{{quote|text=The Crossroads of Dreams was a place of heavenly bliss where calm, happiness and the joys of life seemed to reign forever. Some of the inhabitants even began to feel that the hours and days passed a little too slowly. Then, one day, a red Lum transformed himself into a cantankerous little ball of fluff. His name was André and he wanted to conquer the world. To this end, André turned the other red Lums into black Lums, then they all swarmed off to steal the animals’ hair and weave costumes for themselves. Thus was born the army of Hoodlums – raring to spread their mischief and idiocy throughout the Crossroads. No-one could put a stop to them! So guess who had to interrupt his siesta to go and sort things out? Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc is the third major game in the Rayman series, and the sequel to Rayman 2: The Great Escape. Rayman 3 was released in 2003. Like its immediate predecessor, it is a 3D platformer. However, Rayman 3s levels are more straightfoward and oriented towards action and combat rather than platforming and exploration. The main campaign of Rayman 3 is temporally linear – unlike the previous games, where Rayman could physically return to completed locations, each Rayman 3 level is visited only once within the storyline. The overall reception of the game was poorer than that of Rayman 2: The Great Escape.

It is notable for being the first Rayman game not directed by series creator Michel Ancel, who was occupied with the development of Beyond Good & Evil at the time. Ancel played a small role in the development of Rayman 3, assisting the team in various areas (such as Rayman's new look) and meeting with them to brainstorm ideas for characters and environments.

Rayman 3 features a points-based scoring system; another first for the series. Players could post their final scores on the then-new RaymanZone website. However, this function was disabled when RaymanZone was retooled to suit the Raving Rabbids games. In February 2009, members of the Rayman Pirate-Community contacted Ubisoft and successfully arranged for the creation of a new Hall of Fame. In July 2011, the PC version of the game joined Rayman Forever and Rayman 2 on the digital distribution network Good Old Games. In March 2012, a PS3 and Xbox 360 version titled Rayman 3 HD was released, with improved textures, framerate, lighting and audio quality.

Worlds
Similar to the gap between Rayman and Rayman 2, most locations in Rayman 3 were new and not directly connected to those of the previous games. However, they are still the same environments as Rayman's games tend to stick with: the mountains, forests, and swamps from Rayman, and the plains, coasts, and fortresses from Rayman 2. One area in particular, the Fairy Council, was alluded to in Rayman 2, and one of Count Razoff's ancestors (most likely his father) supposedly shot Space Mama; these allusions make Rayman 3s locations generally regarded as still being in the same canon as Rayman and especially Rayman 2.

Rayman 3s worlds in particular included many elements which Rayman 2 and Revolution lacked: unique environments. While the Iron Mountains and the Menhir Hills pretty much looked the same, Rayman 3 's worlds were vast and varied. Many elements from Revolution were included in Rayman 3 's worlds – the most evident of these are the ambient sounds (for example, the Desert of the Knaaren has the same ambience as beneath the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava) and the unique lighting. Rayman 3 also had many instances of stained glass windows, also a previous characteristic of the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava.

Rayman 3 returned to the fairy tale-like theme of Rayman 's locations, though not as surreal. Many odd locales dot Rayman 3 's small collection of worlds, such as in the Fairy Council and the Longest Shortcut.

Finally, Rayman 3 included many allusions to its two predecessors. References to the original Rayman game include the picture on the Manual read by Murfy in the Fairy Council, the pictures of Livingstones on plum-posts, the 2D Madness and 2D Nightmare flashback minigames, and the revelation of a connection between Count Razoff's ancestors and ‘the Space Mama of Picture City’. References to Rayman 2 include the appearance of the previously-mentioned Heart of the World, the reappearance of nettles in the Bog of Murk, the reappearance of Zombie Chickens in the Desert of the Knaaren, statues of Sssssam the Watersnake in Razoff's mansion, a statue of Ly the Fairy in a hidden room in the Longest Shortcut, and statues of Admiral Razorbeard and his Robo-Pirate servants in a secret room in the Hoodlum Headquarters. Additionally, both Murfy and Globox both make tongue-in-cheek metafictional references to Rayman 2 – Murfy complains that he was promised a larger role after Rayman 2 than the one he ultimately received, and Globox complains that Rayman is somewhat less pleasant than he was in the previous game.

Plot
The Fairy Council
Rayman and Globox are sleeping peacefully together in the forests of the Crossroads of Dreams. A nearby Red Lum receives such a terrible fright that it is transformed into an evil Black Lum named André, with aspirations of world domination. André begins to convert other Red Lums into Black Lums, spreading his corruption simply by touching them. Soon André has a large swarm of Black Lum minions. Acting as one, they steal the wool from a nearby Mawpaw and weave it into a sack-cloth costume for André: he has now become the first Hoodlum. Raising his blunderbuss, he advances towards the terrified Murfy, who cowers behind a mushroom. Murfy flees and wakes up Globox. Unable to awaken Rayman, Globox tries to drag him to safety and accidentally pulls off his hands. Murfy grabs Rayman by the hair and flies him to the Fairy Council, where André's forces are gathering. Many Black Lums have now become Hoodlums – multiple Hoodlum varieties are beginning to emerge. Rayman tracks down Globox, who returns his hands. Inside the Fairy Council, Rayman manages to defeat André's Hoodlum form, reducing him to a Black Lum once more. André reveals his plan: to reach the Heart of the World, deep within the Fairy Council, and convert its energy into an army of Hoodlums with which he can take over the world. In the ensuing struggle, André accidentally flies into the mouth of Globox, who unintentionally swallows him. When the heroes reach the chamber housing the Heart of the World, they encounter the Grand Minimus, the Kings of the Teensies. Realising that André must be extracted from Globox's stomach, the Grand Minimus instructs Rayman to take him to an old friend of his – Otto Psi, a Teensie doctor whose office is in the Clearleaf Forest. Murfy takes leave of Rayman, saying ‘See you in Rayman 4!’. Rayman and Globox step into a portal and pass through a psychedelic Teensie Highway, which leads them to their next destination.

