Menezis is a minigame from the Nintendo 64, PC and Dreamcast versions of Rayman 2. It is a basic space shooter where flying letters and numbers must be shot.

Accessing Menezis
Nintendo 64
In the Nintendo 64 version Menezis can be accessed by holding C-Left and entering the following sequence:

B, A, B, B, A, A, B, B, B, A, A, A.

To access the secret "Personal Thanks" section in the credits, enter the following sequence without holding any other buttons:

A, B, B, A, A, A, B, B, B, B, A, A

PC
In the PC version Menezis is accessed by the player waiting at the end screen of the game's credits until it appears or by typing "SHOOTEMUP" during the credits, followed by pressing enter.

Dreamcast
In the Dreamcast version Menezis is available as a downloadable bonus.

Description
The player controls a flying ‘E’ that may shoot commas by pressing the shoot button (the space bar).
The E can defend itself from enemy fire by pressing the jump button (the ‘A’ key on PC). Doing this causes the ‘E’ to grow in size, absorbing enemy bullets (full stops) without taking damage. The player can only do this if they have enough exclamation marks in the bottom-right corner of the screen, as defending themselves cost one ‘!’. Additional ‘!’s can be earned by colliding with them when they appear on the playing field.

The ‘E’ can only take three hits before the game is over. The player earns an additional life with every 100 points gained. Lives are shown in the top-left corner of the screen.

Enemies
There are three kinds of enemies in this game:
*The letter ‘X’: these come in two types: a type which flies by and shoots bullets and a type which tries to ‘kamikaze’ into the player's ‘E’ while shooting bullets.
*The letter ‘O’: these fire bullets in all directions, creating a spiral shape of bullets which the player's ‘E’ must avoid. These crawl by very slowly.
*The number ‘8’: these reside at the far-left side of the screen while periodically shooting large amounts of bullets in a certain direction.

See also
* Ray-Type Challenge, a minigame exclusive to Rayman Revolution, draws inspiration from Menezis.

Rayman is the main protagonist of the video game series of the same name. Rayman was originally created in the early 1990s by French video game developer Michel Ancel. The character made his debut in the original Rayman game, published by Ubisoft in 1995. With his trademark lack of limbs and helicopter hair, Rayman has become a popular and recognisable video game character, and the series has continued to grow and develop across numerous platforms up to the present day.

Description
Appearance
Rayman was originally designed to simply be an athletic character with a full body, but because of complications rendering on game consoles, he was left without arms, legs and a neck – his hands, feet and head float around his body. The manual of Rayman Origins gives out a new explanation for Rayman's limblessness: the lack of Lums had the consequence of preventing the creation of his limbs. He has a huge round nose, and strawberry-blonde hair which he divides into two fronds (three in the original game). He has the ability to use his hair as a helicopter, which lets him glide across large spaces and make soft landings. His eyes are dark blue in colour, though in most official artwork they are coloured black; two pictures in the original game showed him with lighter blue eyes. While Rayman is unique in most of the games, other members of his unknown species are seen in the original game, notably the Magician, Tarayzan, the Musician and the Musician's wife and child.

Rayman is almost always seen in white gloves and a purple torso with a mysterious white ring on the chest, through which he gains new powers from Betilla the Fairy. The symbol can also absorb the Silver Lums created by the fairies, and magically open the pillars containing the Four Masks of Polokus in Rayman 2. Up until Rayman 3, he wore a red neckerchief, which was then replaced with a red hood. He also wears shoes that are typically yellow and white, though the actual designs have changed throughout the series. Rayman Raving Rabbids is where he is seen wearing different clothing that has raised a few questions about his ‘limblessness’, as he sometimes looks as if he has knees, such as the disco costume with its trousers/pants. In Rayman Origins, his Rayman 3 attire was used, but his hood and shoes are a little different. In Rayman Adventures, he wears a new attire. He wears a red bandanna around his hair, a sleeveless brown coat unbuttoned around the bottom alongside his red hood, revealing a white shirt, and has a brown belt around his waist with a gold buckle. His gloves are now brown and fingerless, and his shoes are the same kind Assassin Ray wears.

Abilities
Rayman is very athletic and shows great gymnastic skills, especially since being given the power to run in the original game, and from Rayman 2 onwards. He is able to scale wall sides, kick enemies and do monkey bars, and some of his gymnastic skills include handstands, somersaults and back flips. Rayman is also strong enough to carry things such as baby Globoxes, Magic Spheres, plums and kegs. He can run while carrying an object in Rayman Revolution if he purchases an optional upgrade at the Magic Well.

Because of his limbless nature, Rayman has the ability, known as the telescopic fist, to shoot his fists as a projectile. The power and range of his punches can be increased by charging them. Rayman can also do this with his feet and throw his torso downwards with the bodyshot. His body parts appear to be sentient, since his fists can move and think on their own, as shown in the endings of Rayman 2, where his shoe gravitates towards him, and Rayman 3, where his hands wander off to scare a red Lum.

