The Tomb of the Ancients is a location in the Glade of Dreams and a level in Rayman 2: The Great Escape.

The Tomb of the Ancients is an eerie, haunted location which appears as a mixture of graveyard, cave, swamp and sewer. The green, poisonous water which flows throughout the Tomb is filled piranhas and must be navigated by crossing floating wooden barrels. The walls and ground are made of dark, greenish rock, decorated by engravings of skulls and coffins and illuminated by wall-hung torches. The sky is dark and cloudy, lit only by one of the world's two moons. The Tomb is infested by creatures such as piranhas, spiders, and very many Zombie Chickens, one of which represents the level as a hologram in the Hall of Doors.

In Rayman 2, the Pirates use this place as one of their strongholds, and many signs of their occupation, such as their haphazard wooden constructions, are visible.

Original version
Phase 1
As the player enters the level for the first time, a short cutscene is played. Razorbeard's lackey tells Razorbeard that Rayman has retrieved the Third Mask. A furious Razorbeard warns him to make sure Rayman doesn't get the next one. Rayman emerges from a Magic Spiral Door on to some stairs. Once he climbs down he encounters a Robo-Pirate sign saying "Clark was captured here before being brought to technical checkup." After hitting a switch that activates a door, Rayman is chased by a spider through a tomb until he reaches a few platforms sticking out of the water. Climbing on to these platforms, he reaches a passage with three possible routes. The left one leads to another platforming section where he has to avoid a Henchman 800, a spider and a disembodied arm similar to the one encountered in The Cave of Bad Dreams. The right one is a graveyard with more disembodied arms and henchmen. Both of these contain switches that must be activated in order to progress further. Once the switches have been activated, Rayman must return to the passage and go forward, jumping across platforms and avoiding Piranhas. Once he reaches the uppermost platform he has to jump down a hole to get to the next stage.

The last platforming part features a secret passage: Rayman can jump to the left instead of down the hole and float using his helicopter. This way he finds a secret passage where he will find the 1000th Yellow Lum necessary to obtain 100.0% completion of the game - if this lum remains uncollected, the game will be 99.9% complete, and even after it is collected the game screen will only display a total of 999 lums.

How to get secret 1000th Lum (at 4:00).

Phase 2
Rayman finds himself in front of a gate. After hitting the nearby cogs to open it, Rayman jumps down onto a floating barrel. For the rest of the phase, he rides floating barrels and maneuvers up spiderwebs to reach the next barrel, avoiding electrical fences, Zombie Chickens and Henchmen 800s.

Phase 3
After executing another platform jump, Rayman once again rides a floating barrel. At the end of this phase, he must avoid a pirate throwing kegs at him from higher ground and then climb up into the pirate stronghold and defeat him. Once the pirate is defeated, a Purple Lum will appear. Rayman must use this Purple Lum to reach a net and climb up towards the next phase.

Phase 4
The final phase begins with Rayman running across a narrow stretch of ground with polluted water towards the left, before reaching a door with a small pirate sign saying "Technical check-up" adjacent to it. After opening the door, a small cutscene plays where Rayman and Clark are initially overjoyed to find each other before it is revealed that Clark has had a controlling device implanted on his back and is being controlled by Razorbeard's lackey from another room.

A boss fight ensues in which Rayman must activate a laser by hitting three switches, then tricking Clark into tripping over it in order to attack the controlling device. Once the controlling device is destroyed, Clark is restored to his normal self. Rayman climbs onto Clark's back to destroy the final cage, revealing a Teensie who then opens a Magic Spiral Door. Rayman is then transported back to the Hall of Doors.
The first phase of the original is completely removed. The rest of the level is also edited in the form of were the start and end of each phase occurs. Overall, however, the layout is the same, and the level still concludes with the Clark "battle".
PlayStation 2 version
In this version, Rayman discovers a treasure chest in the Technical check-up after rescuing Clark, and upon opening it finds the Lums Radar, a magnet-like device that points the way to nearby Yellow Lums. Also, if Rayman has destroyed any Robo-Pirates, and revisits the place, they will be replaced by Zombie Pirates.

Also, whilst no real reason was ever given as to why Rayman went to the tomb in the other versions, he is specifically instructed to go here to rescue Clark in this version. In the other versions, Rayman appeared to stumble across Clark souly by chance, and was simply passing through.
A Silver Lum is a very special kind of Lum that debuted in Rayman 2: The Great Escape. In that game, they are created by Ly the fairy, and endow Rayman with brand new powers or upgrade powers he already has. They are the biggest lums, and the only ones without eyes or wings (although in Rayman 3 the Red Lums are shown in this state as well).

