hello uhhhhhhh this is pobert-eii, first time posting here
i came to here since this is one of the few Rayman communities that i know of outside of twitter

so if you're a chump like me and like watching misc. Rayman ephemera (like commercials, parodies, etc) you may have seen the infamous Rayman 2 E3 trailer. while there are interesting differences between the level design and the aesthetics, i'm not going to talk about any of that.

instead, what i'm going to be talking about would be the unusual pre-rendered scenes in the trailer which consists of Rayman being launched from a portal, gaming on a chair and large monitor, and getting knocked out by... something.

for a long while, it was just assumed that these were made for the trailer, but i've made some recent discoveries along with some other people in Discord and Twitter that there might actually be more to the scenes, and it might've not actually been made for the trailer at all!

to start off on where I made these discoveries, clips from the trailer and the Rayman model were used in various commercials for the original Rayman which are dated around 1996 - 1997, but the important takeaway here is that these clips are not only of higher quality, but they are either longer than what was shown in the R2 trailer or have an entirely new scene. https://web.archive.org/web/20210104222 ... 2743552000

someone on discord showed me a "GamesMaster" promo, and aside from a Cyber Flash skit being put in there what it showed me was various scenes that were NOT from the trailer, but also featured The Hunter from the Rayman 2's 2D prototype. this was starting to reveal SOMETHING.

later on, ribshark from twitter revealed that there exists a entry in ina.fr detailing "Rayman's Training" http://inatheque.ina.fr/doc/TV-RADIO/DO ... s-training, which sounded a lot like the short. what supports this is this somehow-STILL-up page for "Rayman training" by what appears to be a recording studio. https://web.archive.org/web/20070714085 ... ?article39 this also includes a unique screencap of Rayman not seen anywhere else.

so what this means is that for 23 years straight, there exists a lost 2D-era Rayman 2 short named Rayman's Training and no one had put two and two together afaik that the scenes in various commercials and the E3 trailer were actually from this short.

so im asking you guys, is this something new, and do any of you know anything about this lost short?

I am trying my hardest to get ahold of this short, I am very interested in seeing it. Since INA still has it, there is certainly a chance.

It's amazing that we're still finding out about unknown content after all this time. I sadly can't help with the short as I don't know anything about it, however I'm curious as to what appears in the GamesMaster video in the shot right after the one with the hunter from the 2D prototype. Does it look familiar to anyone?

You know, I just had a small realization: There's many things in Rayman 2's development that was explained, even including the weird Baby Globox unused icon.

Could it be that it wasn't actually meant for Rayman 2... but it was actually meant for Rayman's training?
It's a bit of a reach, but if you look at the GamesMaster clips, the aesthetics and the style just barely match the unused FMV's look.

No, that is definitely the old Rayman 2. The video was was included with the Rayman 2 2D prototype files on the PS1 disc, and its environment matches one of the R2 concept art pieces exactly.
I would guess Rayman's Training was a way for Ubisoft artists to test how Rayman and his world would look in 3D. The same artists probably worked on both the R2 art and Rayman's Training around the same time, which would explain the style similarities and R2 characters appearing in Rayman's Training.

Oh hey, I remember watching that FMV on YouTube somewhere a few years back, nice to see it again! I never realized that it was a 3d concept art, that's really neat! That rabbit thing is what interests me the most, I refer to it as Raybit.

I don't think I have ever seen this video before. Heck, the rabbit-like thingy is not even mentioned on RayWikI!

The thing that has always intrigued me about that video is the Star Wars audio in the background. Pretty weird placeholder if you ask me.

As for Rayman's Training, hopefully it gets found one day, I do think it looks very interesting.

I think the stuff from GamesMaster promo might come from different sources. For me it almost looks like the hunter doesn't belong to "Raymans Training" and is as well as the "Rabbid"-FMV from an unrelased rayman 2 intro/cutscene.

Anyone already asked/will ask farravox if anyone of them can remember what this movie was about exactly?

I didn't recognize the music, but now you mention it, this definitely sounds like gunshots from Star Wars. Maybe you've just uncovered that Rayman was due to appear in the second trilogy, only to be replaced with Jar Jar Binks?

The "punching bag" guy that iHeckler used to identify with the mythical Tomato Taco? I'm pretty sure that wasn't in L'Histoire, because I'd have remembered it for that! Could be wrong though…

And if Rayman was supposed to be in Star Wars, then how come the Enterprise from Star Trek appears in Rayman 3, given the rivalry between the two "Star" franchises?

Wow, I never knew there was even concept art for this. It looks pretty nice and awesome to learn more about this series everyday. There was a lot of effort put into the franchise, it's insane.

Wow, I actually haven't seen that concept art image before. That is scarily 1:1. I had a hunch that Rayman's Training was the "missing link" between 2D Rayman 2 and 3D Rayman 2, but I didn't know just how much.

I emailed them but received no reply.

I also reached out to the INA some time ago regarding the short, and someone said they'd look into it, but no news from them since. I'll probably just send them a reminder.

Well, as far as we know, Tomato Taco was one of those things that "through a convoluted process, a user's brain generate[d]", and got "typed into Wikipedia". Probably a kid who didn't know any better than putting fake stuff on there! I can't remember why exactly iHeckler identified him with that character from the trailer...

Of course, there's an outside chance that we were all wrong, and that character actually was named Tomato Taco, and the Wikipedia contributor was actually an inside source who didn't realize he'd been cut.
