I believe the game Cuphead, which is a 2D side-scrolling game that is heavily inspired by the 90s cartoons, is the spiritual sequel to Rayman (1). It has the same wacky nature of Rayman (1) (may be even wackier), the same hard bosses, same worlds (candy world, forest world etc) and the character even shoots beams from his hands. If you liked Rayman (1), I definetely recommend that you play Cuphead.
I just hope we get to see a spirital successor to Rayman 3. Yooka-Lele is not it...

I found Cuphead easier than Rayman 1, I can see your connections between both games, but I personally don't see it.
Apart from that, I loved Cuphead.

Interesting way of looking at cuphead, but I'll have to disagree.
Cuphead is an homage to classical cartoons, back when animation studios just left the cradle. You can clearly see they were going for the classical Disney vibe. I'm sure that the similarities you can draw between Rayman 1 and Cuphead, actually stem from this animation style and that they're not actually linked.
I also have to agree that Rayman 1 is definitely a harder game than Cuphead, though I must add that it's not the Dark Souls of platformers.
