Because with the current test everybody still has to over-come those odd words; as I said before hand I still think it's a good test of how you deal with your typing, & reading etc. A pure typing test probably shouldn't have unusual words in; but typing is generally a 'full package' kinda deal; so you really need to have both skills to succeed. Well that's just my take on it anyhow.
Not really, that's what meeting transcribists in the 90s needed to succeed.

Well for the most part people aren't under a time pressure during normal typing if that's what you mean

I mean, at what point in your life have you ever actually had to transcribe exactly what you're hearing/reading? Maybe if someone's reading you a phone number, username or serial code, but at what point have you ever had to do so at full speed?

There have been zero occasions in my life in which I've had to transcribe what I'm reading/hearing at full speed. As I said, that's a task pretty much solely resting within the duties of meeting transcribists, and even moreso before voice recognition software existed.

It's only relevant if you're a court clerk or meeting's typist.

That's true. How do you suggest they test typing then? :P Or is it one of these things that's hard to test because of so many variable factors etc

There's no perfect method, but I already gave a suggestion, a rather simple and dandy one in my opinion:
Adsolution wrote:All I was saying is that I think it would make a little more sense for them to attempt to simulate regular typing as much as possible, which would mean providing us with words and phrases we're more prone to typing day-by-day. These WPM tests aren't dissimilar to having you type in a different language.

that sounds about right Ad. Besides, my WPM is so inconsistent that they should be just trying to type properly! :P

Wow, I'm still at 68? Dearie me.
EDIT: Nevermind, went into serious mode and put laptop on a surface so I could type properly, got 76 now.

I haven't touched a physical keyboard for months, so mine would be considerably less than 68 I think.

Yeah a proper surface helps a lot.

I got a 74, no errors. I would have been faster had I not had a couple of slow down spurts and corrected a couple of things.

I'm the type that does better by typing what's on my mind over what I read on the screen.

Anyone know where I can learn touch typing?
I cold do much faster if it was just typing what I was thinking or typing something I knew off by heart, but I have to look up at the screen and back down again every couple of words, so when I took the test I got a score of 40wpm...

On a touchscreen? No. I'm only fast with the iPad because it's laid out like a keyboard. But because of the lack of physical feedback, I make typos like a mofo. Autocorrect don't help, neither, my man.

54 WPM using the classic 2-Fingers-Searching-For-The-Keys-System. In my defense though, there was a word where I just had to stare at the screen for several seconds before I took it in. :P

I will test my skill. When I'm not with my skill on a test.

Hm, I'm much better with touch typing these days, I have to be looking at what I'm typing though. Not so much the keyboard however.

The iPad is alright for me to type on, but my phone is a whole 'nother story. :mefiant:

I tend to use the swiping function on Google's Keyboard, but it's a pain when one's fingers are frozen.

Ah yes, this. Let's get it done BRAH
Your speed was: 70wpm.

You made 1 mistake, your mistake is shown in bold text:

Ten weeks before he died, Mr Mohun Biswas, a journalist of Sikkim Street, St James, Port of Spain, was sacked. He had been ill for some time. In less than a year he had spent more than nine weeks at the Colonial Hospital and convalesced at home for even longer. When the doctor advised him to take a complete rest the Trinidad Sentinel had no choice. It gave Mr Biswas thee months' notice and continued, up to the time of his death, to supply him every morning with a free copy of the paper.
Sweeeeet.
