The body itself appears to be no longer than Rayman's height, however he is never seen in full; only his head, part of his neck and occasionally the tip of his tail are ever actually visible, as he always partially submerged in the water of the Marshes. As a result, it is impossible to gauge just how long he might be; he could be quite short or incredibly long.

The Shadow Creatures is a name for two enemies that spawn throughout the game.

Variation of the Species
The first type of Shadow Creature that Rayman will encounter, is the smaller ones, resembling a black, furry head with small white eyes. They have one form of attack, where they fly towards Rayman, in a certain amount of time, before colapsing and disappearing. If they succeed to hit Rayman, he will lose a small amount of health and the Shadow Creature will die on impact. They can be heard before being seen, as they produce a sound, similar to a fly. However, they can be trouble, since they mostly appear at places where Rayman is either dangling or flying, making a single hit a possible death, considering there will be deadly water, lava or far heights if Rayman loses his grip.

The other type of Shadow Creatures, has a very different act, but looks rather similar to the smaller Shadow Creatures. They are the Caterpillars; long, wormlike creatures, made from a line of the smaller Shadow Creatures, yet only the front ball has eyes. They often move in packs, having a sertain route where they snake themselves around. They either jump from obstacle to obstacle or move on the ground. They attack Rayman by jumping on him, and does not die at the impact. They can also sometimes be hard to kill, as they move a lot and can be hard to hit. Similar to the Walking Shells, some have respawn areas, which makes them an enemy that can take its time to defeat.

Where to Find Them
The first Shadow Creatures to be encountered, is found in The Fairy Glade, at the small crater where Rayman has to climb a large tree and slide down a waterfall. However, many people never really see them, as it is possible to skip the combat. They can also be found later on in the Fairy Glade, at the second visit through the Echoing Caves and in the Cave of Bad Dreams/the Kingdom of the Dead (PS1 version), the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire, the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava, Beneath the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava and Tomb of the Ancients.
Caterpillar's are also seen in various levels in Rayman 3 (GBA), and unlike those in Rayman 2, after one hit they fall to the ground and can be picked up. However, this action serves no purpose. If they do not fall into lava, spikes etc. or get picked up and thrown into a hard surface or other creature, they can respawn themselves.

Origin and Leader
In Rayman 2: Revolution, there is a miniboss called Chenille, which appears in the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava/Beneath the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava (PS2 version). It resembles Shadow Creature, only red and splits into smaller Shadow Creatures when shot at. It is suggested that Chenille may be the Shadow Creatures leader, but such has never been confirmed.
Their origin is unknown, however many believe that they are one of the outcomes of Polukus' nighmares, and their presence in the Cave of Bad Dreams seems to imply this. Others believe that they are leftover spawns of Mr Dark's evil. It is not easy to tell, since no information is given throughout the game (or game manual).
Chenille
Boss Chenille (Kapousus Grosilus) is a giant shadow creature which serves as a miniboss beneath the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava in Rayman 2: Revolution.

Description
Boss Chenille is a large, reddish version of the common shadow creatures. It is much stronger than all other of them, as it can endure multiple hits. After being shot, it loses a limb, which will additionally attack Rayman. When Rayman shoots the attacking limb, it will die and split into additionally four of the small flying shadow creatures, which then will attack Rayman.
Until all limbs have been killed, Boss Chenille won't die. However the battle is finished quickly and Rayman can move on into the Sanctuary.

Role in Game
It is unknown why Boss Chenille appears in this particular level, but it is possible that it serves as a guardian to the entrance of the Sanctuary. It is possible that Razorbeard may have cut a deal with these creatures to stop Rayman from proceeding to the Third Mask. It could also be possible that Boss Chenille has made a home in the Sanctuary and is simply defending its territory.