In Rayman 2, Rayman cannot find Silver lums by himself; Ly gives him them when she has collected enough energy. However, in the Gameboy Advance version of Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc, silver Lums can be collected throughout the game, and collecting 10 rewards Rayman with an extra life.

* This article is about the pirates from Rayman 2. For the pirates from Rayman, see Pirate (Picture City).

"Rayman, look what the Pirates have done to our world... A planet of anguish and pain, haunted by evil. A dark place, teeming with fierce monsters." - Ly the Fairy, Rayman 2

The Robo-Pirates (or Henchmen) are an army of robotic pirates that invaded Rayman's world in Rayman 2. They all willingly serve Admiral Razorbeard, but do seem to have their own personalities.
Appearance
The majority of the Henchmen are largely the same. Their head is like a metallic skull with an earring on one side, with a face like the front of a steam engine. Also, one eye is completely black, as if they have an eye patch. Their torso basically consists of a cube-like shape with a coloured vest on it. The vest is slightly torn at the bottom. They have two arms, both of which end in a cylinder-like structure. On one side, the cylinder is hollow - this is where they fire their bullets from. The other side has a large hook, which they often use for swiping at close range. Their two legs have striped pants that are similar to the vest in that they are torn at the bottom. Their feet are basically black shoes with gold-ish buckles on them.

Models
There are many different pirate models, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Basic Henchman
The basic Henchman are the standard model, that come in different colours and have different weapons, but all look largely the same. They sometimes appear in the level by parachuting or drilling up through the ground. More than often they are found sleeping on the job. The Henchman 800s are the most common of the Basic Henchman.

Green
These have a green vest with green and white striped pants. They have very little health and generally just stand still and slowly shoot, however they sometimes throw powder kegs. In the PlayStation version, however, they have a lot of life, making them difficult to kill, but only ever throw kegs.

Blue
They're the same as the Green Henchmen, except blue instead of green and has a little life. They appeared in Rayman 2 and Rayman DS at the Fairy Glade, the Sanctuary of Water and Ice or the Lost Island, and the Menhir Hills. The Blue Henchmen are the uncommon Henchman 800s. The Blue Henchmen never appeared in Rayman Revolution.

Purple
These are much like the Green Henchmen, except purple instead of green, and they have much more life, and have brass hooks. Their bullets are often larger, and they have a habit of firing multiple bullets in quick succession. They move around a bit, sometimes jumping to dodge Rayman's attacks. In the PlayStation version, their bullets are the same but are always fired in sets of three, in between running back and forth. They have more life in the PlayStation version, but not as much as the Green Henchmen. They're given a similar appearence to the Blue Henchmen.

Yellow/Orange
The Yellow Henchmen have much more life, but move very little. Instead of bullets, they launch streams of fire, which move very quickly, and also throw cannonballs which start a fire where they land which causes damage when Rayman walks on it. Yellow Henchmen do not appear in the PlayStation version, but are instead replaced with Orange Henchmen. The Orange Henchmen have more life, and move around a lot via their drills. They don't throw cannonballs, and instead of a fire stream, just shoot large fireballs.

Red
These Henchmen, also known as Red Rum, are the strongest of the standard Henchmen, and appear with red vests and red and yellow stripes on their pants. In the original Rayman 2, they are the strongest Henchmen, but vary in some ways. Some of them have more health then all other henchmen and fire large cannonballs, usually three at a time. Other times they shoot the normal size cannonballs and drill through the ground, hoping to hit Rayman. One interesting feature of these Pirates is that they can instantly kill Rayman if he steps on the place from which they drill upwards from underground (go to the External Links to see this). In Rayman Revolution, they fire missiles which can home in on Rayman, but these can be destroyed by Rayman's shots. Red Henchmen have lots of life. However, in the PlayStation version, their rank is inverted and they have very little life and fire only basic shots. Two Red Henchmen are used as the bodyguards in front of Razorbeard's cabin, even in the PlayStation version. Two of them (likely the same two) also carry Globox to his prison cell in the opening movie. Later on, one of the bodyguards puts his foot out to trip Razorbeard's lackey, indicating that they may have some kind of personality, or at least a sense of humour.

Henchman 1000
Main article: Henchman 1000<br>

An older version of the Henchman 800. These types of robo-pirates are similar to the newer ones, but with a retro design and a fake mustasche. They have a hand on their right arm instead of a hook, and they are wearing a paper hat. These pirates usually speak Spanish (when they talk). They have only been seen once, as an unlockable character in Rayman M. The Henchman 1000 main theme is country rock.