Clearleaf Forest
On the other side of the Teensie Highway, Rayman and Globox find themselves in the Clearleaf Forest. André, still trapped inside Globox's stomach, begins to shout taunts and insults – this continues for most of the game. There are now a great many Hoodlums throughout the world – they are fought in almost every subsequent level. The Hoodlums have also started imprisoning Teensies in cages – although it is not strictly necessary to do so, Rayman can break these cages open. He is rewarded with Red Lums, jewels, and – as in Rayman – permanent increases to his health. Like the Hoodlums themselves, these Teensie cages are found in almost every subsequent level. Rayman takes Globox through the forest. Along the way, he defeats Master Kaag, a baby Hoodlum and mechanical genius. Eventually the heroes arrive at the office of Otto Psi, the first Teensie doctor. Otto attempts to remove André from Globox's stomach by playing Globox's arm like a guitar. This method proves unsuccessful – it only causes André to take refuge deeper in Globox's body. Otto refers the duo to the second Teensie doctor, Roméo Patti, whose office is in the Land of the Livid Dead. He ushers them into a portal leading to another Teensie Highway.

The Bog of Murk
Unfortunately this particular Teensie Highway is broken. Rayman and Globox are separated as they fall through some spatial rift into the Bog of Murk, a dark and unpleasant swamp. Rayman lands in the outhouse of the hideous witch Bégoniax, provoking her wrath. After he defeats her, she ushers him into her magic mirror, and he is teleported into another region of the Bog. After fighting his way past the Hoodlums, he arrives at the mansion of Count Razoff the hunter, last of the Shoedsackovskaïa family. After defeating Razoff, Rayman finds Globox in the hunter's dungeon. Bégoniax appears, revealing her love for Razoff; she carries the protesting hunter away. Rayman spots another magic mirror in Razoff's dungeon. Realising that it is another portal, the heroes step into it.

The Land of the Livid Dead
After stepping through the portal, Rayman and Globox find themselves in the Land of the Livid Dead, a mild, Celtic-styled landscape populated by Griskins, the ghosts of a Teensie tribe. After overcoming many Hoodlum enemies, the heroes find themselves at the foot of a tower made of light. Long ago, this was constructed by the Great Spirit Palmito as a prison for the Griskins. When Rayman frees the ghosts, they help him along his way by destroying some Hoodlums. Rayman then defeats Céloche, a gigantic, amphibious, mechanical tripod piloted by a Hoodlum. The heroes finally arrive at the office of Roméo Patti, the second Teensie doctor. Roméo attempts to extract André from Globox's stomach by drumming on his belly; however, this only drives André into Globox's brain. Roméo refers the heroes to the third and final Teensie doctor, Gonzo, whose office is in the Desert of the Knaaren. He then ushers them into another Teensie Highway portal.

The Desert of the Knaaren
The heroes emerge in the Desert of the Knaaren, a scorched landscape whose cavernous underworld is inhabited by sadistic beasts known as Knaaren, who worship a god known as the Leptys. The Knaaren quickly capture Globox, leaving Rayman to make his own way through the tunnels. Rayman himself is eventually captured, and forced to take part in an arena battle against Reflux, the undefeated champion of the Knaaren. Rayman defeats Reflux, and Gumsi, the child-king of the Knaaren, grudgingly rewards him. With the Sceptre of the Leptys, Gumsi invokes his god, and it bestows a new power upon Rayman: the Grimace. Rayman can now pull a grotesque face which causes corrupt Black Lums to revert into harmless Red Lums. Armed with this new power, Rayman and Globox finally arrive at the office of Gonzo, the third Teensie doctor. Gonzo summons Otto Psi and Roméo Patti, and the three doctors together do what the individuals could not: their joined music succeeds in exorcising André from Globox's body. Unfortunately for the heroes, André escapes. The doctors despair, realising that if André finds the energy to multiple, all is lost. Deep within the tunnels under the Desert of the Knaaren, he tracks down Reflux, who was disgraced by his defeat at the hands of Rayman. André convinces Reflux to steal the Sceptre of the Leptys from his king, Gumsi. With the energy from the Sceptre, André will be able to spawn a vast army of Black Lums (and subsequently Hoodlums). André promises that he will make sure Reflux gets a chance to exact his revenge upon Rayman.

The Longest Shortcut
The Teensie doctors take Rayman and Globox through a portal. Once they arrive, the doctors explain the situation to the heroes: André and Reflux have joined forces and plan to invoke the Leptys, gaining unimagineable powers. The doctors tell the heroes that they are currently in the Longest Shortcut, which will hopefully allow them to catch up with the villains. A temple filled with light, mirrors and statues of the Grand Minimus, this level focuses entirely on puzzles and platforming, and features no combat. At the end of the level, the heroes find themselves at a dock, where the three doctors are waiting for them. The doctors inform them that they are too late, but give them a ship, telling them to use it to try and catch up with the villains. Rayman and Globox climb aboard and set sail.

The Summit Beyond the Clouds
As they cross the Looming Sea, their ship is assailed by Hoodlum watercraft, but Rayman manages to fight them off. Eventually Globox steers the ship to the snowy mountain range known as the Summit Beyond the Clouds. Ascending the mountains, Rayman and Globox eventually find the hidden entrance to the Hoodlum Headquarters, where they will hopefully be able to find and stop André.

Hoodlum Headquarters
The Hoodlum Headquarters is the Hoodlums' base of operations: an underground network of crate-filled tunnels and magma-filled caverns, all presided over by ‘Toots’, a female Hoodlum whose sensual voice whispers instructions over the intercom. Globox sees a cardboard cut-out of his wife Uglette in a bikini – believing it to be the source of the attractive voice, Globox runs towards it and falls into a trap door, where he is captured. André's voice follows Rayman as he makes his way through the Hoodlum Headquarters, constantly taunting him and shouting instructions to his Hoodlum minions. At one point, Globox is taken by a mechanical arm into a room filled with Armaguiddons – flying Hoodlum vehicles. It is later revealed that he has somehow managed to escape and commandeer one. Eventually Rayman finds the Horrible Machine, a boiler-like construction which lies at the heart of the Hoodlum Headquarters. It appears to manufacture Hoodlums. When Rayman defeats it, it breaks down, and the entire Hoodlum Headquarters begins to collapse. Rayman manages to escape just in time – the Horrible Machine explodes, blasting fire and Black Lums in all directions and blowing the entireHoodlum Headquarters into oblivion. The blast sends Rayman flying through the air. André manages to escape from the chaos of the exploding Hoodlum Headquarters. He flies to the top of the nearby Tower of the Leptys, where Reflux stands waiting for him. Reflux holds the Sceptre of the Leptys. Raising it to the sky, he shouts an invocation, commanding the Leptys to give him its power. The sky swirls and darkens, and becomes filled with a vibrant blue mixture of strange stars, clouds and asteroids. This mystical mass of energy seems to be the Leptys itself. As Reflux raises the Sceptre, it is struck by bolts of lightning from the Leptys above. The Sceptre glows more and more brightly.

