* This article is about the level in the original Rayman 2 and its remakes. For the race course in Rayman Rush, see Canopy (Rayman Rush).

The Canopy is a level in Rayman 2 and its remakes. In all versions of the game except for the Game Boy Color version, it is where Rayman meets Globox for the second time in the game, and the power of his magic fist is upgraded by a Silver Lum. In all versions except Rayman Revolution and Rayman 2 Forever, it is the ninth level in the game.

The Canopy shares its name with another level in Rayman Rush, but the two are distinctly separate.

Phase 1
This area is a chasm full of cobwebs, that appears to be the inside of a giant tree. Before long, Rayman is being stalked by a giant spider. This creature can be defeated, but it is not compulsory. Rayman must climb up the cobwebs to evade the spider, find the two cages and collect the Yellow Lums there, before dropping down a pit and into the next area.
</gallery>

Phase 2
Globox is being held prisoner in the area, but first, Rayman will have to defeat a red Henchman 800, and then flick the switch that opens the gate. Globox will then follow his limbless friend, provided that there are no pirates around. They both have to go through a passage that is blocked by laser bars, but Globox uses his Rain Dance to deactivate it. This leads to some cliff sides with gaps neither of them can cross, so Globox waters a glowing plant to make a flower appear. Rayman stands on this to cross the gap, then shoots at a wooden sparadrap which breaks a wooden pole down for Globox to walk on. Then, they come across a huge fire, which Globox gladly puts out.

Down the passage, another red Henchman 800 appears, and Globox runs away to hide in a cubbyhole. When Rayman defeats it, he walks back to his friend to reassure him that there is no shame of being afraid of the pirates and the warships, and then wishes he has more powers. This triggers Globox's memory, and he gives Rayman a Silver Lum, which upgrades his magic fist - he can now charge up his shots which will make them more powerful.

Phase 3
Rayman and Globox come out into the open, but a warship appears, sending Globox into hiding again. Out comes a tougher red Henchman 800, and once it is defeated, the pair move on, shutting down laser barriers with the Rain Dance. Down that passage, where another red Henchman 800 appears, there is a small stronghold which is being guarded by a security camera of a sort. The only thing left to use is a small bush, which Globox grows it big enough for Rayman to hide in it, and when he gets to the door, the security deactivates the door. At the exit, Globox confirms that he cannot continue adventuring with his limbless friend, and wants to see his wife, Uglette.
This level is identical to that of the original version. In the very first part of the level, it is possible to execute the "Gauntlet" cheat (shooting repeatedly to gain a Power Fist upgrade) as it is a vertical passage. This is easiest to do when attempting to defeat the spider.
The level is mostly identical. The only difference is that it features a brief cutscene in which Globox informs Rayman he has to see Uglette, as opposed to the other version which have this exchange during the player's control of Rayman.

Another minor difference is that when the player replays the level, Globox will still appear, even when he is supposed to be captured aboard the Prison Ship.

The Canopy in Rayman Revolution stays fairly the same as that in previous versions. Some graphical differences are present in the first area - there are patches of green leaves growing around the inside of the tree, and in a couple of spots the tree bark is broken allowing Rayman to see outside (but not go there).
In the third phase, Rayman is required to destroy the warship, rather than just fight the Robo-Pirates that come from it. The Teensie cage at the end does not count towards the total number of cages in the game, like in the PlayStation version.

Trivia
*It is possible to smash the cage behind the locked door and open the portal before actually unlocking it.
*Before the level even starts, Rayman must find a walking shell and ride it to the entrance, which has been blocked by falling stones.
*A glitch is possible at the start. Rayman needs to jump on the walking shell and ride around, heading back to the East Plain. Rayman will automatically jump off. The shell, however, will carry on walking but will not be destroyed. Unless Rayman exits the Globox's House area and return, the shell will not reappear.

The Menhir Hills is a location from Rayman 2 and its remakes, although it is absent from the Game Boy Color version. It is characterized by its focus on riding walking shells, its short length (one of the shortest levels in all versions of Rayman 2), being the only level other than the Fairy Glade and the Marshes of Awakening that Rayman must re-visit at least once to complete the game, and being the first level in the game to give Rayman a sidekick – in this case, Clark the Giant.

