Well, it is still my opinion that mutually assured destruction saved a lot more lives than nuclear weapons have cost us, and ever will, but I can't deny the risk and the angst it can cause.

I guess MAD works "fine" when all the actors are rational, but can we really be sure that the people who matter in the nuclear-armed states (including those who weren't supposed to have them in the first place) are rational, and always will be?

Plus it pains me, as an engineer who has worked so hard on solving problems in devices, with the ultimate aim of making sure safety-critical systems in cars don't fail, that there are engineers out there like me, but who work on making sure their devices can cause as much destruction as possible…

Probably not! But I'm not sure there's much we can do about it, since no treaties will ever prevent such a rogue actor from arming themselves with a nuclear arsenal if they really want to. :confus:

Has anyone watched HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us? Any thoughts about it?

I've watched the first two episodes and I've been enjoying it so far. I was happily surprised to see how close to the games the show is. It makes sense given how cinematographic the games were, so I look forward to seeing the rest.

I just cringed hard when the lighter failed to ignite the gasoline vapors.

I was quite surprised, I expected a much worse result. Despite the few variations, they have managed to keep the essence of the original game. Perhaps it lacks a little more action, but I guess it is quite difficult to capture everything in so few chapters.

I watched the third one tonight and it was pretty slow indeed, especially when it's basically an hour of character development for two people who are already dead now. Let's hope there will be more action after that. :)

I found the fourth episode much better. It has some more straight up action and the preview of the fifth episode with Henry and Sam looks really good. I don't want to say that the third one is a bad episode (in fact, I think it is a very well told story even though they die)... But I think it could have been funnier if they had depicted Ellie and Bill taunting each other, just like it happened in the game.

I know, it's awful :( There's devastation in Syria too, as if the civil war wasn't enough…

It's simply terrifying. At least Turkey can get some international help and will get through it sooner or later... Not the same in Syria. It's just really sad to see how a war can summon an entire country into the misery. The video showing the little girls claiming for help and offering themselves to be their rescuer's slaves is devastating. Syria must be the closest thing to hell on Earth.