The Tower of the Leptys
The explosion of the Hoodlum Headquarters sent Rayman flying through the air – now he lands at the foot of the Tower of the Leptys, slowing his descent with his helicopter hair. The sky above glows with the Leptys's power. Rayman enters the Tower and begins to climb. Although the Tower is filled with Hoodlums, the statues it contains make it apparent that it was built by the Knaaren in honour of their god, the Leptys. Eventually Rayman meets up with Globox, who seems to have escaped the Hoodlum Headquarters with the Armaguiddon he now drives. The heroes use the Armaguiddon to ascend through the upmost tunnels of the Tower, which are filled with gigantic gears and vertical passageways which would have been impassable on foot. Rayman must use the Armaguiddon's plasma cannon to defeat waves of Hoodlum-piloted enemy Armaguiddons along the way. Globox seems to miss André's presence – he now perceives the malevolent Black Lum as a mischievous child, and seems to lack any awareness of what is actually happening. Once they reach the top of the Tower, Rayman goes on ahead to the final confrontation. Reflux has grown and mutated as a result of absorbing the Leptys's power. The two have a brief battle – Rayman defeats Reflux by attacking the Sceptre. Reflux then decides that he requires more power than he can get by simply wielding the Sceptre of the Leptys as a weapon – he now takes the Sceptre and embeds it into the flesh of his own back. This greatly magnifies Reflux's power, causing him to mutate even further and grow to a colossal size. The two have another battle – Rayman now manages to climb up Reflux's arm and onto his back, where he can continue to attack the Sceptre embedded in his flesh. Next Reflux begins to float, and causes the upper blocks of the Tower to levitate upwards with him. Rayman must climb these blocks while avoiding Reflux's attacks. Eventually Rayman finds a Shock Rocket, which he uses to attack the Sceptre once more. Reflux then sprouts wings – he now bears a resemblance to the gigantic, eagle-like statue of the Leptys seen in the Desert of the Knaaren. He flies upwards into the glowing storm of energy overhead. Rayman is unsure how to proceed – luckily Globox appears in his Armaguiddon, and the heroes ride it upwards into the strange storm in the sky. They then find themselves in a surreal landscape filled with eyes on stalks – this world appears to be some manifestation of the Leptys itself. They are attacked by Reflux, who chases them in a circle through the air. Rayman uses the Armaguiddon's plasma cannon to damage Reflux. This forces Reflux to alight on the ground of this bizarre place for a moment so he can recover. When he lands, Reflux shoots a barrage of hundreds of Black Lums from the flesh of his back. As they hit the ground, they transform into an army of Hoodlums. These Hoodlums march back into Reflux, where they are absorbed. If Rayman uses the Armaguiddon's bomb launcher to kill some of the Hoodlums, Reflux's overall health is reduced. When all of these Hoodlums are absorbed or destroyed, Reflux flies after the heroes and their Armaguiddon again. These two stages of the battle are repeated alternately until either Rayman or Reflux is defeated. when Reflux is finally beaten, he freezes into a gigantic block of solid ice, then shatters and disappears. André emerges from Reflux's remains – it is revealed that he was inside Reflux throughout the entire battle. This is the reason Reflux could shoot Black Lums from his back – André was inside him, converting the energy from the Sceptre of the Leptys into more Black Lums. André is now alone and helpless, and is entirely at Rayman's mercy. In desperation he cries out to Globox for help, but receives none. Rayman pulls a Grimace, converting André back into a Red Lum. This causes all of the Black Lums throughout the Crossroads of Dreams to revert, effectively putting an end to the Hoodlum invasion. Rayman and Globox tumble all the way to the ground; their fall is broken by a Squab. Rayman realises that they are now in exactly the same place they were in when Murfy woke them up at the beginning of the game. He remarks that they can now get a good night's sleep after all – the events of the entire game took place over the course of just one day. Globox appears to be sad. When Rayman asks him what is wrong, Globox says that he misses André. He asks Rayman to scare a Red Lum, thus bringing André back. Rayman says that he does not think this is a good idea. As he drifts off to sleep, Rayman remarks that that he hates to imagine what could possibly scare a Lum. A flashback is then shown. It reveals that, immediately prior to the beginning of the game, Rayman's hands sleepwalked and created strange shadow puppets on a wall. These shadow puppets frightened a nearby Red Lum so badly that it was transformed into a Black Lum: André. This means that the actions of Rayman's wandering hands brought about the creation of the Hoodlum army and caused all the events of the entire game, and since in the end Rayman and Globox return to the starting point, the ending makes it clear that history will repeat itself.
Score system
Main article: Rayman 3 scoring system

Rayman 3 is the first game in the series to introduce a score system in an arcade-style format. Until the reformat of RaymanZone for Rayman Raving Rabbids, players were able to enter the key code they are provided at the end of the game in order to participate in a worldwide score ranking. A new Hall of Fame was created on Rayman Pirate-Community in 2009. The score system notably increased the replay value of the game.

The scoring system is based on the combo mode, which is triggered every time points are collected. Depending on the nature of the last yield, it will either last 2 or 6 seconds, unless the player collects points within the given time, thus bringing back the time left before the combo mode ends to 2 or 6 seconds. Any item collected during the combo mode will have their points added to the combo counter (in addition to the main counter), with a multiple of two for the items between the sixth and the tenth position, three for the items between the eleventh and the fifteenth position, four for the items between the sixteenth and the twentieth position, and five for the items after the twenty-first position. When the combo mode ends, all the points in the combo counter will be added to the main counter, and any new combo will start at the first position again. Notably, if Rayman is using a Laser-Washing Powder can, points are doubled.

While the developers thought the maximum attainable score was around 500,000 points, the discovery of various glitches and the mastery of the scoring mechanics allowed much higher scores, the highest known overall score being 858,800 points.
Reception
Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc received generally positive reviews from critics. On GameRankings, the GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox and Windows versions received scores of 78.24%, 80.13%, 76.91% and 78.31% respectively.

