Re: Knaaren vs Grolem
You're missing the point here anyway. Guardian is not a species taxon or a rank, it's a title, an occupation if you will. They might as well have been called Sentinels or Watchmen. The title Guardian simply implies that they guard something, namely a mask of Polokus.
I see how Axel, Foutch and Grolem 13 could somehow be related - perhaps they are cousins or brothers/sisters of some sort. Umber just seems to be an enchanted god figure or something tribal like that - whatever they all are, they're probably not 'Grolems'. I like the idea of the numbering though, but I would think Polokus would bother to give the thirteenth Grolem a name too if that is what he did for all the others.

Re: Knaaren vs Grolem
Ok, ok. I'm starting to get the gist of it now. We agree that they are all 'guardians' and that Axel, Foutch, and Grolem 13 might be related somehow, such as brothers of some sort; and that they might be the same species; but probably not Grolems. So, let's just say that Polokus create the Guardians to guard his masks. Maybe he created them to match the certain environments. So, in the 'Sanctuary of fire and stone', as it is a temple, maybe he saw it best to include a Giant Enchanted Figure to guard. Then in the 'Sanctuary of water and Ice' and 'Sanctuary of Rock and Lava', he needed the deadly... er, Axels? Pyramids? Guardians (exclusing Umber)? Axelfoutgrols? (Resisting Grolem Urge)... to guard the mask, as they might have been needed. One question I must ask though; why is Umber Passive?Shrooblord wrote:Guardian is not a species taxon or a rank, it's a title, an occupation if you will. Re: Knaaren vs Grolem
Maybe he has been the god figure of some tribe for many, many years and has seen the tribe kill itself in mindless bloodshed and violence, and he will have nothing to do with any such activities. That's all speculation though. Probably it's the fact that he seems to be sculpted out of one solid block of material, and the only thing that moves is the ornament in his chest. He couldn't do much to try and harm Rayman anyway. But who sais he's passive? It's possible he's actually trying to kill Rayman by drowning him in lava when he 'ferries him across'. It wasn't until later ports that they made him speak and counsel Rayman; until then, we never really get to see Umber's personality.

Ah. I never really thought of it that way. Maybe the loveable Umber is really the most devious guardian of them allShrooblord wrote: But who sais he's passive? It's possible he's actually trying to kill Rayman by drowning him in lava when he 'ferries him across'.

Re: Knaaren vs Grolem
If I'm correct, in the PS1 version, Umber has dialogue in which he says he wants to help Rayman.

Re: Knaaren vs Grolem
Exactly. In this version, Umber doesn't drown himself and wills to help Rayman. He was the only guardian to not be affected by the explosion of the Heart of the World, he was even warned by Ly about what was going on. Foutch was the worst case, he went completely mad and didn't listen neither Ly nor Rayman at all.RayFan9876 wrote:If I'm correct, in the PS1 version, Umber has dialogue in which he says he wants to help Rayman.

Re: Knaaren vs Grolem
The other Guardians went mad because of the destroyed Heart of the World? This gives me new insight. I just thought they were created the way they were so they'd be undefeatable and fearsome, wheras they should have been undefeatable and respectable, if it weren't for the Pirates (those meddling kids).

Re: Knaaren vs Grolem
When they were created, it was mainly to guard the masks hidden in the Sanctuaries. However in PS1 version of Rayman 2, it is explained why the guardians act aggressively against Rayman. It is true that in the classical version (and RR too) Umber "drowns" himself in lava, but at the same time was waiting for Rayman to land in his head and somehow helping him to go to the other side. It could be either a killing or a helpful intention, but truth to be said, in PS1 he's clearly helping out.

If you're talking about Grolem 13, then definitely Grolem13. But if Reflex went into Leptys mode, who knows?
Re: Knaaren vs Grolem
Reflex or Reflux?
