It may be on things I type from my mind, but what made you think mine would be higher? :P

Not sure really, I guess it might have to do with your experience with computers in comparison to my own.

Well you would think so wouldn't you, especially with Master's post count as well. It's not like he doesn't get much practice! Haha, but it doesn't always follow. Just usually the more time you spend doing something the better you get at it :P Well that's how I got good at typing. Mostly through instant messaging and forums.

My typing speed has dramatically reduced, primarily because I'm now using my phone or tablet over my PC/laptop, and of course the onscreen keyboard totally different and doesn't really support touch typing. Does no one else find this?

I don't really do well with touch screen keyboards either, but seeing as I use both physical and touch keyboards regularly, I don't think my overall WPM is affected.

Oh I hate touch screen. On my iPhone I don't type with my thumbs. I use my 1 index finger. I'm pretty fast with it though. Touch keyboards aren't as forgiving IMO :p waaaaaaaaaay more mistakes

The other thing that annoys me with touchscreens is the horrible default auto-correction, which if you don't turn off will happily initialise any less commonly used word and change perfectly ordinary words into unrecognisably different ones..

I'd hate to have it not on because that means I'd actually have to be accurate when typing on a touch screen :P

I don't get why autocorrect can't be as accurate as Swype Type. It's maybe one in a hundred words that Swype ever gets wrong, whereas with autocorrect, it's like one in three.

Just for note, I also hate it when these WPM sites provide you with things you would never, ever say or type today, it just makes typing awkward. Why can't they provide us with something phrased more normally or day-to-day?

Because it's a good test of your typing? :P If it's unusual, someone more used to typing will be able to cope with it better then the someone who isn't as advanced :P

This.

Especially when one simply doesn't capitalize the name of a month. :tssk:

That's not the point though, we're typing what's in our head, we aren't transcribing what our eyes are feeding us, and on top of that, bizarre words and phrasings that we aren't used to - one could say that it's standardising potential bias, but peoples' coping mechanisms differ greatly in that regard. I'm terrible at it since I don't read much faster than I type, due to impaired tracking in my eyesight (among other vision problems). This wouldn't be as big of a problem if I were skimming over and taking in things I was a little more familiar with, and this isn't to set me aside as a special case, I'm sure this would be the case with everyone.

Amusingly, if anything, whenever I take a break from something and come back later, I'm suddenly a bit better at it, probably because I've had time to shed off temporary habits.

Well Adsolution I suppose it's more of a 'how well you copy typing' test rather then just typing things from your head. Copying typing is the whole package, e.g reading and such.

Why can't we have a WPM test that allows us to type what we want within a minute's time to calculate our WPM?

They should then display what you typed i.e. provide for you a screenshot.

Also if people are just typing what they want, then there's no way to compare results fairly :P You're not comparing like with like!

All I was saying is that I think it would make a little more sense for them to attempt to simulate regular typing as much as possible, which would mean providing us with words and phrases we're more prone to typing day-by-day. These WPM tests aren't dissimilar to having you type in a different language.

That's true; but even if they did that I still think it's the same difference. Because with the current test everybody still has to over-come those odd words; as I said before hand I still think it's a good test of how you deal with your typing, & reading etc. A pure typing test probably shouldn't have unusual words in; but typing is generally a 'full package' kinda deal; so you really need to have both skills to succeed. Well that's just my take on it anyhow.