The game's impressive visuals and artistic style received universal praise. Its dialogue, voice acting and humour polarised reviewers, with some praising their wit, and others criticising them as annoying and grating. The gameplay was generally regarded as solid, but some criticised the game for focusing on combat and timer-based puzzles rather than platforming.

In 2006, Nintendo Power published a brief retrospective on Rayman 3, in anticipation of the Rayman Raving Rabbids platformer, which was in production at the time.

Trivia
* The Fairy Council and the Heart of the World were first mentioned in Rayman 2, and only now make an appearance in Rayman 3.
* Sometimes, when you start hitting Globox, he says "You were nicer in Rayman 2!".
* There are lots of secret rooms in the game, but three of them refer to Rayman 2. One, located in the Longest Shortcut, has a statue of Ly in it. Another, in the Hoodlum Headquarters, has statues of Razorbeard and some of his Robo-Pirates sitting at a table, in the style of 'The Last Supper' painting by Leonardo da Vinci. Also, in Razoff's mansion, one of the many different statues is of a snake which appears to be Sssssam the Snake from Rayman 2.
* At the beginning of the third part of the Fairy Council, when Rayman and Murfy are looking for André and Globox, Murfy tells Rayman to hurry or else "he'll start telling everyone he's your father!". This is a reference to the famous scene from the film, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, in which the villain, Darth Vader, reveals to the hero, Luke Skywalker, that he is his father.
* In the Fairy Council, when Rayman and Murfy pursue André and encounter the Ludiv, the Dark Lum Lord throws the fairy away from her home, saying Zelda needs her, before hiding in the Ludiv's home. Zelda is a major character from the popular video game series The Legend of Zelda.

This means that the actions of Rayman's wandering hands brought about the creation of the Hoodlum army and caused all the events of the entire game, and since in the end Rayman and Globox return to the starting point, the ending makes it clear that history will repeat. itself.

Lac-Mac is a character who appears only in all four episodes of Rayman: The Animated Series. He is the star of Rigatoni's intergalactic flying circus, where he and his friends are made to perform many circus tricks in front of large, scarily devoted audiences. In Lac-Mac's case, he is able to juggle several balls at once, and later on in Lac-Mac Napping he demonstrates his incredible strength - he is strong enough to quickly bend solid steel into shapes, and later pulls the bars of his backstage cage apart, therefore setting himself and his friends free.

Appearance
Lac-Mac is a tall mysterious creature that resembles some sort of rabbit. He is blue in colour with pink spots and a beige underbelly, has two long ear like forms growing from his head, which are also pink, has large feet, allowing him to hop like a kangaroo and also has large buckteeth.

Personality
Not much is known about Lac-Mac's personality, mainly because he rarely speaks. When he does, he commonly refers to himself in third-person and speaks in short sentences, adding to his somewhat simple minded personality. He appears to be ditzy and naive, with a rather short concentration span, and is constantly being dragged into things by Cookie, who Lac-Mac seems to look up to. There are subliminal hints across the series, particularly in Big Date, that he may have a crush on Betina, but it's unknown whether she returns the feelings. Like everyone else, he seems to be terrified of Rigatoni, but manages to get over the mistreatment by him in an alarmingly short time.

Trivia
In Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc, in The Land of the Livid Dead, Globox drinks a keg full of plum juice before the fight with the Hoodstormer. By ascending the bubble he belches, Rayman can discover a secret room in a wall with Teensies frozen in ice, many yellow jewels and a green jewel. Another figure frozen in one of them also resembles Lac-Mac.
Rayman M: Multiplayer (known as Rayman Arena outside of Europe) is a multiplayer spin-off game based on Rayman 2: The Great Escape. In Europe, it was released only on the Sony PlayStation 2 and PC on the 30th November 2001, while in North America it was released on the Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo GameCube in addition to the PlayStation 2 and PC. It is a 3D game which combines racing, battling, and a few traditional platform elements. Unlike the other Rayman games, this game does not have a notable plot, other than that the characters are in a sporting competition.

Gameplay
The gameplay in Rayman M is split into two main modes, Racing and Battle.

Racing Mode
In this mode, the players take part in a foot race and face a number of obstacles depending on which environment they are playing in. There are no power-ups in this mode, although throughout each course there are Purple Lums, speed ramps and small trampolines that are useful. This mode has four different types of racing game. Obstacles include boxes that the player has to shoot up to eight times in order to pass, bear traps and electric bars.

* Training: This mode allows the player to explore the course and practice before playing in the other modes, as well as setting their own personal records. Only a single player can play in this mode.
* Race: This mode involves up to four characters to race each other, the first one to the finish line wins. In single player mode, the other players are computer controlled and there are three laps to run, while in multi-player mode the players can set how many laps to run before winning.
* Popolopoï: This mode uses a time limit in which a character must complete three laps in. Although the time starts at 20 seconds, the time can be increased by shooting small butterflies called Popolopoï, which come in different colours that represent how much time is given. Only a single player can play in this mode.
*Lums: In this mode, the player has to complete three laps while collecting the maximum number of Yellow Lums required in order to legally win, and must come in first place as well.
This is also needed later on in the game, as the amount of lums the player collected will be transferred into the amount of time the player gets to finish that particular race in On and On, a bonus race level.
Only a single player can play in this mode.

Battle Mode
Rather than an obstacle course, the Battle mode is made up of an arena in which characters run around playing three different modes. Unlike the Race mode, this mode uses power-ups.

* Lum Spring: In the mode, the player has to collect as many Lums (which unusually look like crystals this time) as they can in order to reach the winning conditions - in a typical game, this is up to five Lums - or before the time runs out. To help him or her prevent the opponents from reaching them first, they are equipped with ice bullets to freeze them, thought the others' shots have to be avoided.

* Lum Fight: Each player starts with five hit points each, and the player has to knock all of the opponents' hit points in order to score Lums. Each time a player dies, they respawn somewhere else in the arena. A negative Lum is given to a player that loses to a self-infliction. Various power-ups called Generators are scattered around, and contain a different weapon to use against opponents. Uses the same winning conditions as Lum Spring.

* Capture the Fly: This game is similar to tag - the player has to find a Light Fly and keep hold of it as long as possible without getting hit by an opponent's shot. The character is equipped with five bounce bullets which are only effective on the player in possession of the Fly. The player that reaches the winning conditions first wins.

