Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc is the sequel to Rayman 2: The Great Escape. It was released starting on the 3rd of March 2003 for the Sony PlayStation 2, Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Nokia N-GAGE, PC, and Mac. Rayman 3 was 3D, with graphics similar to Rayman 2: Revolution. However, Rayman 3s levels were a series of "action stages" as opposed to having a single level per world (as were most of Rayman 2's). Also unlike Rayman 2 and especially Revolution, the levels strictly followed a "movie"-like plot; in other words, returning to a level meant returning to a point in the adventure (such as Rayman falling in Begoniax's outhouse) instead of returning to a location in the adventure. Rayman 3 also featured a scoring system, and players could post their final scores on the then-new RaymanZone website.

Worlds
Similar to the gap between Rayman and Rayman 2, all locations in Rayman 3 were new and unconnected to previous games. However, they are still the same environments as Rayman's games tend to stick with: the mountains, forests, and swamps from Rayman, and the plains, coasts, and fortresses from Rayman 2. One area in particular, the Fairy Council, was alluded to in Rayman 2, and Count Razoff's father supposedly shot something as large as Space Mama; these allusions make Rayman 3s locations generally regarded as still being in the same canon as Rayman and especially Rayman 2.

Rayman 3s worlds in particular picked up on a lot of things Rayman 2 and Revolution lacked: unique environments. While the Iron Mountains and the Menhir Hills pretty much looked the same, Rayman 3 's worlds were vast and varied. Many elements from Revolution were included in Rayman 3 's worlds--the most evident of these are the ambient sounds (for example, the Desert of the Knaaren has the same ambience as Beneath the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava) and the unique lighting. Rayman 3 also had many instances of stained glass windows, also a previous characteristic of the Lava Sanctuary.

Rayman 3 returned to the fairy tale-like theme of Rayman 's locations, though not as surreal. Many odd locales dot Rayman 3 's small collection of worlds, such as in the Fairy Council and the Longest Shortcut.

Finally, Rayman 3 included many allusions to its two predecessors, including a statue of Ly the Fairy (who is oddly absent from the Fairy Council), and an appearently "frozen" state of Admiral Razorbeard and his Robo-Pirate Army.

Plot
When Andre is firghtened so much he turns into a Dark Lum, he transforms a lot of the other Red Lums into Dark Lums too. The Dark Lums steal the fur from other animals and use it to weave costumes for themselves, becoming 'Hoodlums'. When Andre, dressed up in a Hoodlum costume, starts heading towards Rayman, Globox and Murfy, the latter two desperately try to wake Rayman up. Globox eventually becomes so frightened he accidently pulls off Rayman's hand and runs off with them. Murfy picks up Rayman by the hair and flies off with him, waking him up. More Hoodlums try to shoot down Murfy and Rayman as they fly away, but they both escape. They then begin searching for Globox and Rayman's hands.

However, when, they find Globox and Rayman gets his hands back, Andre, along with two slapdashes, pursue the large toad. Rayman and Murfy go following him into the building of the Fairy Council. Rayman soon defeats Andre's Hoodlum costume, which drops a Laser-Washing-Detergeant Can behind, and Andre flees towards theHeart of the World, wanting to gain ower from there. After Rayman tries out the Laser-Washing Detergeant, called 'combat fatigues', he and Murfy pursure Andre to stop him from getting to his destination. They find Globox along the way, who accidentally swallows the Dark Lum Lord.

Score System
Rayman 3 was the second game to have a score system (after Rayman 2: Revolution), and the first for the score system to be in an arcade-style format. This score system allowed players to upload their scores onto RaymanZone's Lums Quest. The score system increased the replay value of Rayman 3. The scoring system followed this formula:
#Collect a Jewel / Break a Piggy Bank / Defeat a Hoodlum
#Points are added to Score
#Combo Mode starts
#During Combo Mode, step 1 brings double points to step 2
#Unless step 1 is carried out consistently, Combo Mode shortly ends

If Rayman is using a Laser-Washing Powder Can, each point is doubled, increasing the amount of points he can get and quadrupling the payoff of Combo Mode.

With the reformat of RaymanZone for Rayman Raving Rabbids, the Lums Quest ended.

