Rayman 3 on digiBLAST

Hi! Been a while since I posted here, but it's good to pop back once in a while. Hope everyone is doing well!

My friend J-D (you can find him on Discord as J-D (Ringside)#2511) is a huge Rayman fan; in particular he loves Rayman 3. So much so that he went out of his way to buy a digiBlast and the digiBlast version of R3. He decided to document his discoveries; since he's not on a lot of social media, he asked me to get his findings out there.

As of this writing, he has beaten the game at least once, and documented every single change he encountered. For the most part, it's similar to the GBA version, but some of the most notable differences are:
  • Every level from the GBA version that used Mode 7 effects (like the Swamp of Begoniax or Magma Mayhem) is not present at all.
  • The above makes collecting all 999 Lums impossible.
  • The music sounding much more MIDI-esque than the GBA version.
  • The sound effects play at the wrong pitch.
  • Some of Murfy's dialogue is different (for example, his line telling the player they've unlocked a new multiplayer level has been changed, instead of being entirely scrapped).
  • Multiplayer functionality is also absent in this port, unsurprisingly. (However, Endgame Studios stated that the port was developed using the GBA version's framework, which more than likely means multiplayer maps remain in the files.)
Here are some images, also taken by J-D:

(I would upload all of this stuff onto the Wiki, but I get error messages, so this is the next best thing lol)

Lastly, J-D is looking into buying the AV-out accessory for the digiBlast in order to record footage of the game for everyone to see.

I hope that all of this can shed some light onto a relatively unknown version of the portable Rayman 3, lol.

Thanks for reading this wall of text! If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

It is great that you were able to share this (thanks also to J-D), this could be used to expand the small Digiblast section from the R3 GBA article. You can contact one of the admins if you have trouble with the wiki.

Thanks Rudie, and J-D! I appreciate your sharing these findings here!

Yet another half-baked port then with zero attention to what's important to the game's story. If they're gonna do it at this level, why bother doing it at all :tssk:

So I have just updated the wiki by adding all this new info about this port. :D
I contacted J-D, he's really glad to share with the community these discoveries, he has bought the game to document it and I love him for this.
He will provide us with other stuff in future that can be added to the wiki, if it's too much maybe we should create a new page about this Rayman 3 port :P

Also, thank you too Rudie for helping with the research of some info!

It's rather interesting that the Mode7 levels are removed. What happened to the curtains that lead to them in the level selection screens? Would it be possible to share some screenshots?

RayCarrot added the digiBLAST version to Ray1map, but its data file was identical or nearly identical to the GBA version's data: the mode7 levels are present (the multiplayer levels too!) and the curtains leading to them on the level selection screens are still there. We think that they might be removed through code.

Another question: you mentioned Murfy's dialogue changing. It was changed from "Way to go!!! That gives you an extra multiplayer level!" to "Way to go!!! That gives you an extra Bonus level!" But then what does it unlock? :p

You know Rayman, you need to have every game on every console ever!

J-D says those curtains are entirely absent. As for screenshots, J-D can only take pictures right now, but he says that he can send them your way on Discord, if you add him on there.

Wait, there's a ROM dump of this version? My Google-fu gave no results.

According to J-D, the text was changed to just "Way to go!!" and it unlocks absolutely nothing lol. Not too surprised!

Yes, the link has only been shared on Twitter as far as I know: https://twitter.com/puckipedia/status/1 ... 0246748161

That's super weird. The text is definitely "Way to go!!! That gives you an extra Bonus level!" in this version and it's translated to all included languages.
On N-Gage the text is cut off after "Way to go!!!". "That gives you an extra Bonus level!" is a separate string, but on Digiblast the two strings are separated only by a space. So they must have cut off the string after "Way to go!!!" through code... for every language... what a weird port :p

Speaking of weirdness, I extracted the soundtrack (you need an .xm player, something like foobar will do):
R3 Digiblast OST.7z
(334.06 KiB) Downloaded 122 times
It's the worst sounding Rayman soundtrack I've heard yet, so this probably won't make it to RayTunes.
There was a midi file included with the files that's almost identical to my own midi rip of the GBA version. It seems this version's XM files were made with a similar process, except they didn't preserve the original soundfont when converting to XM (though they easily could have) and used General Midi samples instead.

I'm terrified to imagine what that even sounds like. I don't mind the MIDI's in the GBC game or other handheld ones like it, but the idea that this port's soundtrack is THAT bad, if not utterly unlistenable, is just terrifying. Especially since I enjoy lots of Rayman music no matter how MIDI'd...

Until now I had no idea that the digiBLAST existed, but man that backlighting is blinding. I mean, at least it has backlighting, but it makes me appericate our old GBA a little more. At least it had the whole game and listenable MIDI's.

This is a very interesting topic, I'd like to learn more about this digiBLAST thing.
Things like how many games it had, what all those dvd buttons are for, and how uncomfortable it is to actually hold. It looks awkward without any side grips...

The music isn´t so bad, it just like a simple MIDI, or a NES music, (or even Atari music, but they way they ported the music is cool)

...Oh ok, that probably isn't so bad then. I'm used to chiptunes cause I play lots of older games. I'd give it a listen but I don't know what an .xm player or foobar is, all I have is Windows Media Player. Is that the same thing?

That is amazing! I didn't even know that Glasgow tool was a thing. I wonder if it can be used to dump arcade boards.
...Now I wonder how feasible a digiBLAST emulator even is... or even if somebody would want to play its games lol.

You can also play .xm files with VLC Media Player :)

I don't know what a VLC is :boon:
I'm terrible at computers

I'm sure the all-knowing Google can help me out, but thanks for the helpful info!

Oops, I messed up the quote thing...but that was a lot of quotes altogether.
Anywho thanks Itzal!

I finally converted the full OST to OGG!

Here´s the Google Drive link:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vmWfS9 ... sp=sharing

It´s a zip file with all the OST converted from .xm to .ogg, it´s 109,9mb of size

Droolie, UPLOAD it to RayTunes, it needs to be THERE, it´s new Rayman material found!

Thanks J-D and Rudie Radio Waves for bringing all this information to the community, and ItzalDrake for updating the wiki. I'm really curious to learn more about those text discrepancies, it's so weird that I'm beginning to think there might be several versions of this game. 🤔

Yeah, that kinda feels like it makes the most sense, but then in that case does this other version (which was dumped) actually have bonus levels?

(Also, why don't we have a smiley that can be used instead of the ubiquitous thinking emoji, when we have so many other good smileys? :fou:)

Because people never suggest additional smileys! I'd love to add a new one every now and then. :D
