Rayman Pirate-Community

As the title reads, I have some suggestions for fixing and cleaning up the categories on the wiki. From my understanding they used to be fairly organized, but as time has moved on and different people have worked on the wiki, the consistency has been lost. So I have some suggestions for cleaning it up:

1. Only use sub-category for articles
Most categories are grouped with sub-categories. A simple example is the games one which only contains sub-categories. For an article which is a 2D sidescroller we don't use the "games", "platform games" and "2D platform games" categories. Instead we limit it to the category farthest down in the tree which is "2D platform games". This system is nice as it keeps everything organized with the usage of as few categories as possible. The problem is that there are a lot of articles not using this system and containing categories from the same category tree. A great example is the Scrapped content category.

2. Remove unnecessary categories
Some categories seem to serve no purpose or are confusing since they are too similar to others. Here are the ones I could find:

• Platform games - Only contains two sub-categories (2D and 3D platform games) which could just as well be in the top category, "games".
• Designer games - This one doesn't really make much sense to me. It seems to include game-packs which include the game "Rayman Designer". Why is this a category?
• Downloadable games - I can see why this used to be there, but nowadays pretty much every Rayman title is downloadable somewhere (Steam, PSN, Xbox, mobile, Virtual Console etc.) which makes this seem rather pointless
• Gameloft games - Like with the Designer one this seems pointless. Why have a category for games developed/published by one specific company?
• Handheld games - Like the downloadable one applies to almost all games in the series.
• Multiplayer games - Doesn't make much sense since it includes games like Rayman 2 only due to its minigames.
• Nightmares of Polokus - This one is really confusing. From what I understand, all enemies in the Rayman universe are nightmares of Polokus (I mean, the story goes that everything in the world comes from his dreams), so wouldn't this simply include all enemies??
• Rayman Legends Challenges - Pointless.
• Rayman games - Pointless as well. Why is there a category for this? All Rayman games should be categorized in the "games" sub-categories depending on genre etc.´
• Villains - Doesn't make much sense. What's the difference between villain and enemy? It seems to only include each game's main antagonist, but that's not always so clear which makes it rather confusing.

3. Change some categories

• Internet games - The name seems odd to me. I first thought it meant online games. Shouldn't it be something like "Browser games" or "Flash games"?
• Lists - Is missing a lot of list articles + it seems pointless. Most list articles already have fitting categories. Although this one could be a category containing sub-categories which would make more sense.
• Non-Rayman games - Should be "Non-Rayman or Rabbid games" since the wiki covers all Rabbid games as well.
• Other - Contains articles which should have more specific categories
• Other software - Slightly confusing again. What exactly should this include? Should the Legends Beatbox be there?
• Remakes - Remakes is such a loose term, especially in the Rayman series. Why not call it "Remakes and ports" and include all ports as well?
• Trophies of {game} - Shouldn't it be "Trophies and Achievements from {game}"
• Soundtracks‏‎ - We shouldn't have both this and the "music" one since they are too similar.
• Places/Images/Artwork etc from {game} - Some of these include other games which should have their own set of categories. A great example is all of the Rayman 1 categories which include all Designer content as well.
• Solutions of Rayman 3 - Shouldn't the name be "Solutions to Rayman 3" or "Solutions to the levels of Rayman 3"?

4. Categories which are missing articles

• Logos
• Maps
• Disambiguation
• Items from Rayman Fiesta Run

5. Categories which should exist

• Icons - The Box art category has too many icons, so they should be separated more.

So, these are my suggestions for the category system. I wanted to make this thread and hear others opinions before doing any changes since these are quite a lot of changes I've been thinking about.

Maybe adding categories based on which engine the game was made in would be a good idea?

Rayman 1/Designer/etc...'s engine was named "Rayman 2D Platform", Rayman 2/3/M and Tonic Trouble's engine was named "OpenSpace", the Rabbids games used the Jade engine and the modern 2D games all use UbiArt, so each style of game fits nicely into the different engines.

Not every enemy is a Nightmare. The Pirates came from outside the world.