Environment
Rayman M is set mainly in environments based on those of Rayman 2: The Great Escape. The game consists of four different worlds for each mode, each with three stages. The world the players play in also determines the difficulty of the game, going from Beginner to Advanced. As the player progresses, the harder difficulties are unlocked. Many of the worlds in Rayman M that resemble locations from Rayman 2 include Ly's Palace, which resembles the Sanctuary of Water and Ice, and the Dark Sewers, which are reminiscent of the Tomb of the Ancients.

Characters
At the start of the game, five characters are available, and as the player progresses through the game, they'll unlock the remaining characters as well as skins for them. Each character has their own musical theme in the Racing mode, and have their own method of gliding, though they all shoot the same way Rayman does.

*Rayman: The star of the game. He has one unlockable skin only in Rayman Arena.
*Globox: Rayman's best friend, who joined the competition to overcome his shyness (unlike other games he appeared in, he is not scared of the bad guys). He has three unlockable skins.
*Teensies: A pair of Grand Minimus Teensies. They have three unlockable skins.
*Admiral Razorbeard: The irritable lord of the Robo-Pirate Army.
*Henchman 800: One of the Robo-Pirates from Rayman 2, particularly of the Red variety. He has three unlockable skins.
*Tily: A small fairy speculated to have replaced Ly the Fairy. Tily must be unlocked.
*Razorwife: Admiral Razorbeard's flamboyant wife. Razorwife must be unlocked.
*Henchman 1000: An older Robo-Pirate model. Henchman 1000 must be unlocked. He has three unlockable skins.
*Dark Globox: An more evil, dumber, uglier, and certainly ruder version of Globox. Dark Globox only appears in "Rayman Arena" and must be unlocked.
*Dark Rayman: An evil doppelgänger of Rayman. Dark Rayman only appears in the Gamecube and Xbox version of Rayman Arena and must be unlocked. He is also the player's opponent through the entire third league in the game, the Master League. He is the main antagonist of Rayman Arena.

The objects
Objects are located in racing courses that will give the player special benefits, sometimes intended to slow the player down in a race, or to speed the player up. Some objects refer to Rayman 2.

* Speed ramps: A blue panel on the ground or platform that will give the player a speed boost for a few seconds by walking over it. Pressing the "special button" when this speed boost is active will grant the player even more extra speed, leaving little clouds of dust behind them.
* Bumpers: A circle 'trampoline' on the ground which propels the player into the air, most often resulting in a shortcut.
* Nettles: These look similar to the plants of the same name in Beneath the Sanctuary of Lava in Rayman 2. When the player gets close it will 'whip', her/him resulting in the player to slow down. There are many types of nettle, including a skeletal one.
* Purple Lums: A well-known Lum from Rayman 2 which allows the player to swing through the air, circumnavigating obstacles or following a faster route.
* Switches: These switches, unlike those in Rayman 2, are square-shaped and labelled with icons – either a Robo-Pirate head, a Piranha or a Spider. If the player shoots at a switch, it will activate a hidden passage or will drastically alter the surrounding environment to stop opponent(s), but can also affect the player.
* Electric fences: When the player touches the electrical beams from this fence it will electrocute her/him resulting in the player to slow down.
* Electric barrels: Avoid this object, it will hit a player when it lights up, resulting in the player to slow down.

The weapons
These are the weapons present in the fighting stages of the game. In Lum Fight mode, they are taken from Generators that are randomly scattered around the arena. In Lum Spring and Capture the Fly modes, there is only one weapon that is present, and is given to the player at the beginning of the match. This is the Ice Bullet for Lum Spring and the Rubber Bullet for Capture the Fly.

* Fake Generator: It looks like a normal generator that gives the player a weapon, but it in fact a bomb been placed down by another player or CPU. It explodes on contact (or just after a character passes) and it inflicts 3 hit points.
* Item Leech: When activated, it steals a random other players' weapon. if no other player is carrying something, it will steal one from a generator.
* Buzz Rocket: When activated, the player will stand to a still (making him or herself vulnerable to attacks)and he or she will instead be in control of a small, highly sensitive flying weapon, the Buzz rocket. It inflicts 5 hit points, on impact on another player. The player can only use it once.
* Ultimate Barrier: An indestructible force field that cocoons the player for a few seconds. It also effectively inflicts 1 hit point of damage if it comes in contact with another player.
* Glue Bomb: When mastered, this weapon is irresistible to use! It sticks to a player by contact, spinning around the unlucky character(until passed on to another) then explodes after a few seconds. Inflicts 3 hit points of damage. Looks very similar to the Helicopter bomb from Rayman 2.
* Rapid Bullets: Shoots a row of 3 bullets per round. Each bullet inflicts 1 hit point.
* Rubber Bullet: Can almost always make a direct hit. Can bounce of walls and objects (up to 3 bounces). Each bullet inflicts 1 hit point. In Capture the Fly mode, the player get 5 bullets. It just steals the fly from the carrier and ammo refills over time.
* Hound Bullet: Automatically chases the nearest opponent. Each Hound Bullet inflicts 1 hit point.
* Firework Bullet: Is pointless unless a player is nearby, or he or she locks onto another player. A green Firework Bullet detonates on impact. Inflicts 1 hit point on anyone within explosion range.
* Flametounge Bullet: A flame which its direction can be controlled for a few seconds, then remaining active for a few more, engulfing anyone who unfortunately goes into it. Inflicts 1 hit point.
* Ice Bullet: Only available in Lum Spring mode. It freezes the targeted character for 1 second. The ammo refills over time.

Soundtrack
The game features a dynamic soundtrack by French composer Claude Samard. Each battle level features its own theme, while the background music of the race levels is determined by the identity of the character currently in the first position – each character has their own theme music, and additional musical cues mediate whenever the game switches from one theme to another.

Rayman is a 2D sidescrolling platform game based on the original Rayman. It was first released for the Game Boy Color in 2000, and an enhanced port was later released for Symbian and Nintendo 3DS. Due to the Game Boy Color's technical limitations, the game is much shorter than the original Rayman, and many characters and locations are absent. However, the game remains notable for its final boss battle against Mr Dark.

Most characters from the original Rayman do not appear in this version. The allies – Betilla the Fairy, the Magician, Tarayzan, the Musician and Joe the Extra-Terrestrial – are all omitted, and so are the bosses – Moskito, Mr Sax, Mr Stone, Space Mama and Mr Skops. The only characters in the game, apart from generic enemies, are Rayman, Mr Dark, the Tings and the Toons.

