Heirs to the Throne
Prologue
A book opened. A spell was read. A thousand years passed. A creature was kept alive by mutating red lums for extra years. And now, the spell was nearly complete. Thirteen was the number. She was in danger. Rayman was in danger. She had to warn him.
Alaesia's eyes opened. The sun was rising and rain fell, tapping against the windows. Thunder boomed softly in the distance. Next to her, Dorithmir slept peacefully. His dark hair scattered over his pale face.
She got out of bed and put on a pair of jeans. Dorithmir stirred.
He rolled over. "What are you doing up?" he asked sleepily.
"I had a vision last night." Alaesia took the Snake Cross Amulet out of the dresser drawer. The two glowing, blue snakes bound together by a ring around them, glowed brightly, sensing danger. She put the necklace around her neck and added, "I have to go back to Rayman's world and warn him."
Dorithmir sat up. "You want me to go with you?"
Alaesia sat back down on the bed and kissed him. "I'll be back before you know it."
"I've heard that before."
Alaesia smiled and kissed him again. "I'm just giving Rayman a warning. I'll be back before you wake up."
She stood back up and Dorithmir laid back down. Alaesia left the cottage and walked along the beach in the rain. She did not have the energy to create a portal at the moment. She was still drowsy from just waking up. She would have to call Fhuyt.
Fhuyt. She reached out telepathically. The world's in danger. I have to give Rayman a warning.
Done. Fhuyt said and she was instantly teleported.
That was what she loved about Fhuyt. For one, he was wake when no one else was. For two, instead of wasting time with questions, he trusted her enough that she only had to say the world was in danger.
But now she had to focus. She had helped Rayman and Ly build their cottage, so she knew where it was. The only problem was she had to walk a while before she got there.
A blindfold went over Alaesia's eyes. Her first instinct was to shoot out at the unseen enemy with her soul powers, but they didn't work.
That shocked her long enough for the enemy to grab her hands and tie them behind her back. She tried to burst into flaes and burn off the blindfold and the ropes, but none of her magic worked. It was as if the blindfold numbed her magic. The enemy picked her up and carried her off.
A large, green fly saw her being carried off. He flew away to find Rayman and warn him.
Chapter 1
The three children walked up the small hill that led from the cottage their parents had built before they were born to the lake at the bottom.
Yehaiel, born only a few seconds before his twin sister, had blonde hair like his father's. It stuck out a little but nowhere near as much. A fishing pole rested on his shoulder and he carried a tackle box in his hand that bumped into his leg as he walked. A yellow tail similar to his mother's flicked with some irritation.
Ameaj walked next to him. A hand that was not attached to an arm carried an empty bucket. She had a large nose like her father's but her mother's long, purple hair.
A smaller child chased dragonflies up the hill. He was the splitting image of his uncle at his age, with dark hair. He too, was limbless, but had a dark tail like his brother's. He disappeared into a patch of tall grass.
"Jimmy, don't get lost!" Ameaj called after him.
He came back out of the grass and continued up the hill with his siblings.
Finally, the cottage came into view. Two stories rose off the ground made of wood, stones, and other random objects that their parents and their friends had gathered.
They went up the three porch steps and opened the door.
"Didn't catch anything!" Yehaiel called as he set his pole and box by the door. Ameaj set the bucket down on her way in. Wanting to be like his older siblings, Jimmy picked a few blades of grass and set them on the floor as he came in.
Before they were able to close the front door, however, a large, green fly shoved his way in the house.
"Coming through! Watch out!" Murfy said as he searched for Rayman.
Rayman emerged from another room. "What's going on?"
"Rayman, we've got trouble. Alaesia's been captured."
Ly came out of the same room. "Why? Who's taken her?"
"Don't know. But if she's in trouble, so is the world. All I know is that the person who took her went north." Murfy said.
"I'll find her." Yehaiel said, a gleam of hope and excitement in his eyes.
"Me too." Ameaj said. She wanted to save the world as bad as her brother did, a trait they had inherited from Rayman.
"No. Your mom and I will go. We'll be back soon." Rayman said. "Murfy, go find out all you can and get Neshae over here so he can watch the kids."
Murfy nodded and flew out the door.
"We can help." Yehaiel said. "Just give us a chance."
There was a look in Rayman's eyes as if he was considering the idea. After all, he had only been around Yehaiel's age when he had first saved the world. "No. You may get your chance some day, but for now, I need you two to help Uncle Neshae watch Jimmy."