One of his most iconic powers is his helicopter hair which allows him to glide short distances. Although he cannot fly on his own, Rayman can ascend upwards if he glides on an air current. A temporary upgrade called the Super Helicopter allows Rayman to fly indefinitely for an entire level.

Rayman has magic abilities as well. He can shoot orbs of energy out of his hands with the magic fist, and similarily to his regular fist, it can be charged to increase the power output. By hitting a purple Lum with either his magic fist or telescopic fist, he can create a tether of energy with his grappling fist. In the DS version of Rayman Raving Rabbids, while Rayman does not have access to the magic fist, he can shoot yellow Lums as an attack after collecting them.

Rayman begins as a very poor swimmer; in the original game, he loses a life the instant he falls into any body of liquid. By the time of Rayman 2, he has developed this new skill – although all he can do in this game is a simple dog-paddle. In Rayman Revolution, he is taught to swim by Murfy and a baby Globox at the beginning of the game. In Rayman 3, he is a far more capable swimmer; he can now use his helicopter hair to propel himself through the water, he can perform athletic underwater backflips, and he no longer seems to require any Blue Lums or air bubbles to breathe beneath the surface. In both Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends, he can swim without needing any air like in Rayman 2, and without use of his helicopter hair like in Rayman 3.

Personality
Rayman's true personality is not explored deeply in the series, though most of the time he is a cheerful character with a good sense of humour. He is also very helpful, and is willing to take on whatever challenges face him for the sake of the safety and harmony of his world. Sometimes he can be a little childish, especially in the original game, as he often pulls grimaces as a form of defence. According to the now defunct Rayman's World website, he is brave, funny and also highly close to nature. In one interview, developer Natalie Paccard discusses the development of Rayman's personality between the two games: 'the original Rayman was a platform game, Rayman 2 is an action game. The universe has also evolved a lot, and so has the character. Rayman 2 is a bit older, able to do more things, and loves a good fight. He is less childish. The game itself includes more action and more tricks.’ In later games, Rayman becomes somewhat self-absorbed, especially in Rayman Raving Rabbids, as the Rabbids start to treat him like a celebrity during his captivity, though he is seen remembering and worrying about the baby Globoxes that he left behind. That however seems to be put behind him as the Rabbids continue to harass him in Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party. It is revealed through interviews with Michel Ancel that Rayman was meant to be a bit of a show-off who does not take himself too seriously. This aspect of the character was supposedly overlooked during Rayman 2 because of Ubisoft's focus on the environments of the game. It was in Rayman 3 that Ubisoft tried to show Rayman's true personality, giving him an updated look to match his newfound attitude and charisma. A Rayman 3 press release stated that ‘Like his core gaming audience, Rayman as a character has matured and now has a wilder edge, only hinted at in the earlier games.’

However, in Rayman Origins, Rayman seems to have recovered part of his childish personality; he bears a more joyful, careless and impulsive attitude, though he keeps the heroic spirit that characterized him in previous games. Rayman appears to enjoy a good joke, as the description of Raybox states he painted his skin with the help of Voodoo Mama to prank Globox. While the trailers and other commercial media described him as a "New Crazy", Michel Ancel explains Rayman and Globox's personality: 'They're the kind of characters who look... stupid, really, but they're not stupid, just simple. And all they really want to do is just focus on doing their job, no matter what.' When Rayman Origins was still developed as a prequel, the newborn Rayman was intended to bear a more immature, confused and unintelligent personality, blowing Betilla's skirt with his propeller hair and annoying the magic people; the game was initially focused on Rayman and Globox's personalities and how they evolved over time to become the heroes of the Glade of Dreams; the concept was changed when the game became a sequel.

In Rayman Legends, he is seen with a mostly unchanged personality from Rayman Origins, although it is presented in a more serious tone.

Rayman also appears to like several sports, such as basketball. In Rayman 2 he will sometimes take his body off and play with it like a basketball whenever he is left idle. Also, in the Game Boy Advance version of Rayman 3, if the player decides to continue at the "Game Over" screen, Rayman will throw his body through a basketball net and catch it. In Rayman 3, he seems to also show interest in football, as when he is left idle, he kicks his body around and can also kick turtles and plums. Other sports that Rayman appears to like are golf, bowling and karting, as Rayman Golf, Rayman Bowling and Rayman Kart suggest. One of Rayman's hobbies is painting, which was revealed at a later point in the original game and in Rayman Junior.
History
Rayman is the creation of French video game developer Michel Ancel, who was born in 1972. Around 1980, the eight-year-old Ancel began playing video games. Five years later, he began to create his own simple logic games, featuring characters that he invented himself. He often sketched character concepts on table corners, and around 1992, he came up with his favourite character so far: Rayman. Ancel left Rayman without any arms, legs or neck, making the character very easy to animate, as well as opening up unique gameplay possibilities, such as the telescopic fist. Ancel worked as a graphic artist and programmer on a string of Lankhor and Ubi Soft games in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1992, he and a small team of developers began production on a Super Nintendo game starring his Rayman character. Eventually it was decided to scrap this project, and rework it into an Atari Jaguar game, which was eventually released in 1995. By the end of the game's development cycle, the team had grown to contain dozens of members.

