A Problematic Rayman Revolution CD...

I was going to post this misadventure in Rayman Glitches, but it's not so much a glitch as it is a dodgy copy.
So, I got my hands on a copy of Rayman Revolution , and yesterday me and my brother go to play only to find that the game behaved really strangely. First of all, the splash screens at the beginning went by really really fast. I'd normally say this as a good thing, because it means I can just get on with the game, but this seemed really odd. Then, none of the music played. On a couple of attempts at booting the game the first few notes of the menu track played before stopping. Sound effects were also really quiet and the game froze at nearly every screen, causing us to have to open the disk drawer and close it again to continue, which is a little off putting. As a result we couldn't get past the first cut scene which froze after the first line.
What occurred to me as the oddity of this is that I've never seen a CD game behave like this before. Usually scratched, cracked or dirty CD's result in the game to either not run at all, freeze on the first screen with no fuss or perhaps garble the sprites up a little (I remember this happening to an old copy of Rayman 1 for the PS1 once

). The other thing was that the disk was perfectly clean, with no dirt marks or scratches at all. We tried cleaning it for good measure but to no result.
The instant assumption was that this was a pirate copy. Yes, I know it seems farfetched, but we once accidentally brought a pirate copy of Super Mario 64 DS from the same shop which froze in a very creepy way upon completing the first level

. However, none of the signs were there. It is clearly a legit copy of the game, complete with the PS2 hologram.
So now what? I'm left with a completely useless copy of Rayman Revolution. The only other thing I can think of is that the game was always like this, and it was some bizarre factory fault. It look's like we're going to have to return it if there's nothing else to do, and end up Rayman Revolution-less again

I have similar sound problems. The second time Rayman plays the levels (the time when he uses his acquired powers to find more cages and Lums), there is no music AT ALL in any of the levels, and the sounds are sometimes jolty too.
I've also experienced a weird helicopter glitch where the helicopter noise remains with Rayman throughout the level, even when the helicopter is not activated. Sometimes you can hear Rayman making strange noises as well!
Make no mistake, Revolution is a really glitchy game, even more so than Rayman 3, at least in my experience.

I think that’s just the way Revolution is.

Yes, the helicopter audio glitch is an infamous one.

Possibly, yeah. It does give the playing a strangely pleasant atmosphere, glitch or not.

Can you get some pictures or videos of the exact problems?

Even the Wikipedia article on Rayman 2 mentions this one:
Whenever the player revisits levels, the music in most of them is replaced with ambience(sic)
It's just the way RR works, as strange as that may be

Unfortunately I don't have a capture card so the only way I could do that is with my awful camera work

Off-topic: Electoon, what are your views on the recent revelation that modified versions of Rayman 1 characters, creatures, enemies and environments will be appearing in Rayman Origins? I’d be interested to hear what you think, considering that you’re primarily a Rayman 1 fan who didn’t particularly like the sequels. Are you glad to see these elements return, or are you troubled by the redesigns?

The second time Rayman plays the levels (the time when he uses his acquired powers to find more cages and Lums), there is no music AT ALL in any of the levels (...)
It isn't a in-game problem. It is normal to happen after revisiting a level.
At least I never had the other problems mentioned in this topic.

Off-topic:I'm a bit "so-so will have to wait and see game-play before I make a judgement" about a large amount of it. It's a strange idea to mix the Rayman 1 and 2 characters together and I'm interested to see how they pull it off. I do find it a bizarre that it's meant to be a prequel yet Rayman has the silly hoodie design, not really pleased with the art style choice.
I am glad they are showing some love for Rayman 1 forever and was really happy to discover the return of the Electoons! I thought they were long forgotten

. Sadly, unless they release Origins for PC I won't be able to play since I don't own any of the consoles it's being released for
On-topic: I'm probably just going to return my RR copy next time I'm down town and hope another one turns up. I still find these problems to be very strange however...

Fortuneatly they weren't forgotten.
I forgot to tell this before in the Rayman Origins topic but, in these 8 years period of "silence" I got about 4 of those years "turned-off"/"outdated" from Rayman's gaming universe. Do you know what made me return back? Rayman 1. The last time I had played Rayman 1 was in 2003, and my computer was still a Windows ME and I hadn't a PlayStation/PlayStation 2. I was missing the game a lot but at the same time feeling frustrated to not being able to put R1 working in DOSBox. In May of 2008 I remind that I had a PlayStation 1 emulator and I went to search for the ROM. And I was able to put it work. The nostalgia was such that it was more than enough to awake again my entusiasm about Rayman games more than ever. (Also thanks to syntheticgerbil I was able to find D-Fend Reloaded as an alternative to the DOSBox, to put R1 of PC working)
Rayman 1 will always have a place in my heart.

I'm thinking of selling my copy of RR actually as I have the anniversary set now. Unfortunately some PS2 games do end up not working [I know what that's like!] from wear and tear and the best bet is to indeed return them. I did manage get some fixed thanks to CD cleaning services but it might be too much hassle. Some people just do not look after their games especially kids! >:C
I've always been a console gamer while playing PC games on and off so Origins shouldn't be a problem for me to get though a PC would be a bonus for screenshot taking etc as much, just hope that 1) it has no DRM 2) is not on Steam and 3) isn't going to be made by a shitty division like Ubi Sofia did with RRR1.
