What do you know about technology we don't?

This is a thread I created so some of us can learn more about technology, I guess. Like how are things like windows, candy, computers, etc. are made in factories. I'd like to know more about how a computer is assembled.

You're forgetting something - THREAD, not forum.

Anyway, did you know that they make black food colouring out of charcoal, and some red food colours out of beetles? ;P

Crushed beetles smell awful, there were some in our Graphics class once...

Graphics, you sure? The only class I knew you'd get to see dead animals would be Biology, either in jars or for dissection [had to draw a lamb's heart once eeeeeeewwww].

all we did was watching some stupid leaves through the microscope :boon:

It was to do with a use for it in engineering like paint or laqueur or something. I think it was just the shells, not the whole beetle though.

The only thing I dissected was a frog, and it was pretty boring to be honest. I suggested dissecting the teacher but he didn't seem to agree :tssk:

We only "dissected" a fish in 7th grade or something. I had gutted fish many times before then so it was pretty lame.

My science teacher in 7th grade thought about dissecting pig hearts. I'm glad we didn't

Computer assembly is easy, you can buy all the hardware and put it together, provided you have the compatible components.

Here's some pictures from my old build, but I use most of the parts now, except I now use a Core 2 Duo E8400 overclocked to 4.1GHz.

Here's everything in their packaging still: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/H ... ild002.jpg

Hardware in testing: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/H ... ild004.jpg

Hardware in the new case I use today: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/H ... G_0285.jpg - http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/H ... G_0286.jpg

As you may can tell, you don't need any special skill to put a system together with parts right there.

Now, as of today, that system I have, has 6GB RAM now, and I had recently obtained my E8400, and I overclocked it.

Proof of a successful, stable overclock of my E8400:

4.05GHz: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/H ... 2-12PM.jpg

4.104GHz: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/H ... 95_pas.jpg

Now I've been tweaking the RAM settings to get it performing better.

Now, when it comes to building or overclocking a computer, it takes time and patience to get things done right and stable. Now anyone can build a PC, but it isn't a good idea for one to overclock one themselves with out knowing the basics.

Now another awesome technology are laptops.

I'm so wanting this bad boy right here: http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-g73jha2-order-p-2761.html

I have had to dissect hearts, lungs, kidneys, eyeballs and pig's legs off the top of my head...

It's possible to have more than 16GB. All my motherboards have a 4GB limit though. :(

You can stuff as much RAM in your computer as you like, but if you have a 32-bit OS it can only utilise 4 GB. The 64-bit versions of Win7 have varying RAM limits depending on what version you have: The Starter and Home Basic versions have a limit of 8 GB, the Home Premium has a limit of 16 GB and the Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate have limits of 192 GB.

No, the amount the MCH can handle puts a cap on it too, and that's 4GB on all my MoBos.
