Discussing the Climate Change

Lately our world is bad, that is, temperatures are rising because of polluting gases. So, the glaciers are melting, causing the sea level to rise. That's why I had to talk about this topic because lately the channels are putting a lot of news on that.

How about the deforestation? It would be advisable to install or use Ecosia because this browser actually plants a tree in each search.

And the plastics? It is important to follow all three Rs: recycle, reuse and reduce.

Well, I'm very distrustful of the mainstream media and this is a very complicated topic, however this video boils down my general views on this subject (I lean towards Joe Rogan's perspective):

Yeah. The day before yesterday, a Spanish channel called Telecinco put a news about this that has overwhelmed me a lot that I had to change the TV channel in order to calm down my emotions.

Regarding the media coverage, a healthy amout of scepticism would be advisable, since there is a tendency in the mainstream media to present reality in a way that would improve the ratings (among other factors).

Unfortunately I can't say anything else about this, the last time I tried to talk about a complex issue in a forum (without being properly informed), I got piled on by angry libs.

In light of the recent IPCC report, I'll just leave this here:

(Not attached, but I can come back and fix it later – plus, xkcd probably ain't going anywhere…)

When you live in Ireland, the weather is very much like a random number generator.

But someone's been tinkering with the seeds lately!

High variance, but rising mean nonetheless.

The only thing I keep hearing is: "it is going to be bad, but we don't know how much".

It's already pretty bad…

And yet, shitloads of people still favor coal over nuclear. :fou2:

The best statistic is that coal plants emit more radioactive material into the air than nuclear as part of normal operation :hap:

If only their fear was rational!

I am aware about it, thus I voted yes, but I don't think anything alarming is happening though.

To me the climate change sounds like a completely natural cycle.

Ah, yes. There is a guy going under the nickname of DrBuzz0, who was running his Depleted Cranium blog, in which he was educating people about all the mis-information and fear-mongering that has to do with nuclear energy, and how safe, well-engineered nuclear energy is basically the only energy that is both clean and sustainable. Unfortunately, it seems his site was hacked and overrun with crap and garbage, and most of the content is a mess and not really accessible. Some of it may still be available through the Wayback Machine.

"Depleted Cranium"! That made me smile! I see what you mean about the messy state of the site though… :?

Also, to put the comic I posted before in a wider context, here's another one: https://xkcd.com/1732/ (I'd love to post the image here, but it would really be too big for a post!) The whole thing is rather entertaining, but anyone in a rush can scroll through it quickly to get the basic message!

Indeed, the scientific consensus is that while there are natural cycles involved, such as the Little Ice Age ending a little over 150 years ago, the sheer scale of recent warming leaves no doubt as to its human-induced nature.

Another interesting graphic that shows Earth's average surface temperature over the past 500 million years.

Have any of you been hearing the recent widespread propaganda about EVs being more environmentally harmful than motor vehicles? It's absolutely infested YouTube/Reddit/Twitter conversations, and so have these Anti-Tesla movements, to the point where I even hear people IRL bringing up these points:

- "Battery production is more harmful than producing an internal combustion engine"
- "In the event of a battery fire they burn incredibly toxic materials for days on end"
- "Recharging your car still relies on electricity production, like from coal sources"

These things are all true, but:

- Battery production is like 1.6x as impactful as internal combustion engine production, and is a drop in the ocean compared to the THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of litres of burned oil shooting out your tailpipe over a car's lifetime.
- There have been a total of like 150 Tesla battery fires in the last 10 years, vs the hundreds of thousands annually from motor vehicles in the USA.
- 60% of US energy relies on fossil fuels yes, but only 20% is coal. In Canada, 80% of our energy is renewable hydro, only 6% is coal.

I'm mostly just tossing this out here for anyone who's actually falling for this anti-EV garbage that's been flooding the world lately.