Main characters
The Good Guys
*Rayman - The hero and protagonist of the game
*Globox - Rayman's best friend and Uglette's husband
*Murfy - Serves as an "instructor"-type character
*The Teensies - Keepers of the Hall of Doors

The Bad Guys
*André - is the main antagonist of the game
*The Hoodlums - André's army

The complete list can be seen here: http://www.raymanpc.com/wiki/en/Category:Characters_from_Rayman_3

Levels
* The Fairy Council
* Clearleaf Forest
* The Bog of Murk
* The Land of the Livid Dead
* The Desert of the Knaaren
* The Longest Shortcut
* The Summit Beyond the Clouds
* Hoodlum Headquarters
* The Tower of the Leptys

Trivia
* The manual that Murfy has in the beginning of the game has a picture of Rayman's head from the original Rayman game on the cover.
* Throughout the game, there are sharp posts that you can stick plums on top of to gain access to higher areas. On these posts are pictures of a Livingstones from the original Rayman game.
* The Fairy Council and the Heart of the World were first mentioned in Rayman 2: The Great Escape, and only now make an appearance in Rayman 3.
* Sometimes, when you start hitting Globox, he says 'You were nicer in Rayman 2!', referring to Rayman's sudden change of personality in this game.
* There are lots of secret rooms in the game, but three of them refer to Rayman 2. One, located in the Longest Shortcut, has a statue of Ly in it. another, in the Hoodlum Headquarters, has statues of Razorbeard and some of his Robo-Pirates sitting at a table, in the style of 'The Last Supper' painting by Leonardo da Vinci. Also, in Razoff's mansion, one of the many statues is of a snake similar-looking to Sssssam the Snake.
* At the beginning of the third part of the Fairy Council, when Rayman and Murfy are looking for Andre and Globox, Murfy tells Rayman to hurry or else 'he'll start telling everyone he's your father!'. This is a reference to the well-known scene from the extremely successful movie, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes back, when Darth Vader tells Luke Skywalker that he is his father.
* In the Fairy Council, when Rayman and Murfy pursue Andre, the Dark Lum Lord throws a Ludiv away from her home, saying Zelda needs her, before hiding in the Ludiv's home. Zelda is a major character from the successful video game series 'The Legend of Zelda'.
* In the Bog of Murk, inside Razoff's house is a room with a large mirror. If Rayman is left in idle in front of it, he'll make a face at himself and notice he has something stuck in his teeth, pulling it out.

See Also
*Rayman 3, the handheld-version of Rayman 3, which has a different story line and gameplay.
*Rayman: Hoodlums' Revenge, the spin-off sequel of Rayman 3.
Dressed in a red and gold outfit, he sports a shotgun which shoots arrows at any intruders that dares to enter his mansion. He is a hunter, and throughout the mansion there are taxidermies of all of the animals that he had hunted. He has a bust of Sssam in his mansion; whether Razoff has killed him or not remains to be seen.

Biography
Count Razoff is the son of Count Zaroff, and the grandson of Nimrod and Artemis. He claims to hold the chair of Cynegenics at the University of Tyr-Kainkou.

All of Razoff's family's names are references to hunting. A hunter named General Zaroff appears in the short story, The Most Dangerous Game, the plot of which bears some resemblance to Rayman's encounter with Razoff in the Bog of Murk. In the Old Testament, Nimrod, who was said to be responsible for the construction of the Tower of Babel, is referred to as "a mighty hunter before the Lord". And in Greek mythology, Artemis was the goddess of hunting (it is, however, unknown if this reference to a goddess is of any real significance or connection to other deities of the Glade of Dreams such as Polokus).

Count Razoff's Mansion
Razoff's Mansion is located into the The Bog of Murk. It is very large and classical Mansion with many statues (for example a statue of Sssssam). There are also a few creatures captured into his mansion, if you liberate those beings they'll give you red lums.
Relations to other characters
Begoniax - Begoniax seems to have a crush on him for unexplained reasons.

Globox - Razoff once tried to kill Globox, who ended up in the mansion by mistake, after the Teensie Highway was broken.

Rayman - Razoff tried to kill Rayman after he came into Razoff's castle attempting to save Globox.

The Hoodlums - The Hoodlums are Razoff's enemies too. When Globox ended up in the mansion, André ended there too, which means that Razoff actually held André captured, and the Hoodlums were trying to get him back. In the Rayman 3 minigame, Commando, the player controls Razoff as he fends off trespassing Hoodlums. In another minigame, Razoff Circus, the player controls him to shoot targets at pictures of enemies such as Rayman and Globox, and the Hoodlums.

"Rayman 2" redirects here. For other uses, see Rayman 2 (disambiguation).

Rayman 2: The Great Escape is the second major game in the Rayman series, and is the sequel to Rayman. It was first released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64 and was followed by ports for the Sega Dreamcast, PC, and Sony PlayStation, with each port being different in its own way perhaps due to the specifications of each console. It was also the first 3D game of the series, and introduced many brand new major characters, though featured almost none from its predecessor. Rayman 2: The Great Escape is often abbreviated as Rayman 2 or (to avoid confusion with the similarly named Rayman 2: Revolution) R2.

Early production
Very recently, it was revealed that Rayman 2 was first developed to be a 2D platforming game in the same vein as Rayman, for the Sony PlayStation and the Sega Saturn . Screenshots and videos suggested that the game was still going to be about a robot invasion as it featured enemies similar to the Robo-Pirates, and it also featured background platforming - using a device similar to a shower head and a toilet flush, Rayman could teleport from the foreground to the background. One video in particular also featured a female character with red hair that appears to be Betilla the Fairy, but could also be Betina in a cameo.