Inspiration
A number of interviews with Ubisoft developers were posted on official websites in the period leading up to the release of Rayman 2. In one interview, Rayman creator Michel Ancel revealed the inspirations behind the character. He states Rayman 2 was inspired by Russian, Chinese and Celtic stories that he read as a child. These elements form the ‘fantastic background’ which comprises the Glade of Dreams, but ‘a more contemporary and cartoonish touch’ has been added. Ancel goes on to say that the concept of the game's world is similar to that of The Dark Crystal, which shares ‘its magic and its Celtic universe’. The cartoonish aspects were inspired by the works of Tex Avery. Ancel states that ‘Rayman is a true high-performance hero who keeps a good sense of humour like Indiana Jones. Rayman is a rebel, fighting against mighty bad guys like in Star Wars or Robin Hood’. This suggests that the villains of Ancel's Rayman games – Mr Dark and Admiral Razorbeard – may have been inspired by the likes of Darth Vader and the Sheriff of Nottingham. The character of Indiana Jones is also referenced by Rayman's co-creator Frédéric Houde and the original game co-designer Serge Hascoët. According to a 2011 interview with the director of the Pix'n Love magazine (which has published numerous Rayman-related articles), Ancel took the name ‘Rayman’ from the ray-tracing software which Ubisoft happened to be using during the development of the original game.

Rayman's origins
Several conflicting accounts have been given for Rayman's origins. During the development of the original game, the developers considered a story in which a ten-year-old boy named Jimmy created a world called Hereitscool inside his computer, and became Rayman once he was sucked into it. This idea was quickly abandoned. When the original game was released in 1995, Rayman's backstory was left ambiguous, although he already appears to be an established hero within his world by the beginning of the game. The manual states that he is "the guardian of this world". The manual of Rayman 2 does however contain a different account of Rayman's origins. It tells of Rayman's first appearance in the Glade of Dreams, sometime before the events of the original game. In this version of the story, he is discovered by fishermen, who for some reason does not seem to have encountered his species before.

clear

A revised origin story for Rayman was revealed at the E3 expo of 2010, when Ubisoft showed a trailer for the upcoming game Rayman Origins. The trailer showed the creation of Rayman by Betilla the Fairy. At this point in its development, Rayman Origins was intended as a two-player episodic downloadable prequel to the series, but it was eventually retooled into a four-player sequel with a retail release. A final, slightly modified version of Rayman's origin story was eventually offered on the official Rayman Origins website in November 2011, and can also be found in the game's manual.

Unfortunately, although not surprisingly, our bedazzling and bodacious nymphs were distracted by some zombie chickens on their way to Bubble Dreamer's sacred snoring grounds, and they lost a sack of lums chasing the crazy creatures over a cliff. Thus, they arrived late and with a lot less illumination.

In the end, Rayman was born with a few fewer limbs, which as it turned out, made him a whole lot more limber!

It is not specified whether this story is intended to replace or complement the one from the Rayman 2 manual. It also conflicts with Rayman 2, where Rayman and Jano do not appear to have met before, and it does not explain the existence of Tarayzan, for example.

The PlayStation Vita version of the game contains two mosaics which can be viewed when the player collects enough relics. One of these mosaics tells a story about Rayman's past. Long ago, Rayman was completely bald, and had a wife or girlfriend of his own species. One night, as they slept together in a forest, a colony of tiny blonde hair creatures, named Mini-Villi, crept up on Rayman and fused themselves into his head. Rayman's female companion, frightened by this strange turn of events, attempted to cut Rayman's hair with a pair of scissors. The terrified hairs pulled at Rayman's head, forcing him to flee, and he fell over the edge of a cliff, apparently to his doom; however, he was saved by his new hair, which gave him the ability to fly like a helicopter.

Since the backstory conflicts with other stories of Rayman's origin (including the fact that Betilla gave Rayman his iconic ability to fly with his hair), it is unclear if it is true and whether Raynette ever existed.
Rayman makes his first appearance in the original game where he at the start can be seen sleeping in a hammock. He answers the Magician, who asks him to rescue the Electoons, with a simple "No problem". He can then directly afterwards be seen in the Dream Forest on the map, through the eyes of Mr Dark who is watching him as he makes his way closer to his hideout in Candy Château. In the manual he is referred to as "the guardian of this world". Throughout the game he will come across several other characters of his species, such as Tarayzan and the Musician. Each time after having defeated a boss he will perform a victory dance. The only exception is after having defeated Bzzit, where he comes up and befriends him instead once he sees him crying.