Rage burned in Yehaiel's eyes as he turned and went back outside. His temper was short and he needed to get away from everyone and cool off.
"Yehaiel!" Ameaj ran out after her twin. Jimmy followed.
As they reached the bottom of the hill, they sat on a rock on the edge of the lake. Insects buzzed around the aquatic plants that stuck out of the water. The last few rays of the sun cut through the twilight and illuminated the hill. Fish jumped out of the water to catch the insects. And for a moment, all was peaceful. Neither of the children spoke as they gazed into the lake's surface.
"I'm going to follow them." Yehaiel finally broke the silence. "I'm going to go north and find Alaesia. That will prove to them that I can handle saving the world just as well as Dad."
"No you won't." A shadow passed over those final rays of the sun. A dark figure landed at the base of the hill behind them. He was limbless like Rayman, but his hair was dark and sort of stuck out and hung down. His eyes were green and his shirt was black with a red circle with a red dot in the middle, making a bull's eye. Black biking gloves covered his hands and large, bat wings were spread as he landed, but folded themselves over him like a cape.
"Uncle Neshae!" Jimmy jumped up and ran to the vampire. Neshae picked him up and hugged him.
"How's my little man?" He asked and put the boy down.
"Hey." Yehaiel and Ameaj greeted their uncle.
"Why such long faces?" Neshae asked them. "I haven't seen such depression since I was bitten."
"Mom and Dad won't let us come and rescue Alaesia." Ameaj filled him in.
"Well, maybe they've got it covered." Neshae said. "Don't worry, we'll have a great time."
Yehaiel smiled and looked out at the lake again. I will be having a blast. He thought. Proving everyone wrong.
"And don't even think about running off, Yehaiel." Neshae siad. "You'll get the chance to save the world one day. It's in your blood. You three are heirs to the throne of heroes. You come from a long line of them."
"I don't want to wait for some day. I want to save the world now while I've got the chance." Yehaiel said.
"You know what?" Neshae said. "I'll bet that a troll came out of the shadows and dragged off Alaesia to be its bride. The world is probably in no danger whatsoever."
"Alaesia's gonna marry a troll?" Jimmy exclaimed in shock.
"No, because your mom and dad are gonna save her. Your parents could take on a hundred trolls without breaking a sweat."
"Is Ameaj gonna marry a troll?" Jimmy asked.
"I hope not." Ameaj said.
"Of course not. Not while your Uncle Neshae is here to keep you three safe." Neshae said.
Yehaiel began skipping rocks on the surface of the lake.
"If it makes you feel better," Neshae told him, "when your parents get back, I could take you out into the wilderness and teach you everything I know about fighting and world saving. Provided your parents agree, of course. Sound good?"
Yehaiel shrugged.
"Sounds good." Ameaj answered for him.
For the next half hour, they all had a rock skipping contest. Neshae got first place, having vampire strength and being able to throw rocks farther. Yehaiel was next, and then Ameaj. Jimmy didn't know how to skip rocks yet so he just threw the rocks into the lake. Then they all climbed up the hill to the cottage.
When they went inside, the place was a disaster. The fire in the fireplace was out. Chairs were knocked over. There were holes in the walls as if there had been a fight. There were burn spots as if fire had been thrown. The most important thing was that Rayman and Ly were gone.
"Oh my Polokus!" Ameaj said.
They looked through the other rooms. Not all were in as bad shape as the first one, but Rayman and Ly were nowhere to be found.
"Still think the world's not in danger?" Yehaiel asked Neshae.
"Where's Mommy and Daddy?" Jimmy asked.
"I don't know." Neshae said. "But we can't stay here. The other rooms were a little torn up as well. They were looking for more than just Rayman and Ly. And they might come back here to look some more."
"Maybe they went looking for Alaesia already and the bad guys came here to look for them." Ameaj suggested.
"No." Yehaiel told her. "There are signs of a fight. Whoever it was got Mom and Dad before they left."
"I want Mommy." Jimmy said. To comfort him, Ameaj picked him up.
"Don't worry." Yehaiel said. "We're going to find them."
"Yehaiel..." Ameaj started.
"Don't you see, the world is in danger and the two people most qualified for the position of saving it have been captured. I think it's time we prove to Mom and Dad that we're not kids anymore by rescuing them." Yehaiel argued.
"He's right." Neshae said. "This can't be coincidence. Something is going on and we can't stay here anyway. Those guys could come back for us as well. We gotta go now."
