As I said Lost world was meant to be an attempt to return to these roots but failed miserably, even though I still think it was enjoyable, Also Sonic the hedgehog 2006 relied mostly on the adventure titles's success.

Ehh, late to the party as usual. So while I'm kinda bummed by Sonic Mania's delay (I have a big enough backlog of games to play as it is, and I'm trying to game less to squeeze in other activities) I was pretty excited by the new info for Sonic Forces because as a fan of Sonic Generations and Sonic Unleashed it looks like we'll be getting a couple chunks of their gameplay for the Modern Sonic segments. Hearing Master mention 3 gameplay types really makes me hope for a dreamcast era Sonic to be here because holy fuck SA1 & 2 are my favorite design styles for 3d Sonic since they were open ended enough that exploration never felt too distracting from going too the goal fast and kept the game from more of a corridor you speed through like the more modern titles.

Anyways, Sonic Forces looks alright, my main issue being the same as everyone else, I'm a little upset to see them go the route of Boost gameplay again. Not that I didn't enjoy it, but I was really hoping for something drastically different.

Honestly I'm just glad for some consistency right now, even if I think the wisps are a pest that need to be terminated... :pfff:

Consistency is fine, but this is the 4th 'boost' title Sonic game we're getting, which seems a little overkill. I guess SEGA saw how poorly Lost World was received so they decided to take the more play it safe route. One day... I hope we can get an open world Sonic similar to the likes of the 3D Mario titles that encourage exploration. I'd imagine with the fast nature of the games it'd be a challenge, but it is totally possible to do something great with that.

Either way they talked about Sonic Forces having 3 gameplay styles.... I've always hated Sonic having 'multiple' game play styles as filler, but if they can manage to do something similar with Generations by keeping the speed with both classic and modern, then it doesn't feel filler-like at all. Although it makes you wonder what that 3rd gameplay style will be? Will it be dreamcast Sonic? I think it'd be pretty cool if they tried to reintroduce the tight controls of the action stages from Adventure 1 and 2 into the game. Please no Werehog, shooting, treasure hunting, or any of that stuff.

On another note, it's a little upsetting to see Mania get delayed, but if its to tidy up the game and make sure everything is in a workable state, well it shows SEGA is learning from their past mistakes. It'd be cool if we end up seeing more content than what would have been there before, but that's just hoping.

As much as I would like it I don't think we're getting the adventure gameplay style as the 3rd gameplay style, since the character is "new" and if it would have been dreamcast sonic it would be returning a old character, or adding a character based on another character, and this was said to be "A entirety new character".

The clipped they showed doesn't look very exciting to me, it's like you press a button to win. All that happens in there is Sonic goes fast and occasionally does a homing attack in a very linear path. Multiple gameplay styles signals to me that they're aware it's too repetitive to be stretched into an entire game, but Lost World and Boom probably did push them to settle on something played safely.

Well we can talk about the Wisp aspect of the game, since they did announce that not only the white Wisp (the one that fiils your boost gauge) is going to be returning to gameplay we're going to see more wisps, I personally don't mind the Wisps since they were very enjoyable to me in colors and were completely optional, but I know a lot of people didn't like their appearance in lost world, what do you think?

I am so over the Wisps man. Honestly they were so gimmicky in Sonic Colors that I was never bothered to actually finish the game, and I never really cared for their appearance in Generations even if they were inly in one act. I cant speak personally on Sonic Lost World as it looked to uninteresting to play, but it doesnt personally make me happy to hear of their return

While there's not much to go off, it seems they're there just for the boost mechanic. Though personally, I was ok with the rings charging the boost meter.

This is untrue, in an interview with Aarons webber said and I quote: "but its not going to be only speed wisps"

I am pretty happy that we'll need speed wisps in order to fill up the boost gauge though, you got so much boost from collecting rings and it made filling the boost gauge too easy and too overpowered for me enjoy using personally.

So we have the most Michael Bay-esque Sonic game with the most vapid hyper-trash-rock theme to date. Great to see Sonic Team really moving the series forward rather than falling back on their tails every single time the fans bitch about experimental and therefore naturally less-tested gameplay they try and incorporate now and then. I bet Forces, like Generations, is going to be met with critical acclaim and 8-10/10s across the board, and Lost World - a much more respectable game, in my opinion - will continue to fall even further into obscurity.

I mostly blame the fans for this. I got into a few conversations lately with some Sonic fans where my entire contribution was basically copy-pasting "i dont think it looks bad it looks fine its just not my thing" over and over, with hoards of people telling me how the game looks amazing and perfect that I'm judging it before even playing it (as if calling it amazing and perfect isn't doing the exact same thing).

God, what a shitty, needy, controlling fanbase. The side of it that's more invested in OCs, recolours and DeviantART is literally superior.

It's a very fair point. I guess they're playing it safe since this is an anniversary title, and they're worried about an 06 situation. But I do agree that they should be wary of playing it safe. I think the issue with 3D Sonic is that they've never really found a lasting and deep seated formula to tinker around. Series like Crash, Ratchet and so on had the convenience of being able to have some core elements established. And then experimentation was done around said formulae to create new, but still very familiar and (for want of a better word) identifiable gameplay experiences.

That being said, they did state that they're including a 3rd type of gameplay. Perhaps I'm just being a naive optimist, but I wonder if they decided to experiment but have it wrapped alongside a familiar package to appease fans.
