Tonic Trouble is a video game developed by Ubi Soft Montréal, initially to test the 3D engine used by Rayman 2. It is notable for featuring limbless characters akin to the earlier Rayman games although it is actually set on Earth; in fact, one of these characters makes a cameo appearance at a very late point in Rayman 2, and Rayman makes a cameo in Tonic Troubles end credits. It was released for the Nintendo 64, PC and Game Boy Color (only in Europe) in 1999.

Plot
The game follows the story of Ed, a small and clumsy member of a purple limbless alien species, who works as a janitor during a voyage through space, on a craft called The Albatross. Ed is voiced by David Gasman, who also voices Rayman in Rayman 2, Rayman M, Rayman 3, and Rayman in the Phantom Show. During one shift, Ed comes across a strange can and drinks its contents. He doesn't like the taste, and spits the fluid out, causing any object it came to contact with to come to life, forcing him to throw it down a chute which sends it falling to Earth. The fluid's effects on the Earth's environment cause chaos, and the can falls into the hands of a Viking called Grogh, who becomes more powerful upon drinking from it.

Ed faces a trial in court, and as punishment for his carelessness, he is sent to Earth to clean up the mess. During his journey there, his own spaceship malfunctions and ends up crashing into a snowy mountainous area on Earth, which is now roaming with mutant killer vegetables and balloon sheep. Eventually he meets a doctor and his daughter, Suzy, who offer to help him by giving him weapons and powers in exchange for small things such as springs and propellers used by the Doc to build a machine.

Gameplay
The game sticks very closely to the formula found in the first Rayman game. Much like in the original Rayman game, Ed starts off defenseless and acquires new weapons and powerups throughout the game. Also, each stage includes 6 objects that Ed must collect in order to properly complete it. The main difference between the two games is that Tonic Trouble is in 3D, and some stages in the game focus more on puzzle solving than platforming. In addition to the 6 objects in each stage, Ed must also collect 120 antidotes hidden throughout the levels and Southern Plains hub map in order to access the Magic Mushrooms Lair late in the game (akin to needing all of the Electoons to enter Candy Château in the original Rayman game).
Soundtrack
The music in Tonic Trouble was composed by Éric Chevalier who also composed the soundtrack for Rayman 2. The soundtrack is very eclectic and experimental in nature. In one portion of the game bagpipes, a rhythm guitar, a beat boxer and a synthesizer can be heard at the same time. The music was intended to be interactive and would change depending on the mood Ed was feeling in each room, but in the final version of the PC game each track is a long suite of sorts.

Ed also has his own short jingle "theme" that can be heard in some of the tracks that sounds almost like the inverse of Rayman's theme from Rayman 2.

Beta version
Early in 1999, a beta version of Tonic Trouble called "Tonic Trouble Special Edition" was released with some computers. The game is very different to its final counterparts on the PC and Nintendo 64, featuring different level designs and, in some cases, music. Ed controls very differently and feels heavier due to a less-precise jump and tank-like controls. Unlike in the final PC version, there are no subtitles, and some characters have different voice actors. The beta version also has different names for some of the stages, and features a world map that can be brought up to check the player's progress on the collectibles in each stage.

Beta-exclusive enemies
Trigger Happy Henchman
This henchman is the first one that the player will find in the Canyon. He will repeatedly spray a shower of bullets in Ed's direction, and occasionally take a short break from firing. Takes three hits from the stick or one hit from the blowdart pipe to be defeated.
Flamethrower Henchman
This henchman can be found in the Canyon guarding a full health powerup. While flying with his propeller hat he does not try to harm Ed, but when he lands he will fire a long stream of fire in Ed's general direction. Takes three hits from the stick or one hit from the blowdart pipe to be defeated.
Mushroom Caps
The UFO-like mushroom caps hover over long stretches of lava in the Canyon. If they spot Ed they will fly to wherever he was standing when spotted and explode. If Ed moves out of the way while a mushroom cap is flying towards him, he can avoid the cap's attack entirely. Mushroom Caps cannot be harmed.

The Grape
The Grape appears during the end credits of the beta version of Tonic Trouble. It can be seen rearranging itself into various shapes such as a tank or a cube. One of the Grape's grapes has a heart on it. It is currently unknown if this enemy actually shows up in a stage of the beta version.
The Summit Beyond the Clouds, also known as the Summit of Fury, is a snow-based level in Rayman 3, and the last in which the player uses the funkyboard. After crossing the Looming Sea on a boat and passing through the dangers of the snowy area, Rayman finds out that Globox is frozen into an ice cube and he must use the funkyboard to race him down the Summit and get to the Hoodlum Headquarters. The ski slope level with the funkyboard looks similar to the Ski Slope level in Tonic Trouble.

As a level
Stage 1 - The ship
This level carries on directly from the Longest Shortcut, where Rayman and Globox acquire a boat from the three Teensie doctors. The first stage involves the duo attempting to reach the titular summit itself via the Looming Sea. Globox steers the ship on a course to the icy landscape, however the Dark Lum Lord has sent giant, mechanical fish to attack the ship. Rayman must utilise the ship's cannons to blast away the fish before they do the same to the heroes. Eventually the heroes fight off the invasion, and Rayman departs from the ship once they reach the mountain. (What happens to Globox is unknown, as he cannot be seen on the ship when Rayman leaves.)

The score thresholds for this stage are 900 points for 25% (2 stars), 1800 points for 50% (3 stars), 2700 points for 75% (4 stars) and 3600 points for 100% (5 stars).

