Nope, pretty much anyone can become a partner. Years ago, I got an e-mail offering me a partnership. And my Youtube account is a whole lot of nothing and shit. :V

There may be a small subscriber/view cap that I'm unaware of and I passed, but it can't be that big if I passed it.

I remember they used to hand out monetization to fairly popular channels and I believe that if you proved successful enough you received Partner options but I guess they realised it makes a few additional millions to let everyone have it.

I've wanted to do something with my YouTube account for some time now, but without proper resources, it's just there so I can have the organisation features of the place, and talk to the odd fellow too.

For reference, my Youtube channel currently has 24 subscribers, and 8,829 views across all of my videos. And I got that e-mail a few years ago (though my most popular videos are from then).

Before 2011? Thats a bit surprising.

Hm, I made my YouTube in late 2010, if I recall correctly, it's changed quite a bit since then.

At the end of 2009 (or it might have been the beginning of 2010), I was actually quite surprised to have received an email asking to become a partner. I've been on YouTube since mid-2007 though, and I had just then passed the 1,000,000 views barrier; perhaps it had something to do with that?

I just checked, and I've almost reached five million video views. Neat.

I'm creating a game based off the franchise of another company. There's no faster way to get a cease and desist than by earning revenue off of something like that, on top of other, actual legal fines.
