How to include Rayman 1 images to RayWiki

Good evening all ^^

As you know, adding pictures to RayWiki is extremely important, as there's no better description than an image; and after all, a video game is made of images ^^ So, the best we can do is to use the best quality pictures available, and there's a tip for Rayman 1 screenshots that every valued contributor should know about.

Now, let's take a look at this picture:
Image

Okay, it's nothing but Moskito from the PS1 version. But let's take a closer look now.
Image

If you have any computer notions, you've already noticed that the picture is actually made of small squares which are not just pixels, but actually 2×2 pixel-large squares. Most of you already knew it, but I just wanted to emphasize that.

The problem is that Rayman 1 is a 2D-game, with neat sprites. We just can't put 632 pixel-wide (636 for the PS screenshots, as there's no black strip on the left) in the wiki pages, and unfortunately, resizing them with an internet browser results in a quality loss. Why? Simply because there are several resizing algorithms, and all modern browsers use advanced techniques (such as bicubic, bilinear, best quality, etc.) that don't fit neat sprites. So, you got it, if browsers don't do it, we'll have to take care of that ourselves!

And it's no big deal. All graphics programs allow nearest neighbour resampling (which will permit a 50% resizing of the picture without any quality loss), even MS Paint (you'll have to use another program to save the picture as a PNG though, or Paint will just screw it hardcore). And then, our screenshots will be 316 pixel-wide (318 on the PS), which is a perfect size to illustrate our articles Image

In conclusion, here's an example to show you the difference.

Not to mention the disk space and bandwidth saving: our server isn't free

Thank you for reading, and see you on RayWiki!

Ah, that was because I have all of my emulators at double size [something I prefer over normal size when I play any game on an emu]. I see the difference now and I'll keep that in mind. Cheers.

What emulators do you use? Because I'd like to be able to play the PS version of Rayman 1, and also, even if I can play the PC version on my computer, it took me ages to find a program that allowed me to take decent screenshots of it and my trial version has expired now, plus it's also very hard to be accurate with it.

I use ePSXe for playing PS1 games, which I set to double size [normally it's 320x240but I find that too small for me to see], and then I cut off the borders in Paint. You won't be able to get the music working for some reason, but the sound effects work; you might also need BIOS and stuff but I can provide that.

Fine, I'll download it quickly. Do you have the PC version as well? Also, I can run the Jaguar version with Project Tempest, but it keeps freezing and I can't get past Bzzit. Has anyone found a way to fix that problem? :?

Got the PC version too with Pok2's patch.

It saddens me that no-one has been arsed to update any of those Jaguar emulators. The only things that do get updated are MESS emulators that play anything but even then they play Jaguar games like shit. :(

Someone needs to make a brand new one that actually works perfectly.

I tried using a Jaguar BIOS, but it asked me weird things such as download address and start address... There's nothing I can do I'm afraid. By the way, I've set up ePSXe (damn, it's a pain with BIOS, plugins, etc.) but I can't find the Rayman 1 rom: any idea where I can get it?

That's why I'll never buy a Mac. It's always impossible to find decent programs

Well I find the operating system way more stable than Windows. But I really don't play many games on computer anyways.

That'd be the only reason I wouldn't want to use a Mac.

Anyway MESS sucks at Jaguar emulating whether or not you have the BIOS. If I had the know how I'd create one myself but eh, I don't.

I just use my game disc to play the game, though ISOs might be found in torrents.

Thank you ^^ Well, I haven't found anything on the internet, so I guess I'll buy the PS game.

Sucks that Underground-gamer is full. :( But whether you want to use an ISO or the game disc, here's how I set my emu up:

Plugin for the graphics is the one called Soft Driver, then go to configure that plugin and click on the button at the bottom that says "nice", that should make it run at the most correct speed; all else that needs to be changed is to change to windowed mode and set the res to 320x240.

My download is a bit slow anyway seeing as there's only one seeder.

Does anybody know how to rip perfect-quality backgrounds from R1 PS1? I...need....to...have...them... :paranormal:

I use an emulator and save the files as PNGs. There's no quality loss at all.

But I don't want screenshots; I want to find out how to rip the isolated backgrounds themselves. Drolpiraat can rip them, but there's a quality loss. :(

Most emulators can rip backgrounds actually.

But sadly, drolpiraat seems to have gone to bed...