Origin and race
Boss Chenille's purpose, apart from attacking Rayman at the entrance to the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava, remains unknown. Boss Chenille is a character that only appears once and no information about it can be found. Some suggest that Boss Chenille is the leader or mother of the shadow creatures, considering its outstanding appearance and strength. Some consider it possible that Chenille and the Shadow creatures originated as one of Polokus' nightmares in the Cave of Bad Dreams.
The rooms have three small lava pits and two laser gate doors; behind one them is an imprisoned Teensie and the other has the generator itself.
It is actually not necessary to defeat the Ninja in order to destroy the generator, however it can be done by shooting him as he stands near a pool of lava, causing him to fall in.
After the generator is destroyed, the Ninja disappears (if not already killed) and the lasers recede freeing the Teensie so that he can open a spiral door back to the Stone Circle.
Description
Zombie Henchmen have a faded, torn yellow vest and a rusted hook that has almsot fallen off and hangs limply from the pirate's arm. Their eyes are both black and lifeless, and one of their feet are missing, causing them to walk with a limp.
Their guns no longer work, so they instead attack Rayman by exhaling clouds of toxic gas.
When first encounters them they appear to be useless pile of wreckage. However, if Rayman shoots them or gets too close, the zombie will rise and begin attacking. After taking enough damage they will return to their crumpled state, but will inevitably rise again unless struck by a fully powered energy ball.
Appearance
Zombie Henchamn appear only in Rayman Revolution, and even then are quite rare. Two of them lie outside of the Pirate Factory, perhaps guarding it. Another two Zombie Henchman also appear when revisiting the Tomb of the Ancients.
Phase 1
This level takes place in a wide canyon, where Rayman is in pursuit by the Robo-Pirate army shooting bombs and shells at him. He has to escape them by running across a weak pier, climbing on nets, and jump whenever bits of it are blasted off.

Phase 2
Rayman enters a cave and follows another wooden pier, which leads him to a tower the Pirates built that sinks under rising water (reminiscent to the flooding levels in the original Rayman), while bombs and rolling kegs try to slow him down.

Phase 3
Rayman comes out somewhere else in the canyon, and is still in pursuit across wooden piers. There is then a cave with a bottomless pit, which Rayman has to glide through until he lands on another pier. At the end of this, he ends up on a pirate stronghold which was built over a cliff, still under attack by a Ninja Pirate and bombs. Once the pirate is defeated, Rayman can exit after freeing the Teensie.
Many changes have been applied to this level as far as level design is concerned. For a start, the segment from The Precipice in which Rayman has to climb up a sinking tower, is used as its first phase. The rest then returns to normal, with the exception of the passageway that previously lead to a hidden section of the Fairy Glade.
The end of the level features one of two Generators that Rayman must destroy in order to access the Pirate Factory, and consequently also features a Ninja Henchman which guards the generator. The other Generator is located in The Precipice.
Ninja Pirates appeared as a mini-boss two times in the original version of Rayman 2, one in the Precipice and another in the Prison Ship. They use a flame-thrower or the purple Robo-Pirate bullets. They are more dangerous and clever than all the other Robo-Pirates and strike like phantoms, making each one a master of stealth who can't be seen with the naked eye until they are right in front of (or behind) Rayman.

In Rayman 2: Revolution they are referred as the Generator Guardians of the two generators of the Pirate Factory and have unlimited heath. They fire the same bullets as the Green Robo-Pirates, but they are more accurate and faster. These pirates wear a red bandanna, have a black torso, have a cylinder for a head, a white eye and an eye patch.

In the PlayStation version, they appeared four times as mini-bosses in the Precipice, the Tomb of the Ancients, and Gloomy Island. Rayman also fights their leader, Ninjaws, in the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire.

