I love Rayman 1, but I hate Rayman Origins.

I kinda missed out on Origins when it came out. I wanted to try Legends, but people said I should try Origins first. Well, I did. And it convinced me to not even try Legends.
I loved Rayman 1 as a kid. I played the hell out of it, I loved the visuals and the music, the characters, everything. That's why I had to like Rayman Origins. I kept telling myself, "You're a Rayman fan, you should love Rayman Origins."
The truth is, I don't. I hate the stupid controls, I hate the fact that you can only take two hits before you die, I hate the stupid difficulty, and even though I like the art style, I don't think it fits for gameplay. It feels like they took concept art and used it as game visuals. I know it's nonsensical and stupid, but I hate it.
I'm only on world 2 and I've lost count of how many times I died. I spent half an hour on that level with the wind. It's so frustrating how little it takes you to die, and having to keep doing the same part over and over again. At least in Rayman 1 you could get hit three to five times, and it feels like the controls were a lot more precise back then.
I got this game cheaply, but I'm sorry I bought it. I just don't like this direction they're taking Rayman in. It's better than Rabbids, but it's still not the Rayman I used to love. Maybe that Rayman will never come back. Either way, I'm done with both Origins and Legends. It's not for me. And it hurts me to say that.

First off, you really didn't have to make a new topic for this. Second, while I do like Rayman 1 slightly more than Origins saying the difficulty, controls, and gameplay was stupid, well... your opinion is shit. And now we await the inevitable lock.

My tangerines senses were tingling... I now know why.
Rayman Origins? Hard? Hahaha!
The difficulty in Rayman Origins is balanced. It doesn't have the bullshit lives and obsolete counties system Rayman 1 had. Rayman 1 was very flawed in level design but still playable somehow. But Rayman Origins simply is easier to pick and play. Rayman Origins has some great level design but Legends is much better in that department. Also, you have infinite continues which makes up for its "difficulty".
It has perfectly, smooth controls and are easily one of the best in all the video games I played. Rayman 1 had the worst controls in the entire franchise. Seriously, I feel like I'm controlling a damn boulder.
The art style is based entirely on preferences and thus, I can't say anything really. But in my opinion, Rayman Origins is so creativity crazy and such a lighthearted game, it puts me in such a good mood!
You are seriously missing out on two perfectly crafted games.

Honestly, people who say Rayman 1 was harder than Origins are just wrong. I've played Rayman 1 hundreds of times, and it never gets as frustrating as Origins does. I respect other people's opinions, you can think of mine whatever you want, I just had to get this off my chest.

That doesn't make up for anything. It just gets overly repetitive, having to do the same thing over and over again because you can't get past that one spot. And after losing a certain amount of lives the game gives you a message that basically says "You suck at this, wanna quit?". Even with infinite lives, it only adds insult to the injury.
I know I'm probably missing out, but I know when I have to quit playing. Going on will only lead to more frustration, and I pass on that. I just can't appreciate this game.

Like I said, Rayman Origins is definitely way easier and more better designed than Rayman 1. I think everyone here agrees on that, well except for you.

Yup. Origins is indeed way easier than Rayman 1

Well, the majority of people loving Rayman Origins isn't something new to me. Which makes me feel worse about not liking it. It's a shame.

You are not alone. I have never enjoyed Origins, but I absolutely love Rayman 1. I can't quite pinpoint the reasoning behind this, though.

Hmm, wonder if we ought to open an Old vs New thread given these discussions.
Either ways, I won't deny that my preferences lie more toward the old trilogy (and more towards the 3D titles at that anyway), but I'm with the sentiment that R1 is harder than RO. That being said, I feel that if RO used R1's health and life system, it'd be harder. Its more easier difficulty to me, comes from its more forgiving nature when it comes to blunders.
RO did change the playing field somewhat in terms of formula, gameplay and drive, but I do think they're very good titles. Perhaps you might find more enjoyment with Co-op? I tend to prefer playing with relatives and friends meself when it comes to the UbiArt games.

Ray 1 almost made me mad.
Ray Origins is way more easy.
Ray legends is too easy.

Okay, maybe I was a little harsh. It does get better later on. But still, I maintain that Origins is harder than the original Rayman. I'm comparing it to the majority of the original Rayman, not the last few levels (Skops Caves and Candy Chateau) where the difficulty ramps up quickly.
To be honest, I kind of would like a new 3D Rayman as well. Rayman 2 was amazing, but nowadays that game is dated and the camera is clunky. If they revisited that concept I'm sure it could be good. Maybe a Rayman in a sort of Mario 3D World style.

Firstly, there's nothing wrong with making a topic for something like this. Secondly, a little abrasive, don't you think? Why is someone finding one game more difficult than another a "shit opinion"? That literally makes no sense.
JustRob wrote:Maybe a Rayman in a sort of Mario 3D World style.
Oh fuck no.
I also prefer Rayman 1 to Origins. Initially, yes, I found Origins quite difficult simply because I wasn't used to it, but really, Rayman 1 is the harder game. You may not realise this though as you've been playing it your whole life - if you've ever seen someone pick up and play the first Rayman game for the first time, usually, it's quite embarrassing, they can't do anything. They're completely useless, and those are more often than not the people who grew up on more modern games.