In the final level, Mr Dark's Dare, Mr Dark can be seen summoning Bad Rayman, an evil clone who follows Rayman's every step. It is unknown if this is simply a creation by Mr Dark, or an actual living creature of Rayman's species.
In Rayman 2, Rayman is seen imprisoned on the Buccaneer during the opening sequence. He is however quickly rescued by Globox, who has hidden a Silver Lum in his mouth. Upon collecting it, Rayman regains his power to shoot with his fist, and escapes together with Globox. They however get separated in the escape, and Rayman ends up in the Woods of Light where he rescues the Teensies. They tell him that Ly is held prisoner in the Fairy Glade, and take him to the Hall of Doors, from which he can travel to other locations through Spiral Doors. He frees Ly, who reveals that he will need to reunite the four masks to reawaken Polokus to have a chance to defeat the pirates. He then sets out on a quest to do so, while also freeing some of his friends, like Clark and Carmen, along the way.

In the end he makes it to the Prison Ship where he defeats the pirate leader Admiral Razorbeard in a battle. However, before escaping, Razorbeard sets his robot the Grolgoth on auto-destruct, causing the entire ship to blow up. Rayman's friends presume that he didn't make it out in time as they only found one of his shoes, but shortly after he can be seen coming on a crutch, showing that he survived the blast.
When Rayman 2 was released in Japan, Rayman's purple clothes and the stripes on Ly's suit were changed to blue, because it was believed that purple was the color of death in Japan. Purple, however, traditionally represents the aristocratic class in Japanese culture. This belief may have stemmed from the practice of Thai widows to wear purple when in mourning. Rayman 2 is also the only Rayman game where this sort of change was made in the Japanese localization.
In Rayman 3, Rayman can once again be seen sleeping at the beginning of the game. Unlike the previous games, he is not so easily woken up this time, and when Murfy comes to warn him and Globox about the Hoodlums, Murfy is forced to pick Rayman up and fly away with him before he wakes up. But right before Murfy flew away with Rayman, Globox accidentally took off his hands before making his own escape. Rayman and Murfy soon enough meet up with Globox again where Rayman can get his hands back. During several later occasions in the game, one of Rayman's shoes will start moving away, with Rayman shrinking into his other shoe to pursue it. Rayman is also able to use Laser-Washing Powders to gain new temporary abilities, such as the Vortex.
* Rayman can play the harmonica and the ukulele, as shown in Rayman Activity Centre and Rayman Jungle Run respectively.
* With the exception of the third volume, Rayman makes a cameo appearance in all volumes of Thitaume and Pujol's Rabbids comic books.
* Rayman was parodied in a comic strip in the second volume of Joueur du Grenier, with the main character being dressed like him. The joke poked fun at the limbless attributes of Rayman.
* Despite not having a neck, Rayman is still able to eat and swallow. This is seen in the opening cutscene of Rayman Origins.
* Rayman was about to have legs again during the development of Rayman 3, but the idea was quickly put aside.
* In Rayman Legends, it seems that Rayman did not age at all after the 100 years nap; the same goes for every other character returning from Rayman Origins.
**However, his voice clips have changed from Rayman Origins.
* Rayman, Globox and Barbara appear as collectible trophies in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, with models supplied by Ubisoft.
* A recurring gag is that Rayman is always seen sleeping in the beginning of every main game.

*This article is about the early production of the 3D build of the game. For the original 2D prototype, see Rayman 2 (cancelled prototype).

Rayman 2 underwent a bunch of changes during its development, most which have been found through hacking and from old trailers.

Rayman's training
Main article: Rayman's training

Before proper development of the 3D game began, a CGI short film using the concepts from the 2D game was created by the name of Rayman's training. The short film stars Rayman battling a living punching bag. It premiered in February 1st, 1998 to the tradeshow/film festival Imagina 1998. After that, it has never been seen in its entirety since.

In various Rayman adverts from 1997 to 1998, there were several instances of "stock footage" of a CGI Rayman, and the most complete instance of this would be the E3 1998 trailer to Rayman 2. For two decades, no one had known where this footage had come from exactly; it was assumed that they were made for the trailer.

In early 2021, it was put together by a number of Twitter users that the pre-rendered scenes in the E3 1998 trailer were actually from Rayman's training. The short was considered lost media until March 12 2022, when a version of the video with no sound was uploaded to YouTube.