The interesting thing in their appearance is that their hands have textures of tighted fists, although they have hook in left hand, growing up from the fingers, and they can shoot with the flames from their right hands, like normal henchmens - although it looks like they're shooting from their fingers.
Trivia
In Rayman Revolution, two Ninja Henchmen can be seen standing on either side of Razorbeard's chair in the Prison Ship cutscenes. However, after destroying the generators, these Ninjas are absent in the enxt cutscene, even though they aren't necessarily defeated during the battle.
This level allows the player to revisit a part of the Fairy Glade which was unreachable before (and where a Globox Crystal can be found in the Dreamcast version), via a secret passage, and introduces kegs which can be used as rocket to get across pools of acid.
Phase 1
This part of the area is a rainy part of a forest, and has places where Rayman has to locate and turn on four switches in order to access a door which a Red Robo-pirate goes into at the very beginning of the level. This is another of few areas in the game where plums grow, and this part of the level also involves swimming.

Phase 2
Rayman is now underground, and has to cross a body of green liquid by using a keg as a rocket several times until he comes out into a area of cliffs and sand similar of Whale Bay. The passage to the Fairy Glade is found in the underground area and is accessed by rocketing over there with a keg.
PlayStation 2 version
Many changes have been applied to this level as far as level design is concerned. For a start, the segment from The Precipice in which Rayman has to climb up a sinking tower, is used as its first phase. The rest then returns to normal, with the exception of the passageway that previously lead to a hidden section of the Fairy Glade.
The end of the level features one of two Generators that Rayman must destroy in order to access the Pirate Factory, and consequently also features a Ninja Henchman which guards the generator.

In the GBC adaptation, the Echoing Caves directly follow the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire, and this is where the third mask of Polokus is located. It resembles the original level much more than the rest of the game.
Description
Hoodbooms are a similar shape to Hoodblasters, but feature bright red and yellow colouring and a distinctive head, from which a pillar of smoke occasionally billows. Rather than the crude blunderbusses used by their Hoodblaster brethren, Hoodbooms arm themselves with explosive Molotov Cocktails made from plum juice which they can throw over great distances, and always carry a large number of them on a strap around their torso.
Hoodbooms usually stand in high places where they can't be reached without the aid of the Shock rocket. However, even grounded Hoodbooms are not easy pickings; Hoodbooms are tougher than Hoodblasters, and upon being hit get angry and throw a large number of cocktails at once, making it hard to avoid them.
Some Hoodbooms stand on stilts in order to avoid attacks, but are susceptible to being brought down by the Vortex Fist. These are known as stumblebooms.

Persoanality
Hoodbooms are somwhat maniacal; they can often be seen laughing crazily and juggling their explosives. Hoodbooms are also known to write poetry.
Description
The most fanatic soldiers in the war to free the Dark Lum Lord are the Hoodblasters, known for the mighty boomsticks they tout with tyrannical authority. These grifty troops are the grunts of the Hoodlum Army and feature some of the most scattershot shooting skills ever seen. While off-duty, Hoodblasters live for the cutthroat competition of frog shooting tournaments and playing cards.<br>
Hoodblasters are the most common enemies and Hoodlums in Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc and Rayman: Hoodlums' Revenge. They use two types of shotguns to attack Rayman and wear hats. Hoodblasters can be found in most places at Rayman's world at the Crossroads of Dreams. They wear orange clothings and their eyes are red or white. They appear in all the worlds, even in the last boss Reflux except in the Longest Shortcut.

Personality
Hoodblasters are the most insane and stupid enemies in the Hoodlum Army in Rayman 3 and Rayman: Hoodlums' Revenge.
They also have a tendency to shoot each other when trying to hit Rayman.
A Hoodboom is a type Hoodlum from Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc and remakes.
Description
Hoodbooms are a similar shape to Hoodblasters, but feature bright red and yellow colouring and a sistinctive head, from which a pillar of smoke occasionally billows.
However, despite outward appearances,Hoodbooms are considered to be the most intellegent of all Hoodlums, as they are the only ones able to count to three. Hoodbooms are also known to write poetry.
Appearances
Hoodbooms first appear in Rayman 3, in the level Clearleaf Forest. They then feature in every folling level, except the longest Shortcut in which there are no enemies.
They also appear in some of the minigames, most notably Sentinel in which the player controls a Hoodboom guarding a tower from Knaaren with his explosives.

