Configuring Controls in Rayman 2 for PC

So I managed to get Rayman 2 up and running on my WinXP system. When I installed it, I made a profile for the game in my Nvidia control panel so it uses anti-aliasing, anistropic filtering and vsync; just to make things look nicer. The game looks and sounds so much better than its console cousin. I originally played Rayman 2 on my old N64 (and I remember leaving the console on for 3 days straight because I couldn't save) so the differences are very pleasing for me.
Anyway, I have a small issue though. The default key bindings are HORRIBLY laid out. I'm a classic PC shooter guy, so I'm stuck on WASD keys for movement. Arrow keys are just a no-no for me. The fire key is space (which I'd much rather have as jump, who's key is either A or Z), and the camera controls are also pretty sloppy. I scrounged around in the game files and couldn't find any .cfg files other than one, but it has jibberish inside it that makes no sense at all. I tried configuring the keys in the in-game options but they have some REALLY weird thing I can't make sense of. Some calibration thingy.
If I can't change the keys, would hooking an old n64 controller up to my PC work? I have a USB pickup for one (I use it for my emulators) and (amazingly) a working, gray N64 controller. It's...uh...missing the joystick, but I can use the D-Pad.

One day I tried to play with a gamepad on Rayman 2 for PC and it seems it's impossible to change them.

Same here - I played Rayman 2 PC with a gamepad controller but it wouldn't let me change the controls.

Not. Cool.
I guess I'll have to endure the sloppy keyboard settings.

That's right, end of the subject.

There is software for Windows for wrapping gamepad buttons to keys, so that you can use gamepads in some games that don't support it or don't support yours in particular. Maybe you can make it work for key to key wrapping to. An example of software that can do this " wrapping " is
JoyToKey. Good luck

If you really hate initial configuration, consider using Wiimote and GlovePIE. But, you know, it's really good. If you like to move with left hand, try using numpad (1's shoot, 8's jump, 9's diving).

Why don't you just get a game pad?

We were discussing that problem.

I have a 360 controller. The controls are still terribly bound and you cannot change them in the game, nor does a settings file exist. I used Xpadder to change them, but there's a big problem: the default controls persist even with Xpadder. For example, the game has fire set to the A button and if I assign jump to the A button instead, you fire
and jump at the same time. So you're basically stuck with whatever the game has the keys bound to.

I've been using Xpadder to map my Gamepad, the game works wonderfully.
And I don't really mind Rayman 2's keyboard controls, though why they then changed it for R3 I have no clue.

Hi, I know this is a really old thread, but I recently downloaded Rayman 2: The Great Escape and ran into the same problem. After about an hour of troubleshooting, I found a pretty nifty solve:
The solution comes in the form of
SharpKeys:
https://github.com/randyrants/sharpkeys/releases
You'll wanna download the latest .zip file, it's the easiest to setup and use. Unzip it and load the program.
SharpKeys allows you to 'swap' the keys around (for lack of a better word) so that you can link the WASD keys (which I prefer to use also) to the arrow keys, etcetera. It's pretty simple to use, so I won't explain it in-depth here, there are tutorials on YouTube. But basically, here's how I linked the keys to set up a keyboard which was easier to use. I use WASD for walking, Q and E to swivel the camera left and right respectively, J as attack, K as jump and L as sink (swim lower). Most of the other controls I left the same, although I probably will change them soon.
Here's how I linked them. This rearranged the keys into my setup above:
Key W to Arrow Up
Key S to Arrow Down
Key A to Arrow Left
Key D to Arrow Right
Key Q to Key W
Key E to Key Q
Key J to Spacebar
Key K to Key A
Key L to Key Z
Like I said, there are tutorials online, but basically, you click Add to make new bindings, Edit to change the bindings you've made, Delete and Delete All to remove bindings, and then click Write to Registry to save your changes. After saving them, you have to restart your computer for them to work. Obviously, to reset your keyboard to normal, all you have to do is Delete All, Write to Registry and restart your cpu. You can also save and load your key bindings, so you can save your Rayman 2 setup for future use.
Enjoy, hope this works for you.
WARNING: Don't change keys which are used in your password, or you might not be able to log back into your computer. Remove your password before changing the key bindings, or use the on-screen keyboard.

Nifty solution! However, did you know about this one, that doesn't affect password entry?