Plot
The Game Boy Color game follows the same general plot as the original: the evil Mr Dark has imprisoned the Electoons in cages and cast the Glade of Dreams into imbalance, leaving Rayman to free his prisoners and defeat him. Like the gameplay, the story is simplified; many characters and have been eliminated. This version's unique intro sequence details most of the plot changes:

Notable differences
* While Rayman's sprite is a smaller version of that in the original Rayman, the rest of this version's artwork uses his appearance in Rayman 2: The Great Escape.
* In this game, the Tings are said to be tiny fairies that float inside magical glassy spheres. They often talk to Rayman, and their purpose in the levels is to guide him and help him on his quest.
* The entire game uses no music from the original, instead replaced with music from Rayman 2: The Great Escape.
* The game uses only a password feature, and has no save system.
* Access to bonus levels is represented by an exit sign which has an arrow facing upwards, rather than the Magician.
* When Rayman is near a cage, the music changes.
* The World Map is only accessible at the end of the game.
* All levels have original names.

Other features
Ubi Key
The Ubi Key was an exclusive feature in which two Game Boy Colors would transfer data to each other using the infra-red links (the small black tabs next to where the user inserts the Game Pak). In this case, a giant key would be found at some point of the game, and when these are transferred they would give you access to bonuses, such as a secret level.

Sticker book
New copies of the European version of the game contained a small sticker booklet and some stickers which used Rayman 2 artwork. Strangely, there was also a page that featured Rigatoni, the main antagonist from The Animated Series, which was possibly a means to advertise the series, though it never aired in more than a few countries. The rest of the stickers could be obtained at the now-defunct official Rayman 2 website, Rayman2.com.
Rayman, more commonly known as Rayman 1, is the first game in the Rayman series and features the debut of the titular character. The game was first released in 1995 on the Atari Jaguar, Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and on MS-DOS. A Game Boy Color adaptation was released in 2000, followed by a Game Boy Advance version which was released in 2001, under the name Rayman Advance. In 2008, the game was released on the PlayStation Network as a downloadable PSOne Classic, playable on Sony PlayStation 3 and Sony PlayStation Portable. In December 2009, the game was released as a DSiWare title for the Nintendo DSi.

Plot
Intro
The entire game takes place in the valley, a diverse and surreal location somewhere in the Glade of Dreams. Prior to the beginning of the game, all is harmonious; a mystical pink orb known as the Great Protoon provides peace and balance to the world. However, this cannot last – one day, the evil Mr Dark steals the Great Protoon and defeats its guardian, Betilla the Fairy. The natural balance of the world is disrupted; freaks and hostile characters begin to appear. The Electoons, small friendly creatures which gravitated around the Great Protoon, are scattered across the valley and imprisoned in cages by Mr Dark's minions. A benevolent character known as the Magician turns to the heroic Rayman for help. The Magician gives Rayman these tasks: free the Electoons from their cages, and recover the Great Protoon from Mr Dark. Only then will the balance of the world be restored. The valley contains six distinct worlds, and Rayman must pass through each of them in order to fulfil his objectives and reach his ultimate goal.

Note that, for the sake of simplicity, the following description assumes that the player chooses to pass through each world one after the other in the correct order. Rayman's path is a branching one; at several points in the game, the player is offered a choice between two new levels, though it will be necessary to backtrack in order to free Electoons and gain certain powers if the player chooses to skip ahead.

The Dream Forest
The first world is of the game the Dream Forest, a lush jungle. Rayman's journey begins in a region known as Pink Plant Woods. On his way through these woods, he encounters Betilla for the first time in the game; she grants him the telescopic fist ability, which takes advantage of his detached hands and allows him to throw them, defeating enemies or smashing cages. Rayman passes into Anguish Lagoon, where he encounters a mosquito who is later identified in Rayman Revolution as Bzzit. The two fight briefly, and Bzzit begins to cry when Rayman defeats him. Rayman takes pity on Bzzit and cheers him up; they become friends. Bzzit allows Rayman to ride on his back as he flies over the otherwise impassable waters of the lagoon. Betilla appears again and gives Rayman another power: the ability to hang onto ledges, which helps him to avoid falls and lets him climb onto certain platforms. Rayman then moves on to the Swamps of Forgetfulness, where he meets Tarayzan (a pastiche of Tarzan). Tarayzan has lost his loincloth and is hiding behind a shrub. Rayman returns it to him, and Tarayzan rewards him by giving him a magic seed. Suddenly the rain begins to flood the area, and Rayman must use the magic seed to grow nenuphars which he can climb to escape the flood. Next Rayman passes into Moskito's Nest, where he is chased by a mosquito called Moskito. As the main boss of the Dream Forest, Moskito is essentially a more powerful and unpleasant version of Bzzit. Eventually Rayman and Moskito have a climactic battle in the deepest part of the forest. After Rayman defeats him, Betilla appears to give him another power: the grappling fist ability, which enables him to swing from flying rings and cover large distances without touching the ground.

Band Land
The second world of the game is Band Land, a landscape composed of music and musical instruments. The first region Rayman passes through is Bongo Hills, an area relatively close to the ground, and with many drum platforms. Next he reaches Allegro Presto, an airy location composed mainly of slippery sheet music. Here Betilla the Fairy grants him the helicopter power, which allows him to hover and glide by using his hair as a helicopter. He also encounters Mr Sax, a giant evil saxophone who is the boss of Band Land. Next Rayman makes his way through Gong Heights, a cloudy level in the sky inhabited by meditating monks. Finally he comes to Mr Sax's Hullaballoo, the lair of the boss he met earlier. This level plays like a combination of the previous three, with the characteristic elements of each. Rayman is chased by Mr Sax, and finally does battle with him in his lair, and defeats him. Mr Sax comes to his senses and begins to dance.

