'''The Desert of the Knaaren''' is the fifth of the nine levels of ''[[Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc]]''. It is a harsh, scorching plain of sand, dotted by rocky outcrops and yawning chasms. The huge dinosaur-like skeletons which lie on the sand resemble those seen in [[the Cave of Bad Dreams]] in ''[[Rayman 2: The Great Escape|Rayman 2]]''. The desert looks hellish at first sight. However, beneath the barren, lifeless surface is a vast tunnel and cave system that delves deep into the rocky under-layers. This is where the native species of this land, the [[Knaaren]], dwell. The Knaaren carved their tunnels out of the solid rock, and they guard their domain fiercely and effectively, constantly patrolling the many passages.

[[Rayman]] is sent here from [[the Land of the Livid Dead]] by the second [[Teensie Doctor]], [[Roméo Patti]]. Like [[Art Rytus]], Roméo was unable to extract the [[Black Lum]] [[André]] from [[Globox]]'s body, so Roméo sends Rayman and Globox to the Desert of the Knaaren, where the third Teensie Doctor, [[Gonzo]], has his office. Along the way, Rayman and Globox fall into the tunnels, and Globox is captured by the [[Knaaren]]. Rayman must fight his way past Knaaren and [[Zombie Chicken]]s, and solve many puzzles along the way. Eventually he is captured by [[Reflux]], the champion of the Knaaren, who challenges him to a duel in the arena. Once Rayman succeeds, Globox is freed, and [[Gumsi]], the child-king of the Knaaren, uses the [[Sceptre of the Leptys]] to their god, [[the Leptys]], who grants Rayman the [[Grimace]] ability as a reward. The heroes then meet up with Gonzo, who summons the other two doctors. Together they finally manage to extract André, who escapes and tracks down the humiliated Reflux. André promises Reflux the opportunity to destroy Rayman once and for all if he will steal the Sceptre of the Leptys for him, and his promise is fulfilled in [[the Tower of the Leptys]], the game's final level.

'''Michel Ancel''' is a French video game designer and the creator of [[Rayman]]. He was heavily involved in the development of both [[Rayman 1|the original ''Rayman'' game]] and ''[[Rayman 2: The Great Escape|Rayman 2]]'', though he had only an advisory role in the production of ''[[Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc|Rayman 3]]''. He continued designing ''Rayman'' games with ''[[Rayman 4 (cancelled prototype)|Rayman 4]]'', though this game was cancelled in favour of ''[[Rayman Raving Rabbids]]'' and was never released.

==Personal life==
Michel Ancel was born in Monaco on the 29th of March, 1972. Ancel is currently married to Alexandra Ancel ''née'' Steible, with whom he has two children. He is the stepfather of Alexandra's four older children, and has two more children of his own from a previous relationship. His eldest child, Claire, was born when he was sixteen years old. Alexandra worked with Ancel on the first two ''Rayman'' games, as well as ''Beyond Good & Evil'' and ''King Kong''.

==Video game developing career==
Ancel met the game developer Nicolas Choukroun in Montpellier at the age of 17. He worked as a graphics artist on several of Choukroun's games, such as ''The Intruder'' and ''Pick'n Pile''. Ancel's first demo, ''Mechanic Warriors'', was developed for software house [[Lankhor]]. In 1988, Ancel created a computer animation illustrating the effect of CFCs on the ozone layer as part of a competition in a professional journal. The animation, which depicted the Earth being transformed into a vast desert, did not win the competition; however, it attracted the attention of [[Ubisoft|Ubi Soft]], who hired him as a graphics artist.

Ancel's first game as both programmer and graphic artist, ''The Brain Blasters'' (also known as ''The Teller'') was published by Ubi Soft in 1990. In 1992, he began to work on ''[[Rayman 1]]'', his directorial debut. It was originally released in 1995 for the Atari Jaguar and PC, and in 1996 for PlayStation and Sega Saturn.

Ancel was also heavily involved in the development of ''[[Rayman 2: The Great Escape]]'' in 1999, but had only an advisory role on ''[[Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc]]''. Although he praised its development team, he says that the game is "a bit too concrete for my tastes", and that he "would have made the game differently".

In 2003, he created ''Beyond Good & Evil'', which garnered critical acclaim and a cult following, but was a commercial failure. However, acclaimed film director Peter Jackson's admiration for the game – and his frustration with EA's handling of the ''The Lord of the Rings'' license – led to Ancel being given direction of the ''Peter Jackson's King Kong'' video game adaptation. In spite of Ubisoft's reluctance to produce a ''Beyond Good & Evil'' sequel, Ancel has expressed a clear wish to produce one in the future.

On March 13, 2006, Ancel, along with ''Mario'' creator Shigeru Miyamoto and ''Alone in the Dark''/''Little Big Adventure'' creator Frédérick Raynal, was knighted by the French Minister of Culture and Communication, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, a knight of arts and literature. It was the first time that video game developers were honoured with this distinction.

