Why would anyone use the word ‘arse’ in such a stupid context? ‘HEY BUDDY, I’M GOING TO KICK YOUR ASS’ sounds just as stupid.

‘Arse’ is most effective when used to refer to the buttocks in a not-confrontational and non-offensive context. For example, ‘That girl has a fat arse’. An excellent sentence. It sounds amusing if you think about it for a little while but it does not sound stupid. However, I could not take a person seriously if they said ‘That girl has a fat ass’ or anything similar. ‘Ass’ sounds forced no matter how you say it, unless maybe if you’re American.

I suppose it depends on which you're most accustomed to hearing. Personally, I find 'arse' funnier, but that's probably down to my British heritage. Having said that, I'd find it strange for an American to say "fat arse" in the same way I'd find it strange for a Brit to say "fat ass".

FYI guys, this is a bit of a pointless conversation. But being that we're having it I alternate frequently.
