Yellow is cool for being able to obtain all the starters but i'm not fond of the fact that much like the anime you can't evolve the Pikachu, I mean if you can beat the champion you can at least choose to evolve the thing.
Wait really- even with the thunderstone? Huh- that is strange, I didn't know that. I own Yellow, so to think I'd know that, aha. Maybe they tried to add more of the feeling that the show had to the game in a way.

If I recall correctly, that is exactly what Yellow did. The starter Pikachu says "Pika" as in the anime as opposed to his usual cry, I think Jesse and James also feature in the game.
One thing I like about Yellow, and was temporarily brought back in HG/SS, was the idea of having a Pokemon follow you, it's not really anything major, but it was a nice touch.

The purpose of Yellow is to be similar to the anime but all this is was :
- Ash's pikachu (Only not as powerful, as far as i'm aware of it has the normal stats for a Gen 1 Pikachu)
- Jessie and James as Team Rocket Admins (Which i'll be honest I wanted for FR/LG to make up for the lack of admin fights back then)
- All the starters (Which thankfully unlike the pikachu can fully evolve)
- Uh... rivals starter is Eevee
And the rest is just the same gameplay as the previous games (I know there's the Pikachu's beach minigame but that's nothing from the anime if I recall hence why it's not mentioned above).
Can't really complain too much though since Yellow is the best game from Gen 1, not to mention my first Pokemon game.

Ah yes, Jessie and James are indeed in it.
Well then there certainly is no questioning that this game had certainly tried to be a lot like the anime, which I think is pretty cool.
I actually got my copies of Pokemon Blue and Yellow for free, hard for me to decide whether I can pick those versions of Gen 1 over the remade Fire Red and Leaf Green.

At least the Yellow version owns better in-game sprites.

A German copy of Yellow Version was the first Gameboy Color game I'd ever played when it came out. Glorious times.

The older games are hardly better than the new ones. The remakes of the first 2 gens are far superior to their originals since they have the improved gameplay mechanics that where clearly broken in the first games. Only real good that came out the old games was they started the series.

I agree that both LeafGreen and SoulSilver are fantastic remakes.

Seconded, the remakes were wonderfully done and the extra touches, such as when the Legendaries were summoned, were rather cool as well.
I'm curious about the timeline of the series, there are some that say that Gen 1 and Gen 3 occur concurrently, followed by Gen 2 and Gen 4 also concurrently, then Gen 5.

I think it goes Gen 1 -> Gen 2 -> Gen 3 etc.
While that timeline you described makes sense I do believe Steven Stone appeared in HG/SS and called himself the Hoenn champion while at the end of Gen 3 he's no longer champion (I think it would be safe to assume the later titles of a series (E.g. Emerald, Platinum, Crystal) would be the main plot for that gen).

I don't know by heart what I have but I must have approximately a collection of 600 cards.

I have enough to make a playable deck even though it'd mainly consist of grass and water types.
This left me awfully confused now.
