, it was a while since I was asking myself a question...

Suppose that Sega did not take the "longest step of his leg" with the consequences that we all know by now, and kept the Sega Saturn for the same amount of time that lasted PlayStation and Nintendo 64 (until 2000 and 2001 respectively).
The development of the final version of Rayman 2 would probably have been entrusted (as in the case of PlayStation) to the Ubi Soft's Shanghai division. But this is just an hypothesis generated in analogy with the excellent work that in fact only the asian programmers were able to do in this excellent conversion adapted from 64-bit to the 32-bit PlayStation's hardware and where the difference for a game like that is not indifferent.

Now, everyone knows that the Sega Saturn was certainly a console of fine workmanship and able to match PlayStation hardware, but it's known that the games were difficult to program to get 100% of them and also that the machine was not able to offer a 3D like PlayStation, but a 2D just above that of PlayStation.
Moreover, the limits of the Sega Saturn can be deduced from some graphic effects absent in the versions dedicated to this one and from the full motion video much less fluid than the PlayStation version: see Wipeout for mention one.

At this point my question is simple, if at the end of the '90s the Sega Saturn remained among the direct competitors of the period (then PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Nintendo 64) as in fact had to be and the dreamcast had been produced later, maybe in the same period of playstation 2, gamecube and xbox inserting therefore in its context, that of 128bit, what would have been the final result of Rayman 2 converted on Sega Saturn? The game would have been the same or given the limits of the 3D of the Sega Saturn this version would have been worse than the PlayStation version?

In short, the final result in terms of resolution, video/audio quality, fluidity, frames and content (ie levels, graphic effects, etc.) it would have been equal, worse or better than that of PlayStation?

We always talk about the final version of the game, the 3D one clearly. Not the 2D prototype. I'm waiting for your answers.
Now, answer MY question....why do you keep making several accounts for the purpose of asking the exact same question?
For first I've lost my password, and finally I would like more detailed answers almost omitting the dreamcast and hypothesizing Rayman 2 (the final 3D version) on Sega Saturn vs PlayStation 1. So 32-bit system vs 32-bit system.
I do not care about the dreamcast, frankly said.

I would like a more accurate explanation about whether the Sega Saturn was actually able to hold a video game of that scope (given its poor 3D quality, let's be clear!) like the PlayStation version and, if yes, what were the differences? In summary, would it have been better, equal or worse on the Sega Saturn?
I ask because on full 3D, the limits of the Sega machine were quite evident.

Sincerely, I have not received satisfactory answers on my previous post.

I see, my apologies for sounding a little rude then. Word of advice to you then: write your password down somewhere so you don't forget it.

I have no real answer to your question at this time, sorry! :oops2:

As I said, "hypothetically" the game would run better on Saturn than the PS1 version did, but the game was released for Dreamcast instead. I think that basically explains exactly what you asked

I'm sure you could have pressed "forgot password" and had an email sent to you to reset it :?

I know. Unfortunately, the premature disappearance of the Sega Saturn leaves only room for hypothesis.

What do you suppose? I saw that in 3D the PlayStation makes much better. What do you mean to run better? Just in fluidity maybe? In terms of fps?
But I think that in resolution it would have been worse on Sega Saturn.

The Saturn is more powerful than the PS1, so it wouldn't suffer as many FPS drops and if they uncapped the framerate on both, it would constantly be a higher framerate. As I said though they're capped at 30FPS (NTSC) and 25FPS (PAL) where as the Dreamcast is 60FPS.

By they're I mean the versions of Rayman 2 would be capped on them as most others are too.

It's more powerful in theory, but in practice the 3D games or are similar among the machines (with evident limits on the Saturn) or are way better on PlayStation. PlayStation is better in 3D rendering and yet sometimes it also struggles to hold a game like Rayman 2, let alone Saturn. That's why I'm not entirely convinced.

I have heard that programming for the Saturn was supposed to be harder, so there's always the possibility that a game could be badly ported to it and perform more sluggish. I guess unless someone is so experienced that then can literally port the game to Saturn themselves like a homebrew, then we may never truly know.

Maybe someone more experienced in game developing could be more helpful than me in this case, but I just thought I'd give you my 2 cents on the matter.

The reason for the Atari-history.com site is probably because the dev that left this in used to work on some Arcade machine/board (I checked his LinkedIn :P). So he is/was probably an Arcade/Atari enthusiast and decided to leave this easter egg in.

I hope the next Rayman game expands on Rayman 2's lore like the Muse.

I have no idea how you're supposed to hit no switches though. I was hoping there'd be gameshark codes for low gravity or the super helicopter, but there doesn't seem to be anything like that.

Wouldn't there be a way to find all the cheat codes by looking in the game files or something?

People have invented RayTwol and everything but still didn't know about this, so looking through the files won't get you everything. I know RayTwol is for PC, but it's just if someone was experienced enough with the game to invent that, but never figured that out, then it just shows there's far more Easter eggs in these games than we would have imagined.

Let's just say it isn't a coincidence that I figured out how these texts are triggered ;)

The original Rayman was originally in development for the Atari ST so this might be a reference to that.

Rayman 1 is also on Atari Jaguar and Atari was the original plan for the game before PS1 came out. Funny enough Sony were saying that 2D was old news and they want to push the limits of 3D

Bunnieblaster obviously did datamine. :P I know the PC version doesn't have either of these Easter Eggs, since it does not contain these strings of text.