When Admiral Razorbeard seized Rayman's world, the Menhir Hills was the construction site of two Robo-Pirate training facilities: the Military Academy and the Elite Troop Training Center. These facilities largely cut the hills into three segments.

Original version
R2PCLevel

Phase 1
When Rayman first arrives in the Menhir Hills, Murfy immediately appears right in Rayman's face and warns him about the nearby academy's walking shell. Murfy hints that the shell may be tamable, and Rayman shortly does just that. By riding the walking shell, Rayman is able to cross a patch of nettles to reach the Military Academy.

Rayman enters the Academy to find two Henchmen 800 asleep; though the sign outside hints at sneaking past them, the Robo-Pirates are of the weak variety and are fairly easy to defeat (though particularly in all versions but Rayman Revolution this is the first time multiple Robo-Pirates are encountered at the same time) (it should also be noted that there are more than two Robo-Pirates in the Academy in Revolution, some of which being hidden). Whatever the player has Rayman do, the hero must continue on to leave the small Academy.

<gallery widths="320px" heights="240px">
R2TGE-PC-TheMenhirHills-HallOfDoors.jpg|The level's characteristic walking shell is used to represent it in the Hall of Doors.
</gallery>

Phase 2
After taming another walking shell, Rayman crosses a nettle patch and must dodge and weave through crates and the nettles that protrude in the various tunnels he goes through. The end of the ride leaves Rayman at the entrance of the Elite Troop Training Center. As intimidating as the name is, Rayman soon finds there's nothing to worry about: Clark has already taken care of the students inside. The inside of the Elite Troop Training Center appears as a separate part in the Nintendo 64 and Nintendo DS versions.

Clark is not feeling well; apparently, while fighting the Robo-Pirates he accidentally swallowed a robot part. Clark's future will not be bright unless Rayman can bring him the Elixir of Life from the Cave of Bad Dreams.

This requirement forces the level to end immediately, unfinished. In all versions other than the PlayStation version, Rayman must backtrack to the Marshes of Awakening (in Revolutions case, this may be the first visit) to locate the Guardian of the Cave of Bad Dreams. As Rayman does not know the Cave's name prior to his encounter with Clark, the Cave was not accessible prior to the encounter. In the PlayStation version, Rayman may go directly to the Cave of Bad Dreams from the Menhir Hills.

<gallery widths="320px" heights="240px">
Elite Training Academy.PNG|The Elite Troop Training Center
</gallery>

Return
In all versions other than Rayman Revolution, Rayman is again lectured by Murfy about the walking shells when he returns to the Menhir Hills. Rayman must travel through the entire level once more until he reaches Clark.

Revived by the Elixir of Life, Clark busts a wooden wall in the Elite Troop Training Academy, allowing Rayman access to the empty school. Rayman must lead Clark to other wooden walls so that he may break through them as well. In the end Rayman leaves Clark and descends a staircase leading out of the academy.

Phase 3
In the final segment of the Menhir Hills, Rayman must once again tame a walking shell. After doing so, he must ride it up a steep slope and then through a tunnel full of rising menhirs. The tunnel leads to a ‘forest’ full of toppling menhirs Rayman must dodge; the bridge he crosses has a similar set of obstacles. Finally, after avoiding the many menhirs, Rayman and the walking shell leap off a cliff and into a Spiral Door. The level is now finished.

In the PlayStation version, the level is shorter still, with the entire first phase being cut. Therefore, the player has not even completed a single level of the world when they head for the Cave of Bad Dreams. As Murfy does not serve as guide in this version, his segment is also cut (although it couldn't have been anyway, as the area in which it occurs was cut). A stone can be found near the entrance portal in which Ly explains that Rayman must tame the shell. Unlike Murfy, she appears certain that the shell can be tamed, although still does not elaberate on how to do this. The first shell ride is slightly harder with another walking shell following the player, meaning the player will have to constantly swerve around in circles to avoid the enemy shell. A new cut scene has been added at the end of the aforementioned shell chase, in which Rayman ends the chase by leaping from his shell and flying through a large door, which promptly closes. The structure in which Clark is found is also named the Elite Troop Training Academy, which was originally credited to another facility in the here-removed first stage. However, this structure may well have been part of the academy anyway.