==Current projects==
On April 5, 2006, [[Ubisoft]] announced Ancel was leading the development of the fourth game in the ''Rayman'' series, ''[[Rayman Raving Rabbids]]'', for the Nintendo Wii. The game began production in early 2005 and was released on November 15, 2006 for the launch of the Wii. However, Ancel was notably absent from the project after its E3 announcement, and he has made no public appearances regarding the game after the development team switched focus from a free-roaming platformer to the final minigames format shortly after E3. In the final game, Ancel was only credited with storyboarding and character design, while design credits were shared between multiple other people.

In an interview with Nintendo Power, Ancel confirmed that he was working on a new project which meant a lot to him. He also talked about Jade from ''Beyond Good & Evil'' and said that "I really hope that Jade will continue to keep her values and her personality". [[Ubisoft]]'s CEO, [[Yves Guillemot]], confirmed that Michel Ancel was currently working on several unannounced projects, as of March 2008.

In a 2008 interview with French video game magazine ''JVM'' (for ''Jeux Vidéo Magazine''), Ancel stated that a sequel to ''Beyond Good & Evil'' has been in pre-production by a small team for about a year, but they still await Ubisoft's approval before moving into full production.

On December 18, 2008, at the VGL event in Paris, Ancel stated that the game has been under development for a year and a half and that the development team have received total freedom from [[Ubisoft]], giving them the opportunity to make the game how they want.

On August 2009, shortly after GamesCom, [[Ubisoft]] officially put ''Beyond Good & Evil 2'' on hold, with the future of the game uncertain.

In January 2010, Geoffrey Sardin, CEO of Ubisoft France, confirmed that ''Beyond Good & Evil 2'' was still in production.

In late May 2010, rumours surfaced from French video game website Wootgaming that ''Beyond Good & Evil 2'' had been cancelled, and Ancel had left [[Ubisoft]] to found his own independent studio. Ubisoft soon issued denials of this rumour. However, friend of Ancel and game developer Nicolas Choukron left a comment on [http://www.facebook.com/pages/Michel-Ancel/45707703446 an unofficial Michel Ancel Facebook fanpage] saying that Ancel had formed a new studio which was a subsidiary of Ubisoft, as the Montpellier team was too large. Choukroun also revealed that Ancel and his new studio were working on a new ''Rayman'' game. This rumour has been proven correct, after Ubisoft unveiled a new Rayman project, entitled "Rayman Origins".

The '''Four Masks of Polokus''' are a group of magical masks that are hidden away in the Sanctuaries, except for the last one which was found by a Baby Globox. It becomes Rayman's goal to find these after Ly tells him about them when she is rescued in the [[Fairy Glade]], as a legend tells that when the masks reunite, [[Polokus]] will awaken from his long suspension. Each one is guarded by a Guardian, who is instructed by Polokus to ward off any intruders that attempt to steal them. Ly resembles a humanoid with elven ears, a very thin build, green lips that match the colour of her eyes, and short purple hair. Early concept art depicting her shows that she may have been originally an anthropomorphic cat, as she appeared to have cat ears and a non-human nose. In the Walks of Life and Power, she can be seen running on all fours.

Ly's personality is seldom touched on in ''Rayman 2'', but it is looked into in ''[[Rayman 2: Revolution|Revolution]]''. Ly is a warm, friendly sort of person who will root on her friends to the very end. Ly deeply admires [[Polokus]], and is very enthusiastic about him.

Ly the Fairy lives in a [[Ly's House|cottage]] in a clearing near the [[Eastern Plains]]. She also likes to rest atop a [[Ly's Mason|stone]] near [[Globox's House]] and in a [[Ly's Stone|cave]] in [[Rainbow Creek]]. Ly's favorite haunts include the [[Woods of Light]] and the [[Fairy Glade]].

It is unknown if Ly has any relation to [[Tily the Fairy]].

At one point, Ly was captured by [[Robo-Pirate|Robo-Pirates]] and imprisoned in the Fairy Glade.

Ly makes some brief appearances in the Gameboy Advance version of Rayman Raving Rabbids, where she gives Rayman a costume medallion everytime he defeats a boss. While the game uses the same sprites as Rayman 3 for the GBA, she has a new appearance in the cut-scenes, where the front of her hair is curlier than before, she has pale blue lipstick, and her suit reveals her shoulders.

*Ly was originally going to appear in ''[[Rayman M]]'', but was in the end replaced by [[Tily the Fairy]].
* There was a concept artwork for Rayman 3 which depicted Ly with a totally different appearance. She had no tail, but instead had huge dragonfly-like wings, her hair and lips were now phthalo blue instead of purple, and she wore a new outfit of the same colour, as well as a pair of elbow length gloves, while also having blue dots over her face and arms. This design was dropped from the final game, though it can be found as a printable in the [[Rayman 3 Print Studio]].
* Ly likes to juggle - several Rayman 2 images depicted her to have juggled with at least 3 red balls, and even Rayman's body parts.
* Ly is a playable character in the Rayman Revolution mini-game [[Dogfight|Missile Dogfight]].
* It is rumoured that Ly was possibly going to appear in Rayman Raving Rabbids before it became a party game.
* It is also rumoured that Ly could be Rayman's girlfriend because of two artwork pictures for Rayman 2.
* Ly's voice in Rayman 2/ DS is an echoing, girly voice. In Revolution, although Ly spoke English, you still hear the echoing voice in the background.