A light shone from the doorway as a yellow lum flew in. The little ball of light circled around the room and went back outside.
Yehaiel followed it, wondering why there was a yellow lum around here. It was supposed to be inside the Heart of the World.
"It's leading us somewhere." Ameaj put Jimmy down and followd Yehaiel. Jimmy and Neshae followed close behind.
Soon eough, they found another yellow lum and the first one disappeared, going back to the Heart.
"You think Mom left a trail of lums for us to follow?" Ameaj asked.
"Your Mom's smart. I'd bet almost anything that's exactly what it is." Neshae said.
"Then lets follow it." Yehaiel said.
Chapter 2
They followed the yellow lums northward long into the night. Each one would disappear and return to the Heart of the World when the next was found.
"Yehaiel, stop." Ameaj said. "It's late. We have to stop and get some sleep."
Yehaiel stopped and turned around. Ameaj leaned against the trunk of a giant tree. Neshae stood next to her, carrying a sleeping Jimmy. Yehaiel realized that he was tired as well.
"Okay." he said and sat on the ground. "We'll sleep. I'll take the first watch."
Ameaj laid down on the ground and was asleep in an instant. Neshae put down Jimmy right next to her.
"You know, if you're tired I can take the first watch." he said.
Yehaiel shook his head.
"I really can." the vampire insisted.
"I don't want to be woken up." Yehaiel said. "I'd rather take the first watch and get it over with."
Neshae shrugged. "Okay." He leaned up against a large tree root and closed his eyes. Though Yehaiel knew he wasn't really asleep. He was fully awake. Night was his time. And Yehaiel was glad for that. If he started to nod off Neshae would know and take the next watch.
And it wasn't very long before exactly that happened.
Yehaiel opened his eyes just as a piece of black cloth was about to go over them.
He sat up and startled the strange creature holding the blindfold. It was a little bigger than a teensie and had a nose almost like one, but not as long. It was covered in a thin layer of brown fur and had ears with several points up their length instead of one point like a fairy's. It eyes seemed completely black, but Yehaiel could make out splotches of blue, green, purple, and red scattered across them. Two clawed hands held the blindfold.
"What the..." Yehaiel started.
The creature gave a yelp and ran off.
"Damn!" Yehaiel stood up. "Wake up everyone!" he shouted and took off after the creature.
He barely kept up with the creature as it disappeared behind one tree after another. It was fast. The forst suddenly ended and so did the ground.
Yehaiel's heart leapt as he skidded to a stop and fell over the edge. He grabbed a tree root sticking out of the dirt. Rocks and dust were flung into the air and crashed to the bottom below. It was a long way down.
"Yehaiel!" Ameaj screamed and ran to the edge. When she saw he hadn't fallen she held out a hand to help him up.
Slowly, he began to ascend. Then with a sudden jerk, he was up. Ameaj had been helped by Neshae. But then Yehaiel was nearly flattened by his little brother as he "leapt to the rescue."
"I'll save you, Yeail!" the boy cried. When he settled down he added, "Are you okay?"
"I don't know." Yehaiel said. "I think you have crushed my organs."
There was a look of terror on Jimmy's face. Ameaj glared at her twin and picked Jimmy up and off of Yehaiel.
"He's just teasing, Jimmy." she said.
"Come on." Yehaiel said when he got to his feet. "It's getting away."
"Where are you going?" Ameaj asked.
"If we follow that creature it might lead us to Mom and Dad."
"We didn't even see where it went. And we have a trail of lums that Mom left for us to follow." Ameaj argued.
"Okay then we can split up. You and Jimmy follow the lums and--"
"We are not splitting up." Neshae said. "For all we know that thing could be leading us into a trap. It did a pretty good jub of leading you off a cliff. We'll continue to follow the lums."
It was a long morning. They continued to follow the lums. Dark clouds hung in the sky, sending the warning of a storm. A rough, chilly wind blew, cooling off the air temperature considerably.
"YYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!" came a sudden scream from the trees.
The creature Yehaiel had seen before pounced on Neshae and tied the blindfold on him.
Yehaiel formed a fire ball in his hand and threw it at the creature, surprised at what he had done. He had never tried to use magic before.
The creature was hit in the face. It jumped off of Neshae and rubbed its eyes.
Yehaiel called vines from around the trees to wrap themselves around the creature. Neshae riped the blindfold off his head. THe vines tied the struggling creature to the tree they were from. Neshae's fangs appeared.
"Don't hurt me! I can tell you where they are!" it said.