Zombie Henchmen
Main article: Zombie Henchman<br>

These are old pirates that have been wrecked and rusted, but still walk. Their vests are a pale, rotted yellow, and one of their feet are missing. In additino, their hook hangs limply off the arm and both eyes are black. As a result of their state, they don't move around very well, and walk in a zombie-like manner. Instead of shooting from their arm, the Zombie Henchmen breathes a green poisonous gas towards Rayman. Zombie Henchmen are very difficult to destroy, as when they appear to be dead, they get up again a few moments later. These are found in Rayman 2: Revolution.

Ninja Henchmen and Ninjaws
Main article: Ninja Pirate and Ninjaws<br>

The Ninja Pirates are very similar to the others, but have a few notable appearance traits and abilities that make them very different. Ninjaws, while identical to the others, is seemingly the elite of them, and at one point returns to Razorbeard's cabin claiming to have captured 5000 slaves. In the PlayStation version of Rayman 2, Rayman battles Ninjaws for the Second Mask. Ninja Henchmen are more or less completely black and look a little less square. Their heads appear very different. Instead of a skull, it appears as a tall cylinder topped with a red bandana and gold hook on the right arm. Ninja Henchmen have a lot of life, and have the ability to vanish and then reappear somewhere else in a cloud of dust. They either appear near Rayman and try to hook Rayman, or appear standing back more and try to shoot him. Sometimes they will teleport quickly to different places around Rayman while shooting, surrounding him with bullets. Their weakness is that their hooks are very heavy. If they miss, it gives Rayman an opportunity to attack. In Rayman 2: Revolution, two can be seen in Razorbeard's cabin. Later on, they defend the two generators that power the shield at the Pirate Factory, and once the generators are destroyed, the Ninja Henchmen are no longer seen next to Razorbeard.

Gorilla Pirate
Main article: Ape Pirate<br>

The Gorilla Pirates are so named because of their similarities to an ape or gorilla, in both appearance and behaviour. they are very bulky, and where a blue and white striped shirt. they can not be hurt by Rayman's attacks, so usually the idea is to lure them off a cliff or ledge, or to throw a plum at their head and use it as a platform.

Barrel Pirate
Main article: Barrel Pirate<br>

The Barrel Pirates consist of a large barrel with legs, a cannon on top, and a slit with eyes inside. Sometimes they are found disguising themselves, as the slit can be closed and the legs can be withdrawn. In this state, they just look like a barrel and a cannon. Their attacks differ from version to version. On the PlayStation version, they simply fire sets of three large balls of electricity. In Rayman 2: Revolution however, they fire bolts of lightning that can only be avoided by hiding behind something. In this version, they also launch cannonballs, similar to those used by the yellow henchmen, only it uses a poisonous gas instead of fire. One thing that is consistent in each version is their large amount of life.

Razorbeard's lackey
Main article: Admiral Razorbeard's lackey<br>

This is the pirate who carries out many of Razorbeard's orders. He is unarmed, although his arms are very similar to a typical Henchman's, except with ordinary hands. his body consists of two rough cubes, the lower one larger than the top. The lower one has the legs sticking out of it and a pair of green pants. His head is a basic cube with an opening mouth and a red bandana. Although he has no weapons, he still causes Rayman trouble. Carrying out Razorbeard's orders, he drives the Warships which pursue Rayman. He also controls Clark at one point via remote control, as well as a giant bird-like robot called the Robot Dinosaur in the same manner. Also, in Rayman Revolution, he controls a hemispherical vehicle called the Boss Biditank.

Pirate Vehicles
The Warships
Warships are flying Pirate ships that attack Rayman in the Bayou, the Canopy, and the Precipice (and the Echoing Caves in Revolution). They usually fire slow-moving homing bombs that move about like a helicopter, and can be easily destroyed by Rayman's attacks. They also fire cannonballs, but these are not usually aimed at Rayman, but instead at platforms to blow them away. They may also launch Walking Shells that run towards Rayman upon landing.

The Robot Dinosaur
The Robot Dinosaur is a giant bird-like robot controlled by Razorbeard's lackey. It is only ever named in the PlayStation version, but also appear in the others. The Grand Minimus tells Rayman that this Robotic titan was dropped on the Iron Mountains (also known as Gloomy Island) by the Pirates, to search for the fourth and final mask. It is often to be seen walking around and pecking at the ground like a chicken; it is possible that it is searching for the Fourth Mask in the soil. The Robot Dinosaur is notable for periodically jumping high, and upon landing, causing objects to bounce off the ground. Also, when Rayman is on the Walking Shell, it chases after him, and runs faster than the shell when going in a straight line, but lacks agility. The Robot Dinosaur is not destroyed, although in the PlayStation version it runs out of fuel.