Cut levels
Judging by the content of the PC version, the cutscene in the Prison Ship where Rayman frees the prisoners, which first appeared in the Dreamcast version, was originally meant to appear in the PC and Nintendo 64 versions.

In 2018 it was discovered that the PlayStation version contains a reference to a level by the name the Walk of Bravery, which was meant to appear between the Echoing Caves and the Precipice.

The PC version also has leftovers from several unused levels, being the following:
* Learn_20
* Whale_20
* Astro_20
* Wipe_10
* morbide_tst

There was also originally meant to be a connection between the Fairy Glade and the Echoing Caves in the Hall of Doors .

Early names
Below is a list of all of the currently known early names for levels, locations and characters.

* The Technical Check-up - originally the Emission Control station
* The Teensies - originally Smallbeeings
* Polokus - originally Polochus
* The Marshes of Awakening - originally the Marshes of the Awakening and the Marshlands of Awakening
* The Fairy Glade - originally the Fairy's Glade (the early name is used in Rayman Revolution)
* The Canopy - originally the Wilderness
* The Sanctuary of Stone and Fire - originally the Sanctuary of Lava and Fire
* The Precipice - originally the Great Rift
* The Top of the World - originally the Roof of the World
* The Sanctuary of Rock and Lava - originally the Sanctuary of Rock and Stone and the Sanctuary of Earth and Stone
* Beneath the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava - originally beneath the Sanctuary of Earth and Stone

Early plot
In early versions of the story from various sources, there are mentions of an interglactic circus or zoo as one of the main elements of the plot:

* In an interview with Pauline Jacquey and Michel Ancel, it is mentioned that the Robo-Pirates intended to sell the inhabitants they capture to an inter-galactic circus.
* In a press release from May 13, 1999, the game is described as "an adventure to rescue Rayman’s friends from an intergalactic circus".
* In a Rayman 2 pre-order form that could be obtained from the Rayman Activity Center box (and also from one of the PC demos), it is mentioned that: "The Mysterious Guild considers Rayman to be the ideal specimen to display in its intergalactic zoo of rare species". The text also mentions that Rayman's friends became the target of "Operation Kidnap", "the Guild's plan to fill its zoo with the universe's peace-loving residents". Similar information appeared in the official Rayman 2 website, however the "intergalactic zoo" was replaced with an "intergalactic circus".
* In an interview with Ubisoft (by the IGN staff), it is mentioned that the mysterious guild recruited the Robo-Pirates to capture rare species from Rayman's planet and create an intergalactic zoo. However, in another part of the official Rayman 2 website, a text can be found that describes the Mysterious Guild and the Robo-Pirates as one single entity, that intended to sell the inhabitants of Rayman's planet to an intergalactic circus.
* In the back cover of the first edition of Rayman 2: The Great Escape: Prima's Official Strategy Guide, the following text is displayed prominently: "There's more than one way out of this circus!".
* The intergalactic circus was also mentioned in magazines and even in box art from one of the first canadian releases of the game.
Miscellaneous
The cheat code "GETELIX" is mentioned along with the other known cheat codes in the PC version, but it appears to be unused. It was most likely meant to give the player the Elixir of Life before entering the Cave of Bad Dreams.

Unused textures
Many textures which were later used in the PlayStation version can also be found in the files for the PC version suggestion they were originally meant to be included there as well. These include the textures for Antitoons and the stone with Ly's face. Textures from the Dreamcast version were found as well, such as the textures for Eig. Some leftovers, such as controller icons, where found from the Nintendo 64 version.

Although the demos are very similar and include the same levels, there are some minor differences.

Differences from Rayman 2
*Rayman falls into the level after the Robo-Pirate animation in the first demo, instead of afterwards like in the final version.
*The total amount of cages show 0 in the first demo, instead of 7 like in the final version. Cages can however still be broken and will result in it showing 1/0 etc.
*The heads-up display can't by triggered to show by pressing "J".
*The transparency doesn't work on all textures.
*Rayman starts with the upgraded fist from the Canopy.
*The Hall of Doors uses the French name "Mapmonde".

Hi BunnieBlaster. While we appreciate your recent edits, in future we'd like you to read the basic rules and the manual of style before you make any more edits to this wiki. I did read those fucking things!!! whats wrong with my style?????? --Bunnieblaster 10:18, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
: For a start it was poorly written, and if you read the manual carefully, it clearly states that we don't use 2nd person [using the word "you"]. I also reverted the other edit because I feel that if we compile the info at another place [eg the forums] first, we can then put it back in a lot neater. There's also things like Wordpad to use to work on articles. Also I wouldn't flip out over what us admins will do with other people's edits, 'cause well, we have every right to revert and stuff so just cool it OK? -- StaceyW &#9836; 10:54, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

Bunnieblaster: I've added a (self-made thus unofficial) rendition of the original Ssssam model with the unused textures applied. This gives a more clear image of what these textures would have looked like in=game.

