Pirate Bash Brothers: Gladeators

Pirates, all hands on deck! The superior requires the strongest of yer men, the fiercest of you lot, the toughest of the shipmates to join forces and battle our eternal nemesis: Rayman! We have driven him into a corner, but we are outnumbered; with help from the Knaaren and the sourcerer Mr. Dark, we will be able to beat him, once and for all. Rejoice, maties! Our ships are ready to set sail; we leave for the Glade of Dreams in the morrow. At positions! The furious Admiral joins us!
~Lunette, Underlord of the Pirate Army.

It is true, Pirate comrades, the time is nigh. That walking eggplant has been localised and we are coming to get even with him, once and for all. We will make him and his friends pay for what he did! Together, we stand tall; together, we will vanquish; together, we shall drink our victory plum juice!

UPDATE 2015
It's been a while since I've posted updates on this main page. However, I have now begun with the first conceptual arena. There will be a video released later this week (written March 7th) showing the details.
In short, I'm exploring how the game should look and feel at its core. And I want you to chime in! People have always been enthousiastic about progress, but when it comes to content, only few have dared. Please, do join in! There are many things you could do.
Especially in these first, conceptual stages, I'd love to see characters be adopted by others, see concept drawings, hear some music.

Basically, I ask you, community, to join in on the 'community' in this community project. :D

I will deliver on my end within the week (if Uni doesn't screw me over completely)
[UPDATE 5th of April, 2015 - Yeah so Uni ended up completely screwing me. :P Sorry guys, there will be a video, but I have three weeks of exams, moving and other things going on right now. Hang in there!]. This project is alive ... and kicking!

MEANWHILE

UPDATE 2014
Hello community, Shrooblord speaking! The project is not dead, not by far. It's been shelved. But I'll pick it back up and blow the dust off of it sooner or later. Probably later. I'm currently working on a different Rayman-based game, one that requires a lot of effort to build, which is partly why I've strayed from this topic for so long.
HOWEVER, I still very much like to create this game with the lot of you! We are still conceptualising things, so don't hesitate to voice your opinion too!

I realise that a lot of people on the current staff list have since moved on from this forum (or are ghosting), but that doesn't really matter - we'll sort out all things in need of doing once we get to that stage.
===
UPDATE November
Having milled it over in my mind, I like the name Gladeators and it will become the new working title of this project.

The Pirates have returned to the Glade of Dreams and are seeking to wreak havoc once more, in a showdown against all odds. Join in, as the biggest fight ever to take place is about to commence: this is the Pirate Bash Brothers' debut: Gladeators.
This game, in the setting of scenery familiar and new, will become a community effort to create a game for all to participate. Together, we will set up a game similar to the ways of Brawl, in which each can create their very own version of official characters to join in the fight. Maybe, if progress goes well, we'll even be able to release some sort of PBBG DIY kit, in which other, new fans, can help create new content for the game. However, this is of course all just speculation for now. First, we'll need to see how high morale is to do this. The dream is to create a game from scratch, based on an arena-like fighting style, in which players can choose any of the characters made by us, inspired by the Rayman franchise. Maybe other UbiSoft characters will be able to join in as guest stars, who knows?
It would be a really cool community effort to get this thing going. The thought alone already hyped up a few members out there, including myself. The thought is to join in as we all create a certain aspect, or certain aspects, of the game. The final product would be fully multiplayer, hopefully online, with singleplayer capabilities if we feel like it, though I don't know if it's a requirement. It would contain artwork made by us, for us, music by the very people you will find here and programmed by the same community we are all part of.

So if you want to participate in any way, please, sign up! Just leave your thoughts on what aspect of the game you would like to help out in. All help is appreciated!

The idea here is that everyone can adopt a character that will be in the game. What you do is try to think of how the character will look, fight, animate and even sound, if possible. You don't have to do all this by yourself, don't worry. We're here to help. But you have the freedom to do it alone, if you want to.

Sure! I think it's pretty obvious we'll need all the help we can get!

What kind of graphics would they be? Pixel or 3D graphics?

I think it would be obvious that if in the SSBB style the way we'll be looking at the screen is 2D. I'd like to make some scenery concepts for the game now and then. Not too much though because I'm going to be busy this year of school. Illustrator work and such.

Well according to the "modeling" position and the "Arena-like gameplay," I'd infer that this is a 3D game.

If this project gets on the move, I'd sign up for the musics and animation.

I like drawing so I can make you concept art, though I'm mainly good at characters.

Well either way. If it's using models, then I'll animate them.

I want to see your interpretation of yourself. :P I have my own self-character as well. Take a wild guess at the name.

Oooh, this concept is nice. ^^ If I have time (which I think I will have very few but oh well xx) I could try to draw some concepts of Razor's attacks. Have you got an idea of what his attacks would be? I can also create another character who would be in Razor's side, my main OC Clara. Thought, I don't confirm anything, as my medecine studies may become tough soon.

I hope you can get further in this concept! I'm really interested about it. :)

Wow, a lot of response already!
As for the 2D/3D problem, I had stated that the first thing we had to do is work out exactly what we want. Since it's a community game, I wanted to have the community have the decision over the progress of the game. Of course I'll decide some things myself, but I'd like to know what you guys would like best.
As of now, I can only think of two directions this game can go in:
Fake 3D like Brawl
Real 3D like Rayman M

Of course there could be alternatives, but I'd like to hear what you guys want!

Concerning time and time constraints: yeah, I won't have a lot of time this year either, but as a fun project on the side, this could be our hobby, no?
And now for the matter of artwork: all who wish to submit anything are very welcome indeed. I will put your names on the list!
Rayfan, I would much like for you to animate, if you wish to. I could try also, but I haven't even begun to grasp how things work in detail yet. I animated a character for my own fangame already, though that is a robot and thus makes ridgid movements that don't require any animation skills. I have made a lot of 2D animations in the past though (and put a lot of effort into it) so I know what animating is all about - also the hardships that come with it.
And Rulez, I would like to see Lunette indeed, but I might consider to do him myself, since he's always been one of my favourite characters. This will mean he shall appear as he shall in my game, which is just a tad different than the original. Don't let that stop you though! Keep on drawing, bro!

So, points that need to be addressed:
=> What style of game will this become? Brawl-like 2D, Rayman M-like 3D or something completely different?

PS
I'm talking all business-like so I can quickly get to the point... that's all.
PPS
This is fun already. :mryellow:

Do fake 3D thats easier (plus it has the awesome super smash bros. feel to it)

Well, I'm not sure if it's all that much easier, really. I mean, you still need to make everything in 3D and then just 'flatten' it on-screen (display it from such an angle that it looks quite 2Dish). The only advantage I see in it right now is that you don't have to think about depth as all the characters will stand on the same depth in the field.

Just listing pro's and cons here. I'm not trying to bring any ideas down. Like I said, it's your call, everyone.

EDIT:
How about I make a Webs page for this game, so we can have a separate place to talk about it? I could also open polls on there to inquire about certain aspects of the game. That way we could have different fora for the different aspects of the game? Think about it - once (or if) this thing actually starts to launch, I'll consider opening a new account for the game.

Fake 2d doesn't need any turn anymations (and the rayman m/arena camera is anoying in a chaos bases game like this that's also THE reason why i didn't liked that game so much)