Blue Mountains
The third world of the game is the Blue Mountains, a cold mountain range. The first level is Twilight Gulch, where Rayman finds himself chased by Mr Stone, the gigantic stone man who is the boss of the Blue Mountains. The next area is the Hard Rocks, where no notable events occur. The final region in the Blue Mountains is Mr Stone's Peaks, where Mr Stone lives. When Rayman arrives, he meets a character known as the Musician, who lives in a hut in the mountains with his wife and child. The Musician's guitar has been crushed by a falling rock. Rayman uses his telescopic fist to carve a new guitar out of the rock, and the Musician rewards him by giving him a Super Helicopter potion; this temporary upgrade to Rayman's helicopter ability allows him to fly freely, which comes in useful in the next couple of areas. Finally Rayman reaches Mr Stone's lair and makes use of a nearby totem pole to defeat his enemy. With the totem pole's head lodged on his own, the jumbled Mr Stone reforms and begins to dance. Betilla appears and gives Rayman his final power: the ability to run. This replaces the ability to grimace (whose only purpose was scaring Livingstones).

Picture City
The fourth world of the game is Picture City, a landscape composed of artwork and art supplies. The first level is Eraser Plains, where Rayman encounters Space Mama, the boss of Picture City. She battles him while wearing a Viking costume, on a stage made to look like the sea. Next Rayman passes through Pencil Pentathlon, where nothing notable occurs. The final level of Picture City is Space Mama's Crater, where Rayman and Space Mama have their final showdown. This time she wears a science-fiction costume while using sci-fi props as weapons, and the background is made to look like the surface of the moon. After the battle, Space Mama reforms and begins to dance (though this only happens in some versions of the game). Rayman then sees Mr Dark kidnap Betilla the Fairy.

The Caves of Skops
The fifth world of the game is the Caves of Skops, a series of dark but colourful underground caverns. The first level here is Crystal Palace, where nothing noteworthy occurs. The next level is Eat at Joe's, where Rayman encounters Joe the Extra-Terrestrial, a friendly green alien who owns a seaside restaurant near the caves. Joe is depressed because he is not getting any business, as the neon sign above his restaurant is not functioning. Rayman decides to do what it takes to turn Joe's lights on again. With a firefly given to him by Joe to light his way, Rayman heads into the pitch-dark caves. After making his way through the darkest caverns, he eventually finds a plug which is falling out of its socket. Rayman punches it back into place, and Joe's entire electrical system is reactivated – including a network of wired flying saucers which Rayman rides back to the surface. When he has returned to Joe's restaurant, Rayman finds that the neon sign is lit, much to Joe's delight. The alien allows Rayman to use his buoys as platforms. When Rayman crosses the water, he finds himself in Mr Skops's Stalactites. Here he encounters Mr Skops, a gigantic, malevolent pink scorpion with one giant claw. Skops is not pleased when Rayman wakes him, and attacks while periodically retreating. Rayman chases Skops to his temple lair, where the two battle until Skops is defeated. Rayman sees Betilla the Fairy, now trapped by Mr Dark in a tiny glass sphere; she urges him to hurry. However, Rayman cannot move on to the next and final world until he has broken each of the one hundred and two Electoon cages scattered throughout the five previous worlds.

Candy Château
The sixth and final world of the game is Candy Château, a landscape composed of sweets and crockery. It contains only one level: Mr Dark's Dare. First Rayman slides across hills of icing on a frying pan. Next he is chased by Bad Rayman, an evil doppelgänger created by Mr Dark to shadow Rayman's every move; Rayman dies instantly if he touches him. Next Rayman makes his way through an area populated by various types of clowns. Here Mr Dark casts various spells on him to make his passage even more challenging; first he reverses the player's left–right controls, then he forces Rayman to run uncontrollably, and then he takes away Rayman's telescopic fist power, rendering him helpless. Finally Rayman confronts Mr Dark in the central room of his château, whose walls contain stained glass windows depicting the five previous bosses. First Mr Dark toys with Rayman by hanging his telescopic fist on a rope, and snatching it away whenever Rayman attempts to retrieve it. Then Mr Dark throws fireballs at Rayman, traps him between two pillars of fire and throws more fireballs at him in ways that make them increasingly difficult to avoid. Mr Dark tells Rayman that he is doomed and causes the pillars of fire to slowly move in on him, but a pair of Electoons suddenly fly into the room, take Rayman's telescopic fist from the rope and return it to him. Mr Dark seemingly vanishes, and a strange creature composed of body parts from Mr Stone and Mr Skops appears; their corresponding windows glow. It is not clear if this is an actual mixture of the two bosses, or a transformation of Mr Dark. When this enemy is defeated, two creatures composed of body parts from Moskito and Space Mama appear. When these are defeated, a final creature composed of body parts from Moskito, Mr Sax and Space Mama appears, and Rayman is temporarily shrunk to make the battle even more challenging. Once Rayman defeats this creature, the game is complete. In the Sega Saturn version, the stained glass windows shatter, revealing the night sky and the two moons characteristic of Rayman's world. The Magician congratulates Rayman on saving the world. The credits sequence shows the good characters going on holiday with the enemies and bosses, who are now reformed; it seems that none of them were truly evil except Mr Dark, who in most versions is nowhere to be seen. At the end of the credits, a final message appears: ‘See you soon – Rayman’, hinting at the sequel, Rayman 2: The Great Escape. However, in the Atari Jaguar version, the credits end with Mr Dark flying across the screen, confirming his escape, and the ‘See you soon’ message takes on a sinister quality, promising that Mr Dark will return – though the villain has yet to resurface in the main series. After the credits, if the player attempts to replay Mr Dark's Dare, a final epilogue image appears instead, showing Rayman together with all his friends; the Electoons have been freed, Mr Dark has been defeated (for now), Betilla the Fairy has been rescued and the Great Protoon has been recovered and returned to its rightful place. The balance of the Glade of Dreams has been restored.

Early production
Main article: Rayman (early production)

In the years since the game's release, much information regarding the early development of the game has been revealed, mainly through beta versions leaked to the public and Rayman Designer hacking. An interview also revealed that Rayman had had his limbs removed due to technical limitations.

Two Atari Jaguar beta versions have become available on the Internet – an early prototype, which was leaked to the public in October 2008, and a demo version that had been available from ROM download sites since several years before. While the former features many differences from the final version, especially concerning the gameplay and levels, the latter displays even more divergences, with a noticeably different heads-up display centered at the top of the screen.

In July 2010, it was revealed that the game was initially developed for the Super NES.