*This article is about the early production of the 3D build of the game. For the original 2D prototype, see Rayman 2 (cancelled prototype).

Rayman 2 underwent a bunch of changes during its development, most which have been found through hacking and from old trailers.

Demo
There were two different demos made for Rayman 2, both of them including two parts from the Fairy Glade.

Beta dialogue
The following text was found in the PC version's files. The text from the demo mostly includes minor differences, such as misspellings and incorrect grammar. Only the text that differs is shown here.

Introduction
The following text was found in the demo. The main difference here is the mentioning of Robo-Rats.

The Woods of Light
The following text was meant to appear during the intro when the pirates dragged Globox into Rayman's cell. Most of it was found in the demo, though the second line (No! Not the whip!) can't be found in the final game as well. It was most likely not used to keep the game at a low age rating.

{{quote|text=
No! Not the whip!

The demo version also includes a new line spoken by Jano after Rayman made the decision not to take the gold.
In the original version of the game, the Walk of Life is accessed via the Bayou and requires 60 Yellow Lums to enter. At the beginning of the Walk, there is a slope to slide down (Ly just runs down it), ending with a pit that is laced with cobwebs to bounce on. Rayman and Ly run through a waterfall and into a canyon where the walls on the other side of a set of weak wooden bridges are covered in vines. At the top, they drop down from a strong wooden plank onto another, run through a passage with a bouncing cobweb at the middle and jump from two cliffs to the ground. After another passage, there are more, smaller cliffs ending with the final cobweb, and then they make it to the end, where Ly performs a magical ritual and gives him maximum health regardless of whether he has beaten his time record.

There are no cages in this level, as it is a bonus.
PlayStation version
In the PlayStation version, it is linked to the Bayou in the Hall of Doors, and contains 30 Yellow Lums. 100 Yellow Lums are needed to access it, otherwise the spiral door leading to this world will not appear in the Hall of Doors. Much of the level design here remains the same as that in the original version, but with the following differences:

* Rayman does not slide automatically down the slope at the beginning, and there are more cobwebs to jump on.
* Where the canyon with the breakable wooden planks would be, there is now a chasm trailed with Purple Lums. This part of the level also takes to the vine wall on Rayman's left, rather than his right in the other versions.
* At the end, Ly will not perform her magical physically, neither will a Teensie appear, and Rayman will walk to the portal automatically.

It is unlocked by saving half of the 80 Familiar Spirits. Instead of picking up Yellow Lums, Rayman has to pick up 25 Red Lums. Upon completion, Rayman's lifebar is extended, provided that Rayman picked up all of the Red Lums along the way. Ly will not perform her magic physically here; nor will a Teensie appear to take Rayman away. The player is then given the choice to restart the race or to return to the stone Rayman entered from.

General Information
The Slapdash is not only the weakest member of the Hoodlum army, but also the least intelligent. These Hoodlums are traditionally branded the lowest form of Hoodlum soldier and are thus only given a stick with a boxing glove as an attacking weapon. In appearance, the Slapdash wears a bright red gown and boxing gloves. These Hoodlums are not the most visually striking in sight.

This Hoodlum is primarily seen raiding The Fairy Council with two Hoodblasters, outside the council in part 2. Later in the game these enemies often appear in small formed groups, usually at camps with other types of Hoodlum.

Attack
The only real form of attack the Slapdash has is its weapon (being a boxing glove attached to the end of a stick, as previously stated). This is used both to crudely swipe the victim if he comes too close, or to fire boxing gloves from longer distances. Its functioning, therefore, is more complex than it may seem at first.

As aforementioned, the Slapdash is the least intelligent Hoodlum and has no premeditated form of defence, aside a crude swipe of its stick. It can therefore be defeated with one single shot (naturally without requirement of influence from the superpowers).

Appearance in game
The Slapdash makes appearance in the following worlds:

* The Fairy Council
* Clearleaf Forest
* The Bog of Murk
* The Land of the Livid Dead
* The Desert of the Knaaren
* The Summit Beyond the Clouds
* Hoodlum Headquarters
* The Tower of the Leptys

Trivia
* The glove seen in his beta appearance can be found in the Hoodlum Headquarters.

The Buccaneer is the massive Pirate Ship the Robo-Pirates used as a main base and in order to get to the Glade of Dreams.

Description
On the outside it looks like any normal Pirate Ship except much bigger and with a giant Robo-Pirate skull carved on the front. The inside has lots of wood, lava, technology and metalworks.

