Good point. I still prefer the vibranteness of the old games to the realism in the new DKC games. Surrealism is a far better thing than realism, especially in Nintendo games like Donkey Kong.
I know the two are vastly different but I compare them because they're still part of the same series. Though I highly disagree when you say "brown and murky", I think the exact opposite. I'm not disregarding any opinions I'm just giving out my thoughts as to why I thought the old DKC games were far better.

When I say "brown and murky", I mostly refer to the original DKC more than DKC2 and DKC3 (which I really haven't got much experience with). Again, it's not a criticism - it was very much supposed to look like this. They wanted to make the original DKC look fairly realistic. That's why all of the environments are pretty grounded and not totally surreal, like a Mario or Kirby game. You've got a jungle, mines, factories, underwater caves, snow mountains...nothing that I'd call "out of this world".
The original DKC is brown and murky because that's how a lot of these locations would look in real life. Most notable example being the jungle setting. They still add some surrealistic charm to them though, such as the oddly shaped palm trees, or the enemy characters themselves.
In fact I think the newer DK games look much more colourful, like a Mario game or something. Though I have more reason to criticise that than I do the original DKC games - it's just pretty typical for Nintendo, and makes DK's platformers look a bit TOO much like a Mario game. Not to say that Tropical Freeze doesn't have it's really unique moments that I don't think you'd see in other Nintendo platformers (probably thanks to the fact that DK platformers are made by Western developers as opposed to the Japanese developers of Mario and Kirby games), but the fact that the original DKC games had that murky and somewhat realistic look made them stand out a bunch. I can't think of many 2D platformers, let alone Nintendo games, that had an art style as stand out as the original DKC games. I also liked how messy and unkempt everything looked compared to other platformers, really gave me the feeling of being in the wild (though the modern DKC games seem to have retained this aspect well enough, which is great).

I agree with this as well. The newer games are way more technically colorful, but more generic. It doesn't mean they're terrible, however, nor does darker mean the classic trilogy was bad. I think they're all good, but the newer ones not as much.

I don't see what's so mind-bogglingly awesome about freezing your homeland. If I freeze Peach's castle will that create some sort of new experience?
There's the difference. An Ice Castle? Yeah, haven't seen that before. *coughfrozenwasanoverratedfilmthatwassomediocre* The difference is the frozen island. Now that's an intriguing idea. A jungle covered in snow and frozen.
Rayfist wrote:It's a HELL of a lot better than a plank of wood.
Ehh, I feel the main Tikis had more distinct designs.
Rayfist wrote:It's a fucking Donkey Kong game. Are you seriously expecting a cohesive well detailed plot and reason for why the enemies want to rid of DK and friends? This isn't story complex like Rayman 2 or Final Fantasy, lol. That sounds nearly as ridiculous as wanting to know the full reason why Bowser captures Peach. Nobody cares about the itty bitty details for games like that.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! OKAY! This is the forum that was giving a ton of shit about Origins/Legends not having a story! Even if it's a fucking Donkey Kong Country game, it's still nice to have reasons to the plot. A game can be built up without a story and sometimes it's not even necessary. Comparing, the Snowmads wanting to expand their kingdom and King K. Rool wanting the Banana for the fuck of it, I think Tropical Freeze gives me a purpose to wanting to kick the ass of my foes. It gives motivation to the player.
Rayfist wrote:And I'm entirely sick of hearing people like you calling us out as "nostalgia fags" when the original DK Trilogy was FAR far superior. I've said it before, it's missing that special Rareware recipe that Nintendo can't match. It's no different than the reasons why majority of us on the community like a lot of the older Rayman games better then the news ones. And before you go out calling me for nostalgia, that is actually far from the truth. I actually vastly preferred the Mario 64 DS remake over the original N64 one as well as Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D. That has nothing to do with nostalgia. I never grew up with Donkey Kong Country 3 and even playing that after beating DK Country Tropical Freeze was a MUCH better experience.
I'm not calling anyone here a nostalgia fag! I was referring to the idiots on Youtube who just go into the videos to talk shit and give no concrete reason to criticize the new games! Nostalgia is nice, I'm not saying it's a bad thing. But if the people who let it take over them, then they become the problem. DISCLAIMER: Not calling anyone here a nostalgia fag. Remembering stuff from the past does not determine one's sexuality.
Rayfist wrote:Why do you just jump to the conclusion that this has to do with nostalgia? A good example of nostalgia fags are those who prefer Pokemon Blue/Red/Yellow over Firered and Leafgreen. This has nothing to do with nostalgia. Even taking off the nostalgia glasses I have a far better experience. It lacks the Rareware feel, it isn't the same. There are no massively bright lights to accompany the specific area I'm in.
In no way did I try to include nostalgia! I made sure to not have include nostalgia to this heated debate! I just wanted to say that the new installments have really improved the series!
Rayfist wrote:You remind me of someone who I argued with over Facebook who complained that Crash: Wrath Of Cortex was a bad game because they didn't do anything new. Here's the kicker: You can still do something new while keeping the old formula. People say that Crash of The Titans was a good game because it did something new, I call bullshit, it did something new in a far too vastly drastic way that made it so majority of us at the time weren't even able to recognize that it was a Crash game. Hell, I didn't even grow up with a Super Nintendo as I had a SEGA Genesis, yet I felt the SNES had a stronger library, that has nothing to do with nostalgia.
There you said it! Returns & Tropical Freeze keep the old formula of the Original DKC games and added a lot of new things! Tropical Freeze also made the game harder than previous titles, which they handled really good! And yes something new isn't always good. Just look at DK64. That's an example. Again, I'm trying to get nostalgia involved with this.
Rayfist wrote:Just because we prefer an older game over a newer does not mean we are nostalgia fags. They are two different companies with two different styles. That's the end of it.
Again, I am not referring anyone here a nostalgia fag. I just feel that Retro has handled the series fantastically and the recent games definitely show that in many great ways. Also, aren't previous members of Rareware now working at Retro?