The whole of this game was cancelled in favour of the 3D version it became, though a playable prototype (version 01.12d) featuring one level is included in the PlayStation version of Rayman 2, and unlocked if the player collects at least 720 Yellow Lums out of 800. It was recently discovered that this prototype was finished on May 31st 1996 and was sent to the Playstation RayMan 2 team for review.

Gameplay
The gameplay in Rayman 2 is somewhat similar to that of Rayman, though this time Rayman starts with a few powers to defend himself, one of which is given to him by Globox who is introduced at the very beginning. The aim of the game is to rescue all of the Yellow Lums that have been scattered following the explosion of the Primordial Core, and the creatures that have been imprisoned in cages, while defeating any Robo-Pirates that stand in Rayman's way.

Main Characters
The Good Guys
*Rayman - The hero and protagonist of the game
*Globox - Rayman's best friend and Uglette's husband
*Ly the Fairy - Rayman's friend and powerful ally
*Murfy - Serves as an "instructor"-type character
*The Teensies - Keepers of the Hall of Doors
*Clark - A friend of Rayman's

The Bad Guys
*Admiral Razorbeard - The villain of the game
*Robo-Pirate Army - Razorbeard's army

Environment
Unlike Rayman, Rayman 2 is not divided into certain themed worlds, but rather a trail of 20 different locations, none of which are as surreal as its predecessor's, but are still dissimilar to the real world. The levels are played in a linear fashion in a World Map known as the Hall of Doors (Isle of Doors in the Dreamcast version), with most levels following a single path (though the Cave of Bad Dreams, Walk of Life, and Walk of Power are on side-paths). The player is able to backtrack to past levels if he or she wishes, and can move on to the final stage without breaking all of the cages.
Hack
It is possible to run the game under higher resolutions than 1024x768 by a simple hack.
By editing the file C:\WINDOWS\UbiSoft\ubi.in with a basic text editor, you'll have something like this

[SYSTEM]
Test Sound=1
3DFX=0
Memory=511
Windows colors=34
GLI_Dll=DirectX6
GLI_Driver=display
GLI_Device=Direct3D HAL
GLI_Mode=1 - 1024 x 768 x 16
ShortCutDesktopName=C:\Documents and Settings\Administrateur\Bureau\Jouer à Rayman 2
ShortCutDirectory=C:\Documents and Settings\Administrateur\Menu Démarrer\Programmes\Ubi Soft Games\Rayman 2
Language=French
Configuration=2

[OSD]
Valid=TRUE

The GLI_Mode line defines the resolution of the game. You'll just have to replace "1024 x 768" by "1440 x 900" to run the game in 1440x900 instead of the default 1024x768.

Caution: Modifying the other values may crash the game.

Promotion
UbiSoft promoted Rayman 2 with many toys and even a cartoon. There were YoYos, cell phone covers, a PlayStation 2 remote, a version of the game with a figure, and Happy Meal toys.

Cartoon
Main Article: Rayman: The Animated Series

McDonald's
UbiSoft joined with McDonald's to make a happy meal with Rayman toys. These toys were a Rayman rolling on a walking shell, Rayman on a plum with spinning helicopter hair, a lighting up cage, a sound making Henchman 800, a wobbling Globox and Ly.

Tonic Trouble
Characters from each game made cameo appearances in the other game. In Tonic Trouble, Rayman would be seen during the game's end credits. In Rayman 2, a salesman who previously appeared in the intro sequence of the PC version of Tonic Trouble sells the Grolgoth to Razorbeard late in the game. Tonic Trouble was worked on (though not developed) by Michel Ancel, used the Rayman 2 engine, originally appeared on the same platforms as Rayman 2, and was also released by Ubisoft, giving reason for the crossovers, though Tonic Trouble had not fared well critically or commercially, whereas Rayman 2 became successful in both areas.

Remakes
*Rayman 2: Revolution - PlayStation 2 remake that was essentially a slightly more difficult version of the original, with added levels, enemies, and a new free-roaming feature.
*Rayman DS - DS remake identical to the original N64 version, though many glitches and bugs were included that were not present in the original.

Trivia
* In the German gaming magazine PC Player (issue 01/2000) Rayman 2: The Great Escape was named as "Best Platformer in 1999".

* The PSX release of Rayman 2 originally came with a digital watch.

* In Japan, purple is the colour of death. Because of that, some characters with purple in them were changed. Rayman's body was made blue, Sssssam the snake turned into a kind of green, and Jano's hat was turned red. But the most bizarre change was made to Ly, who's body was changed from orange/purple to white/pink.

* The names of a few characters changed during design of the game.

The original name of Globox was Globber.
The original name of Razorbeard was Razorface.
The original name of the Teensies was Smalbeings.
The original name of Polokus was Polochus.
And the robo-pirates were originally named the Mysterious Guild.