Secret area
Over the side of the boat (off the port quarter) is a small crevice containing a few gems.
</gallery>

Stage 2 - The climb
Rayman has to climb up the side of the mountain whilst being bombarded by Spinneroos and giant snowballs. Eventually, the snowballs stop as he rescues the first of the Tufkins as they grant Rayman the LockJaw. Using it will help him reach a small arena where he has to fight some Hoodmonger Officers and a pair of Lavomatrixes before continuing on to several passages filled with Hoodlums. Eventually, after he defeats a group of a Stumbleboom and Hoodmonger, he helicopters down to a Hoodmonger Officer that contains the Heavy Metal Fist. Using it to destroy a barricade will open the path that opens out to a frozen waterfall, dotted with various pipes. To escape the area, Rayman must survive a passage behind the waterfall filled with several kinds of Hoodlums, some carried in by Hoodloon forces. Once all are defeated, the Throttle Copter appears, for use to save another group of Tufkins. They give Rayman the LockJaw, which is required for use to get to the exit.

The score thresholds for this stage are 5253 points for 25% (2 stars), 10505 points for 50% (3 stars), 15758 points for 75% (4 stars) and 21010 points for 100% (5 stars).

Secret area
After defeating the Lavomatrixes, a short way up the balloon trail is a secret cave hidden behind some trees that leads to a mine with many gems. If Rayman is using the LockJaw, some of the gems can't be grabbed before collecting the green gem.
</gallery>

Stage 3 - The slopes
Rayman arrives at the entrance to a Hoodlum camp. The area is barely infested by Hoodlums; a Slapdash standing in front of a hut is guarded by a Hoodoo, and an additional Hoodoo protects a Teensie cage. Once the Slapdash is dead, Rayman can proceed through the hut, where he automatically equips the funkyboard and sets off down the mountain. Out of nowhere, Globox appears, frozen in ice but able to talk. Rayman must race Globox down the ice, ramming into Spinneroos and avoiding leaky gas pipes on the way. If Globox beats Rayman down, the duo will slide into cable-cars and the race will restart, but if Rayman wins the race, the combined weight of the two will send them into the Hoodlum factory below.

There is a green gem near the end of the race. It can be difficult to acquire, as Rayman will have to be in the right spot to make a big enough jump to reach it.

The score thresholds for this stage are 2000 points for 25% (2 stars), 4000 points for 50% (3 stars), 6000 points for 75% (4 stars) and 8000 points for 100% (5 stars).
Known glitches
*In the first phase of this level (on the ship in the Looming Sea), it is possible to get an invincible, ever-lasting Throttle Copter. After all of the Hoodlum watercraft are defeated, if the player stands by the Throttle Copter and keeps flying into it without touching the floor, the meter won't deplete. From here, it is possible to hover into a black space with an ominous green square.
*In the second phase, before the second Hoodlock, if Rayman is near the left side of the area, it is possible to fly. This glitch works on the PC and PlayStation 2.
*In the third phase only in Rayman 3 HD the snow is a glitched texture in the first part of the snowboarding section.

Trivia
*At the end of the first stage, Globox yells out "We're the kings of the world!" This is a reference to Titanic.
*The Summit's temperature is -61 degrees.
It was released on the PlayStation Network for PlayStation 3 and the Xbox Live Arcade for Xbox 360 on the 21st March, 2012. Rayman 3 HD features minor enhancements to visuals, such as a remade HUD, and makes a few changes in numerous areas. It was announced that the servers would shut down on November 11, 2017 or November 19, 2018, thus making the leaderboards inaccessible. This did however not turn out to be the case and the servers are still up in 2022.

It was announced on the 9th November, 2015 that Rayman 3 HD would be among the first group of titles that were to be Xbox One backward compatible. This version was updated with a new logo and fixed minor graphical glitches.

Differences from Rayman 3
* The Hoodlum Havoc subtitle has been removed, and the font of the logo has been changed to match that of Rayman Origins.
* The game now features subtitles for the cutscenes and some other in-game dialogue.
* The original version opened with a gameplay trailer cut to Groove Armada's 'Madder'. This has been removed and replaced with a new trailer featuring new music.
* The intro sequence originally began with the classic Ubi Soft logo, used for the first three Rayman games, overlaid against a night sky. This has been cut.
* Rayman 3 HD features audio problems. Many music tracks start later than they should, and often contain glitches.
* In the Fairy Council, a Ludiv originally spoke the line 'Oh my God, what is going on here?' In Rayman 3 HD, this line is censored to 'What is going on here?' However, the words 'Oh my God' seen in the Crush minigame remain uncensored.
* Parts of the sky above the Clearleaf Forest have become black, and the colour of the water has undergone strange changes. The reasons for such discolourings are currently unknown.
* In the third part of the Longest Shortcut, the room where Rayman must hit a machine with curved punches has the wall on the left moved closer inside, making it smaller.
* The bonus section of the game contains an "extra" which is a gallery of the artworks seen in the Rayman Origins art booklet which came with the collector's edition.
* The shadows of objects and characters have been known to glitch up, often passing directly through surfaces and appearing/disappearing at random. The shadows also sometimes are not cast according to the location of the light source, and instead appear directly beneath the caster. This is likely due to a lack of testing when experimenting with the newer shading technology.
* The jewels and Red Lums now cast light onto the geometry around them, as opposed to the original version, where only a glowing texture was placed around them.
* The Grand Minimus's crown is now transparent.
* In The Summit Beyond the Clouds the snow is a glitched texture in the first part of the snowboarding section.
* There is a glitch where if you revisit a level before completing the game, the Tower of the Leptys level will be inaccessible.
* Level scores are now shown at the end of boss battle sections.
