Psychics are my favourite type although it's a bit silly having them so overpowered in Gen 1. I do find it amusing though how they managed to make a bug that meant that ghost type moves aren't super effective against them.

Bug types however i've never been a huge fan of, only one I used in game was Butterfree in Leaf Green simply because I liked the fact it could learn Psychic (I think? I mind it learns confusion at a low level so i'm assuming it can do Psychic on top of that).

You have to teach Butterfree Psychic using TMs. It does learn Psybeam through leveling up though, if I recall correctly.

And luckily they balanced things out. Now if I'm faced with a team full of psychic types, I feel like it's a fair match, especially with the introduction of the dark type and more bug/ghost moves that are actually worth using. If I don't have a defense against psychic types, it's entirely my fault for not filling the hole in my strategy.

Butterfree is a great help against Brock if you haven't a Squirtle.

Ah yes I might've meant that.

Anyway I do tend to go for Squirtle, picking Water starters seem to be a thing for me since Emerald.

Lel, butterfree is the most overpowered Pokémon for the first bit of the game.

Just train a Butterfree to learn Confusion and see how Brock surrenders.

You could do the same with a Mankey or female Nidoran, too.

Once Gen 3 came along though, Charmander was able to learn metal claw and that took a lot of the challenge out of the first gym.

It learns it at Level 13 though, so unless you grind it'd be more worth your while picking up the other 3 pokemon. And even then it doesn't help with Misty.

I always pick the fire starter. As for the grinding though, it doesn't take all too long. I already had a Charmeleon at level 18 by the time I reached Brock. Only about an hour's worth of grinding.

An hours worth of grinding? Heck I can't stand the thought of 10 minutes of grinding. Only reason i'd ever do it is if I really was struggling with the gym leaders/pokemon league.

It all varies depending on your playing style. If you grind early on you can usually get to Saffron without having to stop to train a single time on the way. From what I've noticed, most people will focus their training entirely on their starter for the first 3-4 gyms before starting to change up their team, so if they pick Charmander first it will probably have already learned metal claw upon reaching Brock, while the rest of their pokemon will still be the level they were when they were first caught.

I always focus in keeping my party balanced in the levels. If my strongest PKMN is at level 10, I spend a while to make all at level 10. Its way easier to challenge gym leaders like this.

For me it depends on what Pokemon are available at the start, as I said I would start with Squirtle in Kanto but i'd still pick up a Butterfree and a Mankey because I want those pokemon on my team. When I played Black 2 it took me until 3rd gym to pick up my second party member.

I like catching every pokemon available and training them equally at the start, then if their performance in battle pleases me I keep them on my party for pretty much the entire rest of the game. It's gotten me some pretty interesting casual party combinations. When I don't feel like doing that I just stick to making a team of my favourites.

I usually only train two or three Pokémon at a time so they get really powerful. I catch things along the way, but I don't use them until I've hit a certain threshold that I'm happy with for my two or three trained Pokémon. At that point I swap out the two or three I normally use for a new two or three, training them up real good, and so on.

Is it me or are fire types often the best? I mean Torchic was freaking awesome in the Hoenn region.
I'm playing Pokemon Emerald as of now, and you guys will laugh at how much I trained my Treeko for in Little root town, level 16-17 about, already evolved, in Little Root Town XDD

My choice of starters is pretty inconsistent. It goes something like: Charmander, Cyndaquil/Totodile, Mudkip, Turtwig, Snivy. For X and Y I plan to snag Froakie. Frogs and toads are the greatest.

Also, Charizard is actually the worst of the three starters for Gen 1. Charizard has too many weaknesses and as a whole isn't very powerful. I've never really bothered with Squirtle or Bulbasaur, though, because despite all of Charizard's drawbacks I like having a fire pokemon on my team at all times. Fire types weren't very easy to come across for the entire first 4 gens, either.

Pokemon Yellow version is pretty awesome since you can get all 3 starters.

Yellow is pretty much the only way to go for Gen 1 because it's the only one that's still playable. I tried playing Pokemon Red sometime after Heart Gold and Soul Silver came out and it just wasn't happening. Gen 2 was still perfectly playable though.

For starters it's mostly water types but i'd go for Cyndaquil and Torchic without question, even on Emerald.

Yellow is cool for being able to obtain all the starters but i'm not fond of the fact that much like the anime you can't evolve the Pikachu, I mean if you can beat the champion you can at least choose to evolve the thing.
