I'm video skyping my friend Jeff who lives in Taiwan, but is currently in Tokyo. As I'm talking to him, noise distortion starts consuming the video sound and I see him look around with wide eyes as ornaments from his ceiling start swinging, and he just yells "oh sh*t!" gets up, and runs away. About ten seconds later the call gets dropped due to a loss of connection during which his webcam is shaking so much everything was a low-FPS blur. This all happened two to three hours ago: about 11:30 PM(ish).
I run to CNN and sure enough, the main broadcast is of an earthquake stated to be a 7.1. They come to a point where they begin letting an earthquake viewer describe the after effects over a land line. They interrupt her to say it was upgraded to an 8.9, which means it's over 85 times as powerful as they thought it was at first. When the viewer continues describing, suddenly they lost contact with her, which could mean anything.
It's spawned a Tsunami that's headed imminently for Russia, and outwards to the Pacific. Hawaii is being completely evacuated, as the waves are roughly measured to be taller than the island itself as the wave travel at over 800 km/h. It's also headed for the West coast. It's for sure going to hit between San Fransisco and Portland, and a chance of hitting outside those bounds. Although the waves would hardly be considered lethal by the time they reach the West coast.
I'm kind of scared shitless for all those affected, and for my two friends down in Tokyo. This is the 5th largest earthquake recorded in the history of the world.
Watch the CNN video here:
EDIT:
Immediate update, they totally screwed up their wave measuring. Apparently the 800 km/h Tsunami is only a bit under ten feet tall, but that still can do some extreme damage:
I was at driving school when I saw this news on my smartphone. I ran as fast as possible to reach my home in order to call my host family living in Tokyo. After a couple of unreachable call, I was finally able to talk with them. Actually they are safe tough my 5 years old bro' was very scared.
I then try to reach another friend of mine (thanks to my Internet plan, I have free call to Japan) but I couldn't reach her. I tried sending e-mails to all of my Japanese contacts. Some couldn't reach (specially people living in the north...) but nearly everybody is safe.
My friend told my they are no more electricity in most of Japanese house but water and gaze is still usable in the region of Tokyo.
A teacher of my host school send me an e-mail, telling about 100 students going to stay the night at school. Nobody's injured.
I also had some news from a friend living in Hokkaido. Though tsunami were really big at this place, she's safe now.
About the magnitude, News are making some mistakes: it was 8.9 at the epicenter but it was about 4 or 5 in Tokyo.
I'm watching NHK (national Japanese TV channel) sending e-mail to my friends.
Only one of my friends, living near Sendai can't reach her father. Actually she thinks it's because most of the communication are interrupted but... well, I don't wanna think about bad things.
I would like to thanks Japanese people who were very calm and helped each other.

Thanks Rayfan! I had a friend who visited Japan, and I asked him (in his profile) if he was ok. He said he was.
I told him I would never forgive Japan if something happened to him. :3

This is what a friend of mine living in Tokyo said:
"Tokyo is now okay but only few trains and buses are moving now. Light of the city is now much darker than usual."
Wow, you probably had a lot to worry about for about. So glad everyone's okay!

I hadn't heard of that this morning, before Alex sent me a text about it. Well, as Japan is highly equipped against such disasters, I wonder if that was efficient, and how worse it would have been if they didn't have such equipment. I'm glad Alex' friends are safe, but I hope there won't be more people to mourn...

I heard the news in TV at lunch time, and holy cow: 8.9 in Richter's scale?!
One of the biggest earthquakes ever, it is quite disturbing to see the objects falling in the Japanese offices.
I'm also glad that Raylex's friends are safe, and I hope that earthquake and the tsunami don't do more harms.

Such a relief about Rayl's friends - I hope everyone's able to recover. Unfortunately, my friend Kaoru is pretty certain she's lost 3 relatives living near Sendai. I can't say if it's verified, but the fact they're completely out of contact is worry enough.
What I wonder is why this wasn't foreseen. Truly incredible, how something so powerful could come without warning... I really can't help but think of NGE/Akira/other post-trauma scenes of Japan.

Thanks you dude. Actually the "highly equipped Japanese building" and so forth were enough strong to resist at such earthquake... At least in the region of Tokyo.
By the way I finally had news from my best friend! She was out of battery and couldn't reply.

It was really long, about 2 minutes. I think that was the most horrible.

Well, it's nearly impossible to predict such a natural unfortunate things... but you can prepare yourself to such things.
Actually it's still earthquaking a bit in Tokyo. My host fam couldn't sleep (and so do I) so we chatted.
Now, I try to be as helpful as I can. I mean, the "Japan experience" really change my life and I think today is the day to say "thanks" to Japanese people.
Do you know some ways to be helpfully?

I woke up at 6 AM with a news reporter saying ''Tsunami alert for all Chile'', i though the earthquake happened here and somehow i didn't notice it, then the news reporter said ''Earthquake in Japan''.
There was a Tsunami here in my hometown at 23:36 PM, it wasn't big, like just 40 cm above the normal level of the water, but because my dad worries too much, we went to Alto Hospicio via car (Alto means high, so i suppose you will know that place is 1 KM more high from Iquique.) and slept in my grandma's house.
I hope the people over there in Japan are okay.
PS: My sister was more worried about some japanese singer called Blaise Plant

*canadian singer actually. he's on twitter and making reports and such in his area. they got power back but it seems he lives in an area close to the tsunami disaster and is saying that in another coastal town they're finding bodies getting washed up to shore <8C and lots of aftershocks. not good D:
i think you need to consider what i have to say
Now heres where it gets even more interesting.
The Mayan calendar ends on 12-21-12, And the spiritual galactic alignment of planets in our universe also occurs on 12-21-12, yes?
Well..
Usa lost many lives on 9-11-01
Now japan has many and much more lives on 3-10-11
Add the 2 together and you get 12-21-12
Now you know very well of the numerology they use.
I dug this up in an 'Illuminati' thread in another forum.
It's almost a creepypasta. :s
This is all some really shocking stuff. I've been following since it happened, pretty much.

Heard about it starting from Friday morning and it is truly tragic, especially how they're now comparing the damage to that caused by the two atomic bombs back in 1945. But of course people have to say stupid shit about it on both sides, like "this is payback for Pearl Harbour", and "NOOOO NOT TEH MANGAAA!!" and I really want to punch people for that.
And just so people know, I think I donated like, 20 quid to the Red Cross when the Haiti earthquake struck last year, so don't think I only care about it just because it's Japan; I feel bad for everyone that's had to cop all of the shit Mother Nature had to toss there, Australia [floods] and New Zealand [earthquake].

I've been hearing the "revenge for Pearl Harbor" one quite a bit. I find that one the dumbest, just because not even some of the US vets that survived through that can hold anger toward them after all these years.

Well, there are at least small threads of good news coming. My friend's family have been found. It's little things like that making the whole thing more bearable.
