non Raywiki Wiki editing/making

Post by EdgyRabbid »

This is a topic for non Raywiki wikipedias. I honestly made this thread because I'm having problems editing my own .

So like, how do y'all format the front pages of your wikis? Cuz honestly IDK how to do that myself :confus:

You're gonna have to learn about Wiki Mark-up

Honestly in general, your best bet is to look at the manuals on Wikipedia, it's the oldest Wiki site out there, they'll have a lot of documentation and examples to learn how to do things.

The best way to learn is by doing, so perhaps determine what you want to do and then have a look at Wikipedia's documentation to see how you can get to doing the specifics of what you want doing. For a front page, I suspect you'd want to layout your information in a table, so you can point to main articles you want to navigate to, alongside any other summary information about your Wiki you'd like to show.

You'll also want to learn about Wiki extensions, these add extra capabilities to your Wiki, so if you wanted to do fancier things then you've got the option to do so.

Oh I know Wikipedia basics, my main concern is the custom CSS on my front page. I wanna add a logo and a background image but I'm not sure...

That's going to require reading on styling, I know the default skin is called Vector, it might be worth doing some searching on MediaWiki-Vector and how styling it works. There's likely to be documentation on what you need to do to modify things like the logo and backgrounds.

Alright! Im still very new to this.

Another problem I have, do I lay out the basics of the pages first (make multiple pages) or make complete pages (IE full of info).. how do y'all write your wikis?

I've never really contributed to a Wiki from scratch so I can't really comment there, as a hypothetical I'd say probably determine the backbone (Pages, Categories, Main Articles and subpages etc.) first before trying to go all-in, but Wikis feel flexible enough that you could probably do it retroactively.