Another difference is that the portal which Rayman uses is located within the room in which Clark is found, rather than just outside as with all other versions. Therefore, it appears in the cutscene. However, it is exclusive to the cutscene and cannot be seen or used outside of the scene.

In the first stage, originally second stage, there is a subtle difference in that the bridge Rayman crosses on the shell has had its crates removed. This is notable, however, as the loading screen for this level depicts the bridge with the crates, as seen originally.

Also, there is an additional cut scene when Rayman and Clark part, in which Clark expresses his intent to return home and rest. Rayman asks him if he will join him later, which Clark agrees to. Despite this, Clark has no extended role in this version and is only seen once more in the Tomb of the Ancients, as per other versions.

Backtracking
After Rayman has completed the Canopy, he is able to light torches. An alcove under the entrance of the Elite Troop Training Academy holds one of the Menhir Hills' cages, but to reach it Rayman must first light a nearby torch and ride a keg over a large gap. There are also several Yellow Lums behind a laser covered door near the exit of the first phase, but it requires the Rain Mask to open the door.
Trivia
* The meeting with Clark inside the Elite Troop Training Center is technically still in phase 2, but once inside, the door closes, and Rayman cannot go back to the first part of phase 2. There is a different exit to a small outside area which contains a Spiral Door. It is the only level in the game that has a portal back to the hub that is not at the very beginning. It exists to allow Rayman to exit, if he revisits the level before obtaining the Elixir of Life for Clark.
The Chamber of the Teensies
Before entering the Sanctuary, Rayman is instead teleported to a hall, in which he meets the four Teensies he met in the Woods of Light. They tell him that he is now in the Chamber of the Teensies, a strange place that grants access to new worlds, provided that Rayman has collected at least 100 Yellow Lums. If he has, then they will allow him to pass through the gigantic stone doors. A little hesitant, Rayman approaches them, and is then coaxed to go in by the Teensies.

Rayman will visit the Chamber for each time he is about to find a world that hides one of Polokus' masks.
R2TGE-PC-TheSanctuaryOfWaterAndIce-HallOfDoors.jpg|A Red Henchman 800 is used to represent the level in the Hall of Doors.
</gallery>

Phase 1
Rayman arrives on the beach of an island – one side, there are cliffs to climb, on the other side is a wooden pier with a cage hanging from a pole. While climbing up the cliffs, he will encounter a crab and a purple Henchman 800 that can drill into the ground and tunnel to a nearby position – the drill can be deadly if it emerges and catches Rayman from underground. At the top of the cliffs, there is a little cave, and a pool of water, which has an underwater passage that leads to a small room with a cage.

Rayman will then have to go back that way, and then climb the netted ladder, where he will then end up on a higher cliff on which small Robo-Pirate installations were constructed. There is also a strange door, and on its foot are two odd looking triangles, a yellow and a blue one – the pirates have been looking for a way to open this door as well. Then Rayman will encounter a red Henchman 800, and once the coast is clear, he can proceed to throwing kegs at the metal sparadraps that lock the two buildings. Each one contains a Magic Sphere, which needs to be placed on top of these triangular bases according to their colour. Once they are both placed on, the door, which leads to the Sanctuary itself, will open. It is possible to move Rayman during the scene depicting the door opening. If the player moves him away from the location of the scene, he will disappear off screen, although will simply be found by the player wherever he ended up after the cut scene.

Down the corridor, there is a hall in which lots of Yellow Lums are found. Its walls display octopuses with tentacles resembling waves. Though the name of the Sanctuary suggests a mixed environment of water and ice, the interior of this part of the Sanctuary lacks water and is predominantly icy. At the end of this chamber, Rayman finds an open passageway which leads into a gaping, star-filled void: the next area.

Phase 2
After stepping through the passageway, Rayman finds himself on a blue stone platform, floating in a star-filled abyss reminiscent of the Hall of Doors. Chunks of stone float in the void. Rayman must slide down a slippery, water-coated slope, jumping over bottomless pits, sliding through icy tunnels and catching Yellow Lums as he goes. At the end of this series of slopes, Rayman slides up a ramp into the air and finds himself face-to-face with Axel, the Guardian of the Sanctuary of Water and Ice, who exists solely to defend the first mask of Polokus from all intruders. A chain of Purple Lums leads from Rayman to Axel; with his grappling fist, Rayman must swing from one Purple Lum to the next while avoiding the icicles thrown by Axel. When Rayman gets close enough, he must use his magic fist to strike the icicle hanging above Axel's head; this causes it to fall on the Guardian, defeating him. If Rayman falls or is knocked down from a Purple Lum, he slides back down the slope and must begin the battle again.