History
Polokus transported Rayman to the Buccaneer when all four masks were collected, while the General (who appeared in Tonic Trouble) sold the Grolgoth to Admiral Razorbeard. Rayman had to slide and fly his way through before he reached Razorbeard. Razorbeard lured Rayman to him by using Globox as bait. It worked, and the Admiral, in his new Grolgoth, fought Rayman. Rayman managed to damage him a little and Razorbeard tried to jump on Rayman, but ended up smashing the ground and plunging them both into the lava pool below. Rayman was saved by a Silver Lum sent by Ly, but the Grolgoth, being a machine, didn't need saving. Rayman managed to take control of a flying shell and defeat Razorbeard, but the Admiral left before blowing up the ship with Rayman in it. Rayman was thought dead as a result of the explosion but walked in on his own funeral.

Trivia
* At the beginning of the Prison Ship, The General from one of Michel Ancel's other games, Tonic Trouble, appears. He sells Razorbeard the Grolgoth.
* When Rayman fights Razorbeard in the Crow's Nest, if Rayman flies straight up at the ceiling while repeatedly pressing the jump and shoot button, he'll go through it and end up in a tunnel. If Rayman flies through to the end of the tunnel, he will be transported back to Razorbeard but with infinite shots.
The Xbox version (which I own as well) and the GameCube version underwent some minor changes. Not going into great detail, though one of these was added cinematics before each cup (also new) featuring Murfy acting as kind of a pre-game announcer/paparazzi getting into the rooms where characters would ready themselves and describing the cup to be played. (At the end of each one he would be beat up or something like that by guys in the room as the camera would switch to a view of the door outside the room.) A keg is an object that looks like a barrel found in any pirate stronghold in Rayman 2: The Great Escape and most of the handheld games that followed. It is used to break open doors that are sealed with metal sparadraps, break open some cages that are right above Rayman but out of his reach, or as a means of airborne transport by setting it alight. Kegs are disposed by some sort of hatches, which have got a variation of the pirate logo on it. A new keg will be dropped by these hatches when the keg is destroyed. Whenever the sparadrap or other obstacle is destroyed, they won't drop any more kegs. Sometimes kegs roll down hills in places such as the Bayou, making them an obstacle for Rayman, but when he jumps on them, Rayman will bounce on them giving him a higher jump, most times to reach lums.

They are also seen as obstacles in Rayman M and Rayman Rush.
Globox Village is a bonus area that is exclusive to the Dreamcast version of Rayman 2: The Great Escape. As the name suggests it is the home of the Globox family, and also the home of several mini-games that could be unlocked by collecting the six Glob Crystals that are scattered at various points of the game. The village is located near the very end of the first level, Woods of Light, by grabbing onto the Purple Lum that floats in the air after he climbs up the two pillars in the end of the level.

When Rayman firsts visits the village, he will meet a few Baby Globoxes that will soon be playable in the minigame, Globox Disk, and as he collects more of the Glob Crystals, more playable babies will appear. The babies and the portals to the minigames are watched over by an unnamed red adult Globox.

Trivia
* There is a glitch when you jump on baby globoxes: when you jump on a baby globox, then land on another one, then land on the floor, rayman will be flattened like when he jumps from a great height (Dreamcast only).
Rayman 2: The Great Escape is the second major game in the Rayman series, and is the sequel to Rayman. It was first released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64 and was followed by ports for the Sega Dreamcast, PC, and Sony PlayStation, with each port being different in its own way perhaps due to the specifications of each console. It was also the first 3D game of the series, and introduced many brand new major characters, though featured almost none from its predecessor. Rayman 2: The Great Escape is often abbreviated as Rayman 2 or (to avoid confusion with the similarly named Rayman 2: Revolution) R2. The Sony PlayStation version of Rayman 2 was later released as a PSOne Classic on the North American PlayStation Network, on December 18, 2008.

Early production
Main article: Rayman 2 (2D prototype)

Recently, it was revealed that Rayman 2 was first developed to be a 2D platforming game in the same vein as Rayman, for the Sony PlayStation and the Sega Saturn.[source] Screenshots and videos suggested that the game was still going to be about a robot invasion as it featured enemies similar to the Robo-Pirates, and it also featured background platforming - using a device similar to a shower head and a toilet flush, Rayman could teleport from the foreground to the background. One video in particular also featured a female character with red hair that appears to be Betilla the Fairy, but could also be Betina in a cameo.

The whole of this game was cancelled in favour of the 3D version it became, though a playable prototype (version 01.12d) featuring one level is included in the PlayStation version of Rayman 2, and unlocked if the player collects at least 720 Yellow Lums out of 800. It was recently discovered that this prototype was finished on May 31st 1996 and was sent to the Playstation RayMan 2 team for review.

Gameplay
The gameplay in Rayman 2 is somewhat similar to that of Rayman, though this time Rayman starts with a few powers to defend himself, one of which is given to him by Globox who is introduced at the very beginning. The aim of the game is to rescue all of the Yellow Lums that have been scattered following the explosion of the Primordial Core, and the creatures that have been imprisoned in cages, while defeating any Robo-Pirates that stand in Rayman's way.

