I didn’t know you had a PS3?

If you're after an authentic experience, I'd say PS1 is probably the easiest version to get running if you've got the hardware. (Though bear in mind there's a deluge of version differences between versions so I wouldn't say it's the definitive version, if there was any)

But if you're not too bothered by authenticity (and bear in mind Rayman 1 is *leagues* beyond Rayman 3 when it comes to difficultly), you might want to have a look at Rayman Redemption. It's a fanmade reimagining of the original game with various Quality of Life improvements.

Ohh... will it be able to run on a cheap laptop?

Cheap is a very subjective term, I can't really give a definitive answer on that, but it's free so it can't hurt to try and find out.

Rayman Advance is definitely one of the easiest versions of Rayman 1 around. If you want to get into the original I’d start with that or the DS version and then working up to PS1/Saturn.

I prefer to view Rayman Redemption in a similar way that I view Rayman Revolution, a nice reimagining of their base games. Not totally amazing but still good.

Yeah, but nowhere near the easiest. Looks like dark souls next to the DSi and a Pocket PC versions

I still wonder why the first Rayman game features moths as enemies in Band Land, as I see no obvious connection between them and music.
And we know developers included them very soon as moths were already here during the Hereitscool scenario, when Band Land was the world linked to the computer sound card.

It would be more logical to call them crickets, since these insects are known for the sounds they produce (and, additionally, crickets are often green, I don't think green moths are a real thing).
I mean, there are educational games featuring a friendly moth called Joe the Cricket! In English and French!

My theories are:
1) Devs had poor entomology knowledge, but some realized the mistake after Rayman 1, explaining Joe the Cricket
2) These enemies were always supposed to be crickets, but have been wrongly named moths in Rayman Designer
3) Devs decided to call these sound-related enemies moths because of the AudioMoth device (Google it), which seems to exist before 1995

I’d say theory 1 and 2 are more plausible, as I doubt the Devs would drop a that subtle reference, and nobody would’ve really gotten it

To add to this: they are internally named "Mite" in Rayman 1, so they seemed to have been moths even before they got names in Rayman Designer.

As for the theories, I always thought of them fitting in there because of Band Land also being sky themed, so having an animal that flies around would work there. But if it was already envisioned back for the SNES version then perhaps not.

Well, a reference isn't always meant to be understood by most of people.
That said, I don't know if AudioMoth is a pretty known thing or very specific.

Oh, game files give us the answer? Well, not Designer fault, then.

Ah yes, the sky part, good point.

The pages of the game design bible in L'Histoire de Rayman show some elements and enemies of the SNES version, and moths are among them.
I checked the drawings again, and I saw clouds on one related to the sound card world, meaning the sky thematic was also planned since a long time.

If you don't have the book, be informed moths add a long and thin tail during game development. Maybe an electronic wire, since they were computer-generated enemies.

One day, I thought moths were in Band Land because of the woodwind instruments there. Maybe they used it as houses and food.
Then I remembered moths destroy clothes. Termites live in wood and eat it.

I think it’d only be known with people into that sorta thing, I’d never heard of it until you brought it up

In Disney's Pinocchio, Jiminy Cricket wears a tailcoat, the one typically worn by pianists.

I could've sworn there was a trope in cartoons of grasshoppers being pianists, quite possibly due to their wings' similarity to a tailcoat.

The "loading" art of Band Land has the crickets/moths/grasshoppers/greenbois cheering on Rayman as he plays piano.

I don't know if moths are inspired by Jiminy or this cartoon trope I'm unaware of (not impossible considering the Robot Dinosaur in Rayman 2 seems to be inspired by a bird in very old Looney Tunes cartoons), but then again, it highlights the fact their main name should be crickets.

I've come to think moths may be a reference to an (obscure?) (French?) song or band from the 90s, which can be understand only by people with great music knowledge (which I haven't :?) or Rayman 1 developers.

Like the Red Monsters, other Band Land enemies. We still don't know why they look like this.
Red Monsters who were in the SNES prototype too, did you know? With different head and weapons.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone seen this Japanese advertisement for the PC version of Rayman 1? I was looking through Buyee for any Rayman related stuff and this came up. I feel like this would be worth documenting if anyone hasn't seen it before.

I have to the link to the auction if anyone is wondering.
