...we'll all be dead. Repent!

[But seriously, how do you think the world will REALLY end? Will the suns death hit us first, or will some meteor strike wipe us out? Will we kill ourselves through war?]

The universe won’t end. I’m sure we’ll have figured something out by that point.

Why are you so sure of this?

Well I am certainly not sure of this. How far is the closest exo-planet we know ? And I don't think we'll be able to make a planet inhabitable.

There are three possibilities as far as the universe goes;
1. The universe will never stop expanding, thus making all contents stretch further and further away from each other.
2. The universe will at some point stop expanding, and stay one size.
3. The universe will at some point stop expanding, and start to retract, growing smaller and smaller until it *poofs* into non-existance.

If nothing happens to the Earth until the point our Sun grows into a red giant, the Earth, but not necessarily humans, will be engulfed by the expanding Sun.

Personally I think 2012 is a load of bull-shit. (Not to say that 2012 will never come, just to say that the "destruction" that is being "predicted" will not happen.)

But who really knows how our existence will end? I believe it will most likely be caused by us ourselves.

According to our current understanding of the Universe, space must either expand or contract, it can't be static. So while this is a logically conceivable possibility, it is not supported by physical evidence.

^ This

I am not sure how or when the world will end but it won't be sometime soon i'm sure, just because a movie says so.

There's a common belief out there that a solar flare with scorch the Earth out of existence, and personally I think this is one of the most retarded theories ever formulated by man. Why? I created a fairly close approximation of the distance of the Earth to the sun. Do you think a sun flame could possibly reach that? Yyyee... no:

(Click it to actually see the comparison, this is a rough approximation of the scale distance from the Earth to the Sun)

You see that small, hardly visible blue spec on the right? That's right, that's Earth. how the frick is a solar flare supposed to reach it exactly? Solar flares even have a hard time doubling the Sun's diameter.

There's another belief that a ninth planet known as Nibiru (or Planet X) will pass Earth closely in it's course during 2012, the gravity of Nibiru overthrowing that of Earth's and toppling it.

But this is a load of bull because we should have been able to see the planet with the naked eye at this point, if it was true.

Ahem.
Wikipedia wrote:The idea that a planet-sized object could collide with or pass by Earth in the near future is not supported by any scientific evidence and has been rejected as pseudoscience by astronomers and planetary scientists.

:)

So, now I will conclude everything that everyone's posted on this thread in a few sentences.

2012 will be like any other year, that's right. No apocalyptic earthquakes. No massive tsunamis washing over Australia. No meteorites/asteroids colliding with the Earth. No total destruction of the universe. Comprehendo? Good.

We have technology now that would have been unimaginable to most people even a few decades ago. If the rate of technological advancement continues to accelerate, I expect that all problems will eventually be solved. There are hundreds of billions of years left to figure these things out, and the ones doing the figuring may be far more intelligent than humans – the solutions will not necessarily be things that we could currently understand.

I saw that film; it’s called Melancholia and it’s a lot better than 2012.

This pretty much sums up my stance, including the second half of the post.

A solar flare? That sounds retarded indeed, but when the Sun dies and turns into a red giant all life on Earth will be impossible.

Well the Sun turns into a red giant before it dies, about 4/5 through its life cycle, but nonetheless, all life on Earth will be impossible, but that's in billions of years form now. Interestingly enough, I've read that Mars will become inhabitable for a few million years during the Sun's expansion stage.

The verb die does not only mean “cease to live” but also “pass gradually, fade or subside gradually”.

I'd be interested in reading that article.

I'm not sure humanity will still be there in hundreds of billions of years. I think we'll be extinct before we can even think of a solution to colonize other planets - unless we find a mass relay on Mars, which I highly doubt.

Same.