Hm, maybe. The only issue is that those engine names aren't mentioned anywhere else on the wiki. Perhaps we should actually have separate pages for the different engines which have been used in Rayman games? Engines like the UbiArt one have quite a lot of info which could be written about it.

Right. But that still leaves this category to include all non-robot enemies pretty much. Still seems rather pointless to me.

And then about my suggestion. How do you all feel about going through with the changes I listed in the first post? In one way or another we should clean up the categories since they are currently very inconsistent. Any thoughts?

Sorry for the late reply, but you raised a lot of points and I've been way to busy to address them all so far.

• Downloadable games: I guess you're right, though how many games are not downloadable as of now?

• Handheld games: maybe some figures could help here as well
• Multiplayer games: maybe we should stick to primarily multiplayer games? The idea might apply to downloable and handheld games too.
• Nightmares of Polokus: PluM is right
• Rayman Legends Challenges: quite restrictive indeed
• Rayman games: between the Rabbids games and the few others (Tonic Trouble, Academy of Champions), I think we should keep it
• Villains: I believe the term specifically refers to main antagonists so it's quite self-descriptive to me
• Internet games: browser games is a better name indeed. Or Flash games if they're all Flash, of course, but I'm not sure about that.
• Lists: probably not very useful
• Non-Rayman games: maybe we could have Rayman games, Rabbids games and Other games?
• Other: can all of these articles reasonably be categorized? If not, I guess it won't hurt much to keep it
• Other software: I guess it could use a better name, not I have an idea for now.

• Places/Images/Artwork etc from {game}: maybe we can start by listing the games that deserve their own categories but don't have one? The problem is that in some cases it might not be clear which category a file belongs to.

The games that are not downloadable are: the educational games, Rayman M and Rush, Rayman 2 GBC, RHR and RRR GBA and all DS games. Some games are also only downloadable in certain regions, such as Arena, Rayman 3D etc.
Games which are not on handheld are the educational games, Rayman M/Arena/Rush, Rayman 3 and most Rabbids games.

As for sticking to the games which are primarily in these categories, I think that would be a good solution. Then downloadable games can only include games like the mobile games, Rayman 3 HD and Rayman DSi-Ware. Handheld games can include all Nintendo handheld games except Rayman Advance, Rayman DS, Rayman DSi-Ware, Rayman 3D and Rayman Origins since these are all ports from console games. Multiplayer games can be limited to Arena/M/Rush, Origins, Legends and the Rabbids games.

I'm pretty sure all games are flash. Legends Beatbox is the newest one and that runs through Flash. But I think "Browser games" is good enough. Future browser games might run on HTML5 instead.

I think we have categories for Rabbid games already. Not too sure about other games, but perhaps we should have on called "Other games" or "Non-Rayman or Rabbid games"?

I think we should keep it since it's a good one to have. But I also think there are some articles there which could be in more specific categories. I'll look through more closely later.

Not really, but they have so few articles in each (1 and 2) and are very similar.

Regarding the artwork articles I'd say that is true. It's hard to tell if a Rayman 1 artwork is from Rayman 1 or one of its spin-offs. Or if a Rayman Fiesta Run artwork is from Fiesta Run or Legends. But at least the "Images" categories should be kept separate. For example:
- Images from Rayman Designer
- Images from Rayman by His Fans
- Images from Rayman 60 Levels
- Images from English with Rayman
- Images from Rayman Jungle Run
- Images from Rayman Fiesta Run
There are probably a few more as well. As for the "places", it's mostly the same.

Just an update regarding categories:
I've now today been adding categories to hundreds of pictures without categories. Hopefully things will start being more organized regarding categories now...

So, rather than downloadable games, we should have a category for exclusively digitally distributed games. The same goes for handheld-only and primarily multiplayer games.

A category for non-Rayman or Rabbids games is needed as well.

As for soundtracks‏‎ and music, I suppose music is more general, but there's only one soundtrack anyway.

I also agree about the 'Images from' categories.