A Hoodlum is a member of an enemy species that is introduced in Rayman 3. It is the product of a cluster of Black Lums that had stripped the fur of several animals and created all sorts of rags to hide their inner contents. They are often found sporting an assortment of weapons, especially shotguns, that shoot slow moving fireballs.

Personality
The Hoodlums are very insane and stupid. Despite this, they proved a tough enemy for Rayman. They were desperate to kill Rayman by all means, but because of Rayman's strong skill, they failed miserably.
*The Hoodlums had many videos in which they try to kill Rayman. There are some where the Hoodlums are training, and also the Wanna Kick Rayman? videos, in which the Hoodlums use many animals, pretending that they are Rayman, to try out there varied and crazy ways to kill him.

The Robo-Pirates (or Henchmen) are an army of robotic pirtaes that invaded Rayman's world in Rayman 2. They all willingly serve Admiral Razorbeard, but do seem to have their own personalities.
Appearance
The Majority of the Henchmen are largely the same. Their head is like a metallic skull with an earring on one side. also, one eye is completely black, as if they have an eyepatch. their torso basically consists of a cube-like shape with a coloured vest on it. the vest is slightly torn at the bottom.
They have two arms, both of which end in a cylinder-like structure. on one side, the cylinder is hollow - this is where they fire their bullets from. the other side has a large hook, which they often use for swiping at close range.
Their two legs have striped pants that are similar to the vest in that they are torn at the bottom. their feet are basically black shoes with goldish buckles on them.
Models
there are many different pirate models, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
Basic Henchman
The basic Henchman are the standard model, that come in different colours and have different weapons, but all look largely the same. They are sometimes appear in the level by parachuting or popping out of the ground with a drill. More than often they are found sleeping on the job.
Green
these have a green vest and green and white striped pants. They have very little health and generally just stand still and slowly shoot, however they sometimes throw powder kegs.
In the PS1 version, however, they have lots of life, making them difficult to kill, but only ever throw kegs.
Purple
These are much like the Green Henchmen, except purple instead of green, and they have much more life.. their bulets are often larger, and they have a habit of firing multiple bullets in quick succession. They move around a bit, sometimes jumping to dodge Rayman's attacks. In the Ps1 version, their bulets are the same but are always fired in sets of three, in between running back and forth. they have more life in the Ps1 version, but not as much as the Green Henchmen.
Yellow
These are yellow instead of Green or Purple and have much more life, but move very little. instead ofbullets, they lauch streams of fire, which move very quickly, and also throw cannonballs which start a fire where they land which causes damage when Rayman walks on it.
They do not appear in the PS1 version, but are instead replaced with orange henchmen. the orange ones have more life, and move around alot via their drills. they don't throw cannonballs, and instead of a fire stream, just shoot large fireballs.
Red
These are the best of the standard henchmen, and appear with red vests and red and yellow stripes on their pants. They fire missiles which can home in on Rayman, but can be destroyed by rayman's attacks. Red Henchmen have lots of life. although, in the Ps1 version, their rank is inverted and they have very little life and fire only basic shots.
Two Red Henchmen are used as the bodyguards in front of Razorbeard's cabin, even in the Ps1 version. Two of them (probably the same two) also carry globox to his prison cell in the opening movie. later on, one of the bodyguards puts his foot out to trip Razorbeard's lackey, proving that they might have a personality.
Zombie Henchmen
These are old pirates that have been wrecked and rusted, but still walk. their vests are a pale, rotted yellow, and one of their feet are missing. also, their hook hangs limply off the arm and both eyes are black. As a result of their state, they don't move around very well, and walk in a zombie-like manner.
Instead of shooting from their arm, the Zombie henchmen breath a green poisonous gas towards Rayman. zombie henchmen are very difficult to destroy, as when they appear to be dead, they get up agin a few seconds later.