The Boss Biditank
This is a tank-like vehicle that takes the shape of a hemisphere. It is driven by Razorbeard's lackey in the Pirate Factory in Rayman Revolution, and travels on wheels located on its underside. It fires the same type of propeller bombs as the Warships, as well as a machine gun-like weapon. Also, it can use an attack like that of the Barrel Pirates, at which point Rayman must hide behind something to avoid being damaged. It can only be damaged by activating a powerful gun and using it to fire at the tank.

Trivia
* The Red Henchmen were sometimes called Red Rum.
* Some Henchmen are stupid to fall off a cliff in the Eastern Plains of the Minisaurus Plains by luring one of them to a cliff.

They have only been seen once, as an unlockable character in Rayman M. The Henchman 1000 main theme is country rock.

Zombie Henchmen

For convenience, the regulating Teensie may opt for an additional Magic Spiral Door to link multiple Teensie Circles together.

Teensies also use the Teensie Circles as meeting places, where they may share stories and recent news with one another. In times of need, Teensies utilize Teensie Circles as military headquarters. Wherever there is a Teensie Circle, a Magic Well is sure to be nearby.
Whenever Rayman completes a level, he is warped back to the nearest Teensie Circle.
” —Rayman 2 manual (PC version)

Caterpillars are a common type of minor enemy encountered by Rayman on his adventures, most notably during the events of Rayman 2: The Great Escape. It is unknown whether they have any connection to the Squabs, another species of caterpillar found in Rayman's world, or whether either species of caterpillar bears any connection to the popolopoï‎ or the tribelles, two species of butterfly native to the Glade of Dreams.

Description
Caterpillars are dark, shadowy creatures which appear to be made of smoke or some kind of gas; their shape is loosely based upon that of their real-world counterparts. All caterpillars have malevolent-looking white eyes, though occasionally a caterpillar of the second type is found to have yellow eyes instead. They are capable of at least limited flight, and they will attack Rayman upon sight. In the time leading up to the events of Rayman 2, caterpillars began to proliferate as a result of the interference of the Robo-Pirates, possibly as a result of their pollution or their destruction of the Heart of the World.

Two distinct types of caterpillar are known to exist. The first type that Rayman will encounter are the smaller ones. These appear as small, round puffs of darkness; their bodies are composed of only one segment. In short, they resemble the disembodies heads of the second type of caterpillar. These caterpillars are constantly in flight, but never more than a short way above the ground. They can be heard before being seen, as they produce a high-pitched buzzing noise, similar to that of a fly. They attack by flying directly towards Rayman; if they succeed in hitting him, he will lose a small amount of health and the caterpillar will die upon impact. However, their tendency to appear in precarious places (such as above water or lava) can make them very dangerous for Rayman, as their weak attacks are still enough to make him lose his balance.

The second type of caterpillars are the large ones. These are similar to the first type, but they are much longer; their bodies are composed of multiple segments joined together in a line, like a real-world caterpillar, whereas the small ones' bodies contain only a single segment. Like the small caterpillars, they often move in packs; each caterpillar has a unique route which it patrols endlessly, unless it catches sight of an intruder. The large caterpillars do not appear to be able to fly as well as the small ones; their movements are more like leaps and bounds. They attack Rayman by jumping on him, and do not die upon impact, but like the small ones they cannot survive a single shot from Rayman's magic fist. They are sometimes found emerging from cracks in stone walls or floors; in these cases, any caterpillar killed by Rayman is quickly replaced by another.

The large caterpillars are also seen in various levels in the Game Boy Advance version of Rayman 3; unlike those in Rayman 2, these caterpillars do not die when hit, but rather, their eyes turn red, and they shrink to the size of a small caterpillar and fall to the ground, where they remain, trembling. They can then be picked up by Rayman as if they were kegs, Magic Spheres or plums; however, this action serves no practical purpose within the game. These caterpillars get killed and splattered if they fall into lava or spikes, or if Rayman picks them up and throws them into a hard surface or other creature. If left lying on the ground for a while, they can recover themselves.