Of course Origins does have excellent level design, it's probably one of the most well-designed games in recent memory. What I don't understand is when people refer to Rayman 1's design as "flawed". The people who say this are usually the ones comparing it to Origins, which really is a no-go, they're completely different games with completely different gameplay, there are no similarities, it requires a completely different skillset than Origins. I've cited many reasons as to why Rayman 1 is extremely skill-based, and while not continuing a consistently brilliant level design like Origins, does not by any definition contain "flawed" level design. The people who make that claim are jsually just really bad at the game.

Now this, to set it apart from your previous quote, is actually just a load of nonsense criticism. Rayman is very easy to control in the first game, it's incredibly straightforward. The fact that he moves the way he does was a design choice; why is it a bad thing that when jumping on solid ground you still have full control in-air over your direction? The game is not based on speed, no, it's based on precision, and for a game based on this kind of precision, there really is not much to improve in regards to the mechanics.

There are great topics to talk about that. Debates about new 3D Rayman games have been on the table for years already. Go to the related topics and don't be shy to share your opinion on the subject

(I don't remember exactly where it is, but it's surely in the Rayman section of the English forum).
About the difficulty...well, I'm kinda like many other people who played Rayman: R1 is so hard for me that I haven't finished it yet. RO is not THAT hard, but it's not easy either, as the way to handle a few parts in the game is rather tricky (looking at you Mystical Pique). Once you got a grasp on it, you just go into The Land Of The Livid Dead level and you find yourself trying hard once again.
About playing RO before RL, I don't really know...there isn't a real order between the two (like "RO is before RL, RL is the sequel"). Although the spirit of RO is clearly the same as RL's, a few changes make the difference quite noticeable. I like to think that RL is an "enhanced version" of RO, as Ubisoft seemed to focus onto a few big flaws Origins had, while giving it its own little personal twist: graphics are better, levels are designed in a better way, and the rythm aspect of the game is perfect. The difficulty, however, doesn't reach the same height: absolutely no level in RL can be compared to RO's TLOTLD in that case (but reaching diamond in online challenges is actually much harder...).

Okay, you're right about that, Ad. It's just my personal criticism, I really don't like the controls of Rayman 1. They're just SO stiff.
And the design of Rayman 1's levels are just so labyrinth-like, making them hard to traverse for new-comers.
Just my two cents.

I actually think that Legends has worse level design than Origins overall. Whereas Origins' levels were so meticulously tailored to the game's mechanics, Legends seems to have been designed moreso around general, theoretical concepts in which they just stuck Rayman in there. This isn't always the case, but there there are significant portions of the game where it is.
Bradandez wrote:And the design of Rayman 1's levels are just so labyrinth-like, making them hard to traverse for new-comers.
Aye, the labrynth-like design is actually something I like a lot, I always found it to be a lot more fulfilling, venturing through all these different pathways, it felt like I had really "conquered" an area when I'd found all the cages and tings and then finally made it to the end. Rayman 2 is very similar in that respect. It's a linear progression, but for the most part, there's a lot of room to move and explore, and every physical area has at least a couple other things in it you can find by just exploring the environment - the same can be said for Rayman 1. Ifor there is something I want to criticise Origins on gameplay-wise where a comparison to the first game is warranted (I have next to no criticisms towards Origins' gameplay), it's that the cage locations, unlike the first game, weren't remotely inventive. They all could be found the exact same way in every level.

The cages weren't difficult finding, but I did like how they incorporated a different challenge in order to break the cage.
Legends' levels are something I fucking love. Every level seems to have a progressive tone to it, much like Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze. I never found two levels to be alike and always had fun when they introduced a new gimmick.

He said he hates the "stupid" difficulty, when I found it to not be stupid. Maybe saying "shit" was a little too much. But calling the difficulty stupid is honestly a joke.

I don't see why this needed a whole new topic on it's own, it could have just been posted in the Origins topic. I'm sure I was overly harsh though so I apologise.

I was actually able to find all the cages very easily in my first playthrough; that was one of the easier things for me, damage due to crap reflexes is what usually got me. Then again, I was playing the PlayStation version, so I suppose that made things a bit easier.
My main thing to criticize in R1 are the physics. Momentum is stupidly unpredictable, and most of my deaths in the game usually stem from it in some way or another. It's very frequent that you seem to speed up instantly with basically no visible acceleration, which often causes you to slide into pits and get what feels like a pretty cheap death. I'd say the physics are relatively consistent in reality, but it doesn't feel that way, and the issues most likely stem from them being inherently poor.

I Totally agree. Rayman 1,2 and 3 are the only good rayman games out there. (if you dont count rayman M/Arena) Origins, rabbids, etc SUCK BIGTIME. all of you who talk crap about rayman and/or its level design/difficulty/whatever can go suck a fat one.
