We have 24 hours to live, or do we?

SOPA may - or may not - kick in within twenty-four hours. Post your wild voodoo predictions and philosophical inquires. What do you think will happen? I myself find it hard to say, considering many powerful companies such as EA, Nintendo, Sony, Disney and many more support this act, whereas the White House does not.

I honestly haven't been keeping up with SOPA, I know very little of it (so forgive me if I make a mistake in what I'm about to say) , but from what I do know, it's essentially doing what 20 other laws are already doing, although far too extreme, from what I've heard someone who posts a copyrighted image to a website without proper rights could serve up to 5 years in prisons. Which is just stupid, there wouldn't be enough space in prisons over the globe to hold every human being who has access to the internet.

Anyway, I honestly don't think it will kick in, basically *insert obvious "shall not pass" joke here*

I'm a bit worried about it. But well, it's probably not likely to pass. Tomorrow a lot of sites will be holding a blackout for 24 hours. Okay, one day is no disaster, but if SOPA passes, any of those sites could "black out" forever. And that's what worries me.

I'm also worried about my own freedom should some game company sue me for drawing as much as fanart. This counts for everyone who likes drawing fan art out here.

I heard someone could get 5 years jail for it.

Anyone fancy a trip to America(n jail)?

I don’t give a damn about SOPA either way. It gets on my nerves when people on the internet tell me to get indignant about things.

I find the SOPA blackout more irritating than SOPA itself.

Just let me get this straight: the rule could censor sites for the US citizens, but not for the rest of the world, right? Could they only censor it, or could they completely kill it off?

Either way it's no good - prison for fanart seems to be outrageous. Many people gain their skills from reproducing things that already exist. Should we jail people for drawing other people at the malls now, or for drawing a tree, because it's infringement of one's personality rights? Prison's a hard place and should be for true criminals, not for aspiring artists.

Here’s my mind-blowing prediction: nobody will go to prison for painting a tree, even if SOPA gets passed.

I honestly don't see how fan art is piracy, its FAN created art after all. Piracy, I understand, is when you illegally download music, Movies or videogames, so how is a fanmade drawing (which is actually promoting the companies Movie, game e.t.c.) ilegal? It just makes no sense.

Besides, even if SOPA is passed, I doubt anyone would get sued or go to jail if they draw fan art or even make fan games or fan movies, it would be up to the company to sue the creator of the fan art, and I don't think they would have time or money to sue millions of people.

A very strong point. Plus, if they were to start suing people for trivial things like this, their reputation would plummet down beyond the depths of the Cave of Bad Dreams.

Okay, that's a relief.

I'm still shaken by the thought so many good sites could just be shut down. Just like that.

So wait, it really means they can put a right end to a site? I thought it might just mean they could put an embargo on it, but this is far worse.

Forget the other wbesites, I can't even get around PC without having to refresh every page at least 10 times.
Is anyone else getting this problem?
It's not my internet, the other websites are working fine.

Nope, but then I don't live in the US - and neither do you...?
But I am experiencing some strange things with for example Hotmail, which reloads 50 times a second by itself. Also the snow on the RPC is lagging sometimes.

Not sure about hotmail.
Usually PC works fine and I can get around no problem, but its a pain at the moment.

I read on several articles that if SOPA passes, anyone that finds they have been infringed can tell them to block a site from getting any visitors, force sites such as Paypal to no longer fund the owner of the site with payments from users. And force search engines not to let the site show up in the search anymore.

I really don't know. It just sounds so wrong and unbelievable. I hope they are fake rumors. And even then I still hope SOPA won't pass.

Only two days ago some dutch Brein company litteraly told two dutch internet providers to block the Pirate Bay off entirely. So yeah, the dutch are already beginning to experience what it's gonna be like. I myself am just going to wait and see what happens to the site. And this is true...I've seen it on the news.

Breaking news: According to a journal entry by PurpleSerguei on DA (http://purpleserguei.deviantart.com/jou ... -279928799) because Obama didn't support it, SOPA has not passed, can't say for sure though, I'll wait and see until it appears in official news.