Main Characters
The Good Guys
*Rayman - The hero and protagonist of the game
*Globox - Rayman's best friend; husband of Uglette and father of the baby Globoxes
*Ly the Fairy - Rayman's friend and powerful ally
*Murfy - Serves as an "instructor"-type character
*The Teensies - Keepers of the Hall of Doors
*Clark the Giant - A friend of Rayman's
*Sssssam - a snake who helps Rayman cross the Marshes of Awakening

The Bad Guys
*Admiral Razorbeard - The villain of the game
*Robo-Pirate Army - Razorbeard's army

Environment
Unlike Rayman, Rayman 2 is not divided into certain themed worlds, but rather a trail of 20 different locations, none of which are as surreal as its predecessor's, but are still dissimilar to the real world. The levels are played in a linear fashion in a World Map known as the Hall of Doors (Isle of Doors in the Dreamcast version), with most levels following a single path (though the Cave of Bad Dreams, Walk of Life, and Walk of Power are on side-paths). The player is able to backtrack to past levels if he or she wishes, and can move on to the final stage without breaking all of the cages.
Hack
It is possible to run the game under higher resolutions than 1024x768 by a simple hack.
By editing the file C:\WINDOWS\UbiSoft\ubi.in with a basic text editor, you'll have something like this
<pre>
[SYSTEM]
Test Sound=1
3DFX=0
Memory=511
Windows colors=34
CPU=9
GLI_Dll=DirectX6
GLI_Driver=display
GLI_Device=Direct3D HAL
GLI_Mode=1 - 1024 x 768 x 16
ShortCutDesktopName=C:\Documents and Settings\Administrateur\Bureau\Jouer à Rayman 2
ShortCutDirectory=C:\Documents and Settings\Administrateur\Menu Démarrer\Programmes\Ubi Soft Games\Rayman 2
Language=French
Configuration=2
VolumeName=RAYMAN2

[OSD]
Valid=TRUE
</pre>
The GLI_Mode line defines the resolution of the game. You'll just have to replace "1024 x 768" by "1440 x 900" to run the game in 1440x900 instead of the default 1024x768.

Caution: Modifying the other values may crash the game.

Promotion
Ubisoft promoted Rayman 2 with many toys and even a cartoon. There were YoYos, cell phone covers, a PlayStation 2 remote, a version of the game with a figure, and Happy Meal toys.

Cartoon
Main Article: Rayman: The Animated Series

McDonald's
Ubisoft joined with McDonald's to make a happy meal with Rayman toys. These toys were a Rayman rolling on a Walking Shell, Rayman on a plum with spinning helicopter hair, a light-up cage, a sound-making Henchman 800, a wobbling Globox and Ly.

Tonic Trouble
Characters from each game made cameo appearances in the other game. In Tonic Trouble, Rayman would be seen during the game's end credits. In Rayman 2, a salesman who previously appeared in the intro sequence of the PC version of Tonic Trouble sells the Grolgoth to Razorbeard late in the game. Tonic Trouble was worked on (though not developed) by Michel Ancel, used the Rayman 2 engine, originally appeared on the same platforms as Rayman 2, and was also released by Ubisoft, giving reason for the crossovers, though Tonic Trouble had not fared well critically or commercially, whereas Rayman 2 became successful in both areas.

Rayman Mobile
Rayman Bowling, Rayman Golf, and Rayman Garden are spin-offs of Rayman 2 and its remakes. Gameloft ported them to the N-Gage and other Samsung and Nokia phones.

Remakes
*Rayman 2: Revolution - PlayStation 2 remake that was essentially a slightly more difficult version of the original, with added levels, enemies, and a new free-roaming feature.
*Rayman DS - DS remake identical to the original N64 version, though many glitches and bugs were included that were not present in the original.

Trivia
* In the German gaming magazine PC Player (issue 01/2000) Rayman 2: The Great Escape was named as "Best Platformer in 1999".

* The PSX release of Rayman 2 originally came with a digital watch.

* In Japan, some characters with purple in them were changed. Rayman's body was made blue, Sssssam the snake turned into a kind of green, and Jano's hat was turned red. But the most bizarre change was made to Ly, who's body was changed from yellow/purple to white/pink.

* The names of a few characters changed during design of the game.

The original name of Globox was Globber.
The original name of Razorbeard was Razorface.
The original name of the Teensies was Smalbeings.
The original name of Polokus was Polochus.
And the robo-pirates were originally named the Mysterious Guild.

Trivia
- There is a glitch when you jump on baby globoxes: when you jump on a baby globox, then land on another one, then land on the floor, rayman will be flattened like when he jumps from a great height (Dreamcast only).
