Both Manhunt and Manhunt 2 could be considered valid answers. Rockstar has made games with a certain degree of violence, but the case of Manhunt was an extreme one. The protagonist is part of a snuff film, and the violence is much more savage and graphic than in any other game by the company. Manhunt 2 was even more heavily censored.

It's a bit ironic that arguably the most relevant videogame series of all time hasn't won the game of the year award since its creation in 2003, and it's the videogame series that has lost it more times. I'm not quite sure if there's something specific you're after, there's a lot of conventions and ideas that Mario 64 standardised, such as the notion of a camera, controlling player speed via analogue tilt, kicking off the 3D collectathon platformer genre, and showing that open level design could work, thus laying the groundwork that would eventually lead to open world design.

Didn't pretend to be specific since Super Mario 64 standardized many mechanics, but you summed it up pretty well.