Once the battle is over, an extra Purple Lum appears from Axel's remains, and he will have to swing onto the others once again, to cross the gap in between, onto another floating building with a waterfall flowing down. The waterfall curtains a large hallway. At the end of the hallway is a grassy chamber with a thin but steep hill, which has a strange pillar at the top with rings engraved on it. As Rayman shyly approaches this, the white ring on his chest begins to glow, as does the ring on the pillar, and an electric beam connects it to his body. This opens the pillar up, revealing the first mask of Polokus. Rayman climbs onto it, and when he takes it, he is finally warped away as the pillar closes itself.

Rayman then arrives on a moonlit cliff. At the edge of the cliff is a pillar similar to the one in the sanctuary, but atop it sits Polokus, the god of the Glade of Dreams. Polokus explains that he is far away despite being physically present, and can only speak in dreams, but by travelling to the Sanctuaries and acquiring their corresponding masks Rayman can bring Polokus back. Polokus takes the mask from the sanctuary and places it on his pillar, then warps Rayman back to the Hall of Doors (the Teensie Circle in the Minisaurus Plains in Rayman Revolution).
This level remains the same as before, but with the following exceptions:

* At the beach in phase 1, a purple Henchman 800 parachutes down and replaces the drilling pirate.
* In the cave in which the cage is found, a Glob Crystal can be found as well. Instead of the cage being on the floor, it is hanging from the ceiling.
* A drilling purple Henchman 800 shooting helicopter bombs replaces the other pirate at the door to the Sanctuary.
* In phase 2, it appears to be snowing, mainly as a graphical enhancement.
* A yellow glow surrounds Axel.
* Strangely, no victory fanfare plays, neither does the jingle that usually plays when Rayman picks up a Mask. In the iOS version, these tracks play but are erroneously set to loop infinitely, causing a very strange effect.
The level is absent. Instead, Axel and the first mask can be found in Whale Bay (which occurs in this level's place, between the Menhir Hills and the Bayou, rather than after the Canopy). Only Axel's arena and the mask chamber are lifted from the Sanctuary of Water and Ice for Whale Bay.

One notable change to the Axel section is that if Rayman revisits the level he will have to battle Axel again, whereas in most other versions Axel can only be fought once.

While the game still refers to this level as the Sanctuary of Water and Ice, the characters now refer to it as the Lost Island, which appears to be the name of the island upon which the sanctuary was built. It also bears the following changes:

* On the beach in phase 1, there are more Robo-Pirates as well as there are more trees, leaving Rayman with less room for him to move around while attacking them. He would also have to jump off the top of the cliffs and glide to catch the Yellow Lums at are above his reach. In the cave at the top of the cliffs, there is another pirate, this time with bombs and a flamethrower. Another pirate also sleeps next to the ladder.
* Most notably, there is a little room near the Sanctuary door, in which a cannon stands. Throwing a keg will not ignite the sparks it emits, so Rayman will have to backtrack once the power of his shots is upgraded in the Canopy.
* More pirates stand at the door - two purple ones and a yellow one. Once they are cleared, Rayman can proceed to gathering and placing the Magic Spheres as normal.
* In phase 2, the music played at the icy slopes is different.

Phase 1
The level begins with a cinematic involving a conversation between Admiral Razorbeard and the Spyglass Pirate. The Spyglass Pirate informs Razorbeard that Rayman has arrived at the swamp. Razorbeard chomps down on a Yellow Lum lowering the Yellow Lum maximum to 999. He then orders Rayman to be stopped. The scene ends with warships dropping down from the Buccaneer.

Rayman arrives at the Bayou. As he enters, a warship descends from the sky and prepares to bombard Rayman. Rayman, unable to swim through the green swampy waters, hops aboard a barrel floating in the water. The barrel begins to float down the river at the same time that the warship begins releasing helicopter bombs.