Ninjaws and the Ninja Henchmen
The Ninja Pirates are very similar to the others, but have a few notable appearance traits and abilities that make them very different. Ninjaws is seemingly the elite of them, who at one point returns to Razorbeard's cabin claiming to have captured 5000 slaves.
They are more or less completely black and look a little less square. their heads are very different. instead of a skull, it appears as a tall cylinder topped with a red bandanna.
Ninja Henchmen have lots of life, and have the ability to vanish and then reappear somewhere else in a cloud of dust. they either appear right near rayman and try to hook rayman, or appear standing back more and try to shoot him. sometimes they teleport quickly to different places around Rayman while shooting, surrounding him with bullets. their weakness is that their hooks are very heavy. if they miss, it gives Rayman an opportunity to attack.
In Rayman Revolution, two can be seen in Razorbeard's cabin. later on, they defend the two generators that power the shield at the pirate factory, and once the generators are destroyed, the ninja henchmen are no longer seen next to Razorbeard.
Gorilla Pirate
The Gorilla Pirates are so named because of their similarities to an ape or gorilla, in both appearance and behaviour. they are very bulky, and where a blue and white striped shirt. they can not be hurt by Rayman's attacks, so usually the idea is to lure them off a cliff or ledge, or to throw a plum at their head and use it as a platform.
Barrel Pirate
The barrel pirates basically consist of a large barrel with legs, a cannon on top, and a slit with eyes inside. sometimes theyare found disguising themselves, as the slit can be closed and the legs can be withdrawn. in this state, they just look like a barrel and a cannon.
Their attacks differ from version to version. on the ps1, they simply fire sets of three large balls of electricity. in revolution however, they fire blts of lightning that can only be avoided by hiding behind something. in revolution, they also lauch cannonballs, similar to those used by the yellow henchmen, only it uses a poisonous gas instead of fire. but one thing that is consisitent in each version is their large amount of life.
Razorbeard's Lackey
This is the pirate who carries out most of Razorbeard's orders. he is unarmed, although his arms are very similar to a henchman's, except with ordinary hands. his body consists of two rough cubes, the lower one larger than the top. the lower one has the legs sticking out of it and a pair of green pants. His head is a basic cube with an opening mouth and a red bandanna.
Although he has no weapons, he still causes Rayman some trouble. carrying out razorbeard's orders, he drives the warships which pursue Rayman. he also controls Clark at one point via remote control, as well as a giant bird-like robot called the dinosaur in the same manner. also, in revolution, he controls a hemispherical vehicle called the Biditank.
Pirate Vehicles
The Warship/s
The Warships are flying ships that attack Rayman in the bayou, the canopy and the precipice. They ususally fire slow moving bombs that move about like a helicopter, and can be easily destroyed by Rayman's attacks. they also fire cannonballs, but these are not usually aimed at rayman, but instead at platforms to blow them away. they also lauch walking shells that run towards rayman upo landing.
The Dinosaur
The Dinosaur is a giant bird-like robot controlled by Razorbeard's lackey. it is only ever named in the Ps1 version, but does appear in the others. It often just pecks the ground like a chicken. but every now and then, it jumps really high and upon landing, causes objects to bounce off the ground. also, when Rayman is on the shell, it chases after him, and runs faster than the shell when going in a straight line, but lacks agility. The Dinosaur is not destroyed, although in the ps1 version it runs out of fuel.
The Biditank
This is a tank-like vehicle that takes the shape of a hemisphere i.e half a shere. it is driven by Razorbeard's lackey in the Pirate factory in rayman revolution, and travels on wheels located underneath it. it fires the same kind of propellor bombs as the warship as well as a machinegun-like weapon. also, it can use an attack like that of the barrel pirates, at which point rayman must hide behind something. it can only be damaged by activating a powerful gun and using it to fire at the tank.