Boss Chenille
In Rayman Revolution, the PlayStation 2 remake of Rayman 2, a new boss named Boss Chenille is introduced. Boss Chenille is found in a room in the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava (whose name is switched with that of Beneath the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava in this version). Boss Chenille is summoned by Rayman performing a raindance on what looks like a greyish version of one of the Magic Spheres' bases. When this is done, it emits a beam of light towards another such base. When Rayman shoots it, it too emits a beam of light towards another base. After shooting several more bases, the beam of light has finished its circumnavigation of the chamber; a door opens, and Boss Chenille enters. The first clue as to Boss Chenille's identity is its name; Chenille is the French word for Caterpillar, while the name Boss implies that it may possibly be their leader. Boss Chenille looks just like one of the large caterpillars, but with some significant differences: whereas they are a purplish-black in colour, Boss Chenille is blood-red; Boss Chenille is also somewhat larger. When Rayman strikes Boss Chenille with his magic fist, its health meter decreases, and a caterpillar splits away from its body. Boss Chenille spawns both small and large caterpillars in this fashion; these too must all be defeated in order to fully deplete Boss Chenille's health. As the battle wears on, the segments of Boss Chenille's body slowly disappear; by the end, it resembles an enormous red version of one of the small caterpillars. When this final form is defeated, Boss Chenille vanishes like any other cat
erpillar.

The manner in which Boss Chenille spawns normal caterpillars from its body during the battle has led to speculation that it may be the progenitor or ‘mother’ of the entire caterpillar species, in addition to the speculation that it is their leader.
Bzzit is a character who appears in a number of games in the Rayman series. He is a giant mosquito, but he is much weaker than his stronger counterpart, Moskito, whom he is often mistaken for by players because he shares his appearance and colours in most versions of the original Rayman game.

Appearances
Rayman
Bzzit first appeared unnamed in the original Rayman, where he was first encountered in Anguish Lagoon. Back then, he was the first mini-boss, but once he was defeated by Rayman, he collapsed and started sobbing. Rayman stopped his victory dance to comfort him, and they soon became friends fast, helping him cross the rest of the lagoon by offering a ride on his back. In the Atari Jaguar version of the game, he could shoot balls of energy with his proboscis.

As a boss, Bzzit is always airborne, but has less than half of the health points Moskito has, making him less than half as resistant to Rayman's attacks and therefore weaker. He attacks by swooping horizontally at Rayman, sometimes at his head level (where Rayman can hit him head on) or near the ground (he can hit him by throwing his telescopic fist and then ducking immediately); and by stinging him with his proboscis. He also tries to dodge Rayman's attacks using his small wings, and every time he it hit, he flies high in the air and out of view for a brief moment before attacking.

Rayman 2
In the original version of Rayman 2, mosquitoes, members of Bzzit's species, make brief appearances in the Woods of Light. In the Sega Dreamcast version of Rayman 2, these mosquitoes also appear in many other levels throughout the game. In Rayman Revolution, Bzzit himself makes a reappearance. He was first mentioned by a baby Globox in the Minisaurus Plain, who tells Rayman that the Pirates have captured his friend Bzzit; later, the Teensies at the Teensie Circle in the Minisaurus Plain told Rayman that Bzzit was being held prisoner in a forcefield (akin to the one Ly was held prisoner in at the Fairy Glade) in the Bayou. He was the only one who could ferry someone from the Pier to the Lost Island (the location of the Sanctuary of Water and Ice in this version), so when Rayman saved him, Bzzit gladly offered him to hop into his boat and took him to the island in search of the first of Polokus's masks.

In this game, Bzzit has four insect-like legs instead of floating hands and feet as he had in the previous game, and is noticeably smaller than before.

Other Rayman games
Several mosquitoes make an appearance in the Rayman 3 minigame 2D Madness, though Bzzit is not among them.
Minisaurus are slow-moving dinosaur-like creatures who like travelling with their family. They only appear in Rayman Revolution on the Minisaurus Plains level. According to a baby Globox, he owns them, but the Pirates' interference in the world, such as the destruction of the Heart, has driven them mad, and now they eat the butterflies. You can daze them, but they can bite you back. Minisaurus are larger versions of Denys, creatures found in cages in the PlayStation version of Rayman 2. It is possible to lure a Minisaurus off of a cliff. First, alert their attention, then run towards the cliff near the beach and jump off. If you're lucky, the Minisaurus will jump off the cliff along with you. They will continue hugging the cliff wall and wade into the piranha-infested water. They will not appear back on the cliff when you jump back up. However, if you die or exit the level, the Minisaurus will reappear.
