Why isn't Ubisoft able to decide on whether Rayman is the only member of his species or not?

There were multiple members of Rayman's species in the first game then Origins retconned them into being teensies to keep Rayman's status as the only one of his kind that was established in Rayman 2 but the descriptions for the characters you unlock in Rayman Legends, Adventures and Mini confirms that these characters are not costumes but individual members of Rayman's species.

I always thought Tarayzan and the Magician etc. were all Rayman but dream forms. He seems to represent something unique and special, hard to pin down.

Given that this is just one of many blatant inconsistencies in the series, I think the answer is simply that they do not care at all about said consistency.

Amd your alternate universe theory is…?
Anyways I think ubi has decided on Rayman being the only members of the species, given there hasn’t been anyone else since the first game to have the trait.
More importantly amongst said members, we’ve never seen anyone else throw punches or have helicopter hair like Rayman does.

Literally where every rayman game is in an alternate universe, that’s why looks of it keep changing, and why there are so many inconsistencies. Kinda like the Zelda one

Anyways I think ubi has decided to not give a feck about the other characters and just made a bunch of Rayman look-alike fillers, err I mean characters as an excuse to change and manipulate the others, and in some cases the character becomes a completely different identity.
I take back what I said, I have now changed the quote to reflect my thoughts

As Humch said, consistency isn't something the creatives really care about. And as someone who really enjoys the background lore in the series, it is something that really did bother me, but I've long since stopped caring since it's not something I see them ever properly reconciling. The last attempt at trying to tie things together was Origins...which was spotty at best, and all that quickly got thrown out the window with Legends.
Since the games are tied to the concept of dreams, my in-universe explanation is that it's all down to the nature of dreams, they're inconsistent and change on a whim, and since the world is ultimately borne and tied to Bubble Dreamer/Polokus, its makeup and theming changes too.

I guess it would make sense for the entire Rayman series to just be part of a dream. Which would explain all the changes to Rayman’s world! Honestly makes me feel more accepting of how Legends (and Origins to a degree) turned out rather than bothered, so thanks for that.

I can't claim complete credit for the idea, it's one that I adapted from someone else (my brain is thinking Haruka but this is a long time ago so I can't say for certain).

I thought the fact it was a dream was just official lore?

Yes and no, there is the fact that the world was dreamt by Polokus and indeed the inhabitants there are all of his dreams, but I don't know if the idea that he can rewrite his dreams (or rather retcon) is a canonical fact. Though it's not too far a reach to assume I suppose.

Yes, that's the problem. If we accept the "ta gueule, c'est un rêve" hypothesis (as boombo put it), then the uncontrollability of his dreams explains the massive inconsistencies from game to game – he can't help it.
In the scrapped Rayman Origins script, Ales Mansay also saw this as a major problem, and that's why he wanted to get rid of the Bubble Dreamer altogether. I've spoken previously about how this may have been a dig by certain people on the development team at others who were dismayed at the way the consistency of the lore was being destroyed.

Because people want every game to be part of the same surreal world I guess; but it would explain a lot.
Honestly different universes, different dreams of Polokus the Bubble Dreamer, sure is an easy answer.
But I don't like an easy answer, I like a good answer, a COOL ANSWER!
& IT'S A WHOLE LOT COOLER TO THINK THAT THE MAGICIAN FROM ORIGINS IS A DIFFERENT CHARACTER & THAT ORIGINS IS SHORT FOR ORIGINS OF PANDEMONIUM & THAT THE BUBBLE DREAMER FROM ORIGINS IS A POLOKUS IMPOSTER & THAT ALL THE DIFFERENT DARK RAYMEN ARE ALL BROTHERS OF EACH OTHER & THE SONS OF MR. DARK RATHER THAN JUST CLONES & THEY HAVE A MOTHER WHO WAS HIDES IN THE LAND OF THE LIVID DEAD & TRIES TO GET HER SONS BACK FROM HIS EVIL CLUTCHES BECAUSE MR.DARK IS A "TOXIC MAN" & THE RAYPEOPLE ARE A SPECIES OF DRAGONS THAT HAVE WINGS COMING OUT OF THEIR HEADS SO RAYMAN'S HAIR IS ACTUALLY HIS PAIR OF WINGS & THE FILLIPOLILI OR WHATEVER THE HELL THEY'RE CALLED ARE A COVER UP OF THE WINGS TO KEEP UP SOME NARRATIVE OF HIM BEING UNIQUE OR SOMETHING!
& & & BETILLA & PIERRE THE MAGICIAN FROM THE FIRST GAME ARE RAYMAN'S PARENTS &
* gets rammed over by a flying pirate ship*