Shooting the bombs to avoid their explosions, Rayman arrives at a small bit of bare land. To the left is an old branch with a cage, collecting the two Red Lums inside. From here he hops aboard another barrel, and floats down more of the river until he reaches the bottom of a canyon. The warship is unable to reach him here and leaves. When Rayman goes to the top of the canyon, he sees a switch, and hits it. Rayman hops on the bridges and he goes into a cave. There a Robo-Pirate sleeps.

After doing battle with this Robo-Pirate, Rayman finds himself swinging onto another barrel via a Purple Lum. However, the waterfall he begins floating towards is haunted by Zombie Chickens, which rise from the murk and attack. Beyond the phantoms, Rayman leaps onto a log and oversees another warship flying above the Bayou. Rayman flutters down to a wooden bridge, but the warship immediately fires a cannonball. Rayman dodges the cannonball quickly, but the bridge plummets into the water. Rayman rushes across bridge after bridge, and finally delves into a small cave.

Accessing the Walk of Life
At the very beginning of the first area, Rayman can choose to turn left and find the entrance to the Walk of Life, which is one of two portals in the game that are surrounded by a circle of pillars with Ly the Fairy's face carved on each. When Rayman goes near this, an image of Ly will appear in the middle, and grant access to the Walk, depending on whether 60 Yellow Lums are gathered. The Walk of Life can then be accessed through the Hall of Doors. While this is optional in terms of gaining full health upon finishing the race, the Walk must be visited at least once in order to obtain the 50 Yellow Lums scattered within it.

Phase 2
Following more trials evading warships on rickety bridges, Rayman arrives at the next segment of the Bayou. Rayman must scale the sides of giant trees while dodging kegs being rolled into the river. At the end of the trail is a great cliff towering over the swamp. In the distance stands a demonic tree with fiery eyes and a grand mouth. By pressing a switch, a bridge extends allowing Rayman the distance he needs to reach a Purple Lum.

The Lum sends him swinging into the tree's mouth, only to lead to an encounter with the invincible Gorilla Pirate. Rayman must either evade the Gorilla Pirate or send it to its doom, but either way he arrives at a booby trap-filled corridor. By pressing a time switch, Rayman is able to deactivate the laser-barred exit and evade the axe pendulums blocking the way.

At the end of the corridor, Rayman escapes out of the tree and arrives at a pipe of sorts. Here he releases a Teensie and ends the level.
This level's layout is identical to the original versions except for some mosquitoes, frogs and more piranhas dotted around the landscape. The Walk of Life can be accessed as in the original version and can later be accessed again through the Isle of Doors.

In the cutscene before the mission starts, the scene where Admiral Razorbeard ate a Yellow Lum was changed to him eating a Red Lum, because the PlayStation version has only 800 Yellow Lums and the hidden 1000th Yellow Lum present in all other versions wasn't included (the Lum was included in the area with 3 switches in other versions but this section was removed completely in the PlayStation version).

The stone circle to the left of the entrance portal was also removed as it can be directly accessed from the Hall of Doors (which has no Lum requirement).

The rest of the level remains the same except for some more Robo-Pirates.

In phase 1, near the end of the level, there is a Yellow Lum on the side of the cliff. The last Purple Lum of the level has three Yellow Lums that Rayman can swing onto and jump to get.

As Rayman walks out from the cave in phase 2, he finds himself at a clearing. On the side of a cliff is a prison similar to Ly's from the Fairy Glade. However, this time it holds a mosquito look-alike, Bzzit. Bzzit warns Rayman of an ambush, and soon Robo-Pirates parachute down to attack. Rayman fights them off, but is quickly met with a new challenge. A Yellow Henchman 800 rises from the ground and begins firing its energy projectiles at Rayman. This is the strongest Robo-Pirate Rayman has fought so far in the game. Once he defeats it, the forcefield is turned off, and Bzzit cheers for him upon his rescue, then tells Rayman to meet him at the Pier in the Minisaurus Plain. Rayman nods, and pushes onwards.

In this version, it is impossible to acquire all of the Bayou's Yellow Lums on the first visit. The cliff overlooking the demon tree holds a dry plant bulb. After completing the Pirate Mines, Rayman may use the Rain Dance to revitalise the bulb so that it grows into a large plant, which can be used as a platform to access the remaining Yellow Lums, which are otherwise inaccessible.