Frozen was indeed overrated but it's by no means mediocre, but that's besides the point. Yeah it was cool to revisit the jungle while it was frozen but I think that's a huge waste of potential for a final level.

You nailed it, seriously. The main problem I have with the new DKC games is that it feels far too much like Mario.
Bradandez wrote:OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! OKAY! This is the forum that was giving a ton of shit about Origins/Legends not having a story!
I loved both Origins and Legends but I don't see what's wrong with majority of us wanting to see something similar as Rayman 2? I mean yeah Origins and Legends are different and a bit of a nice break from the well done story of Rayman 2 but I really would like to see a Rayman game attempt this type of thing again. (Hence what Adsolution is doing with ROTD)
Bradandez wrote:Comparing, the Snowmads wanting to expand their kingdom and King K. Rool wanting the Banana for the fuck of it, I think Tropical Freeze gives me a purpose to wanting to kick the ass of my foes. It gives motivation to the player.
Bowser capturing the princess is enough motivation for me. Like I said, it's a Donkey Kong game, you really don't need a cohesive plot. Should I play Pac-man to highly invest myself in the story? The ghosts gave me a reason to be pissed off.
Bradandez wrote:There you said it! Returns & Tropical Freeze keep the old formula of the Original DKC games and added a lot of new things! Uh.... what. Just because I liked Wrath Of Cortex does not mean I don't prefer the older Crash games. And I'm reminding you that in no way am I saying Tropical Freeze/Returns are bad games, just in comparison to the older DK games. Simply because new things are added doesn't mean it's better. You've still got two completely different games with two different art styles.

You weren't saying it directly, but you sure as hell were implying it. I even mentioned earlier, I know you weren't calling me a nostalgiafag though.
Bradandez wrote:Also, aren't previous members of Rareware now working at Retro?
No, a lot of the Rare staff that made Rareware so good are gone. But I think Retro is as close to the new Rareware as we got. Rare is pretty shitty right now with there current where-a-bouts.
Anyways sorry if I don't reply anytime soon as I start community college first day in a few hours...

Let's keep this an insult free debate though if we are to keep going.

I've actually wanted to get into the Monster Hunter series for the longest time, so I'll likely get a physical copy at one point.

Wii U version will be superior in every way so I am gonna get that one first and will get 3DS version when I find it cheaper.
Won't be able to get Wii U version day one sadly due to location where I live and will probably be foreced to wait on eBay too, but I will aim to get it from some store on eBay that is selling it sealed and not individual who sells used.

I might actually be getting Smash Bros 3DS (and lots of other games in the future) before street date, since I have a friend who can sort me out. Either way, I'm getting it ASAP, same with the Wii U version.

I'll prefer to wait some time. Maybe I can catch up the game a little cheaper in some months. I could have money for it now but I already pre-ordered the Rayman book ^^', it was a priority.

Might have to skip out on day 1 of Bayonetta 2, which is a shame because the game looks so fucking awesome but there are other Nintendo games higher on my priorities to get launch day, Smash Bros 3DS and Wii U, Pokemon Omega Ruby, if I'm really lucky I MAY be able to get Bayonetta 2. This is only if the "November" rumor for Smash is true, which I'm fairly certain it is.

This is the problem when too many games come out almost at the same time: we need to define priorities. My current priority is Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, sadly the two SSB games will have to wait. It is a shame because both versions look much better than Brawl.