Gameplay
Rayman is a 2D side-scrolling platform game, unlike its successors. The game takes place in a valley which is made up of six different worlds, half of which are natural (the Dream Forest, Blue Mountains, and the Caves of Skops), while the other half is 'imaginary' (Band Land, Picture City, and the Candy Château). Each of these worlds excluding Candy Château contains three or four levels, each with six cages with Electoons to find. The game's difficulty is progressive, meaning that it gets harder as the player continues.

The game's heads-up display consist of how many lives Rayman has, three units of energy (four in Rayman Advance) and five with a Super Power (six in Rayman Advance), and how many Tings he has collected. Rayman normally starts with four lives and three health units, and can collect up to 99 lives. When he takes damage, he loses one unit, and when he loses all of them, he loses a life, his temporary fist powers, and all of the Tings he had collected. Upon Game Over, he has up to nine continues depending on the version, which are represented with alarm clocks.

The game is considered extremely difficult – much more so than the later instalments in the series. Many players do not complete it. This is because the game was never play-tested, leaving the developers with no conception of how difficult it would be for a new player. As a result of the original game's renowned difficulty, great efforts were taken to make Rayman Origins accessible to both beginners and veteran players.

List of powers and power-ups
At the start of the game, Rayman is only able to pull a grimace, which is used to scare certain enemies. As he continues, he would receive permanent powers from Betilla the Fairy that gradually widen his abilities, as well as receive a few temporary ones.

Permanent
* Grimace: Rayman's only ability at the game's beginning, only useful for getting rid of tall Livingstones which are scared of this.
* Telescopic fist: The first power that Rayman gains from Betilla the Fairy, which allows Rayman to punch enemies to defeat them. This can be temporarily powered up by Speed Fists and Golden Fists.
* Hanging: Allows Rayman to hang onto ledges.
* Grappling Fist: When acquired, Rayman can use his fist to grapple onto flying rings which are scattered around the place, allowing him to reach high places and cross wide gaps.
* Helicopter: When acquired, Rayman can use his odd looking hair as a helicopter which only allows him to glide, and prolong his jumps.
* Running: Rayman's last permanent power, which allows him to move faster than walking. It also makes his jumps a lot longer and faster. This replaces the grimace.

Temporary
* Magic Seed: Given to Rayman after helping Tarayzan, Rayman plants seeds to help him reach ledges and escape floods.
* Super Helicopter: A potion that allows Rayman to actually fly with his helicopter hair.
* Shrinking: Touching Blue elves makes Rayman tiny, which is useful for accessing areas which were too small for normal-sized Rayman to go through. He returns to normal size when he touches another Flying blue elf.

Power-Ups
* Tings: Small blue bubbles, used either to pay the Magician to enter a bonus stage, or to gain an extra life when 100 are collected.
* Powers: Comes in either a small red atom with a P on the front, or a large red one - the former gives Rayman one or two units of health, while the latter replenishes his entire health.
* Speed Fist: Allows Rayman's fist to fly faster than normal. Three different speeds are available.
* Golden Fist: Allows Rayman's fist to be twice as strong.
* Life: Gives Rayman an extra life, as well as restoring his entire health.

Characters
Throughout the game, Rayman meets an array of different characters, some of which aid him through his journey.

These images were used as a reference for the new game.]]

Friends
* The Magician: He introduces the game's story. He can also be found at several points of the game, in which he would offer Rayman to access bonus stages and help him win extra lives, for a price of ten Tings.
* Betilla the Fairy: A benevolent floating female fairy who failed to protect the Great Protoon from Mr Dark. She holds a very important role in the game – she gives Rayman new powers during the adventure.
* Tarayzan: Rayman's jungle counterpart, he gives Rayman a magic seed in return for giving him back his loincloth. One of the very few others to be seen from Rayman's species.
* The Photographer: This character acts as checkpoint. Should Rayman lose a life, he will return to where he last had his photograph taken.
* The Musician: Located high in the Blue Mountains with his family, his guitar had been crushed by a rock which Rayman must break to make him a new one out of stone. In return, the Musician gives Rayman the super helicopter power.
* Joe the Extra-Terrestrial: An alien that owns his own snack bar on the beach in the Caves of Skops. His neon lights have been unplugged, and Rayman must go down into the dark caves to plug them back in.

Enemies
* Bzzit: The first boss (or mid-boss) of the game, a large eyed mosquito, who lives in Anguish Lagoon in the Dream Forest. After Rayman defeats him he befriends Rayman and can be used as a vehicle. He later appears as a friend in Rayman Revolution.
* Moskito: Bzzit's stronger counterpart, and the boss of the Dream Forest.
* Mr Sax: Boss of Band Land, he is a walking saxophone that attacks by blowing explosive wrong notes.
* Mr Stone: Boss of the Blue Mountains, he is a man made of stone who constantly thumps on the ground and sends smaller stone creatures to attack Rayman.
* Space Mama: A very large woman who's the boss of Picture City. She is first represented as a stereotypical female opera singer, with a rolling pin which shoots out knives. In the second battle, her rolling pin shoots out lasers, while also using exploding pots and a washing machine.
* Mr Skops: A scorpion who is boss of the Caves of Skops. He attacks with his giant claws and tail which shoots a homing laserbeam.
* Bad Rayman: The result of a spell that Mr Dark casts in the Candy Château who resembles Rayman with a dark palette and mimics every move he makes throughout the stage. He can only be defeated by finishing a stage while letting him follow Rayman.
* Mr Dark: The main antagonist of the game, who steals Rayman's fist powers and casts strange spells on him. When he finally approaches him he would not really fight but rather trap Rayman with walls of fire. At this point the Electoons return the fist, but Mr Dark flees after, leaving him to actually fight hybrids of the previous bosses. His hideout is located in the Candy Château.
Soundtrack
The credits of Rayman list fifteen names under the heading 'Sound Effects and Music', leaving it unclear which people were involved in the creation of sound effects and which were involved in composing, arranging and programming the game's musical score. In August 2009, French musician Rémi Gazel posted in the RayTunes subforum of the Rayman Pirate-Community message board, and stated that he had composed almost the entire soundtrack of the game. The Atari Jaguar version features substantially different musical credits, but since most of the music in this version is the same, it can be determined that the names shared between this version and the others are the ones who composed the music itself. In addition to Rémi Gazel, known composers credited in all versions include Nathalie Drouet, Frédéric Prados, Olac Zalcman and possibly Frédéric Louvre.

Reception
Rayman received generally positive reviews from critics. The GameRankings review aggregator calculated scores of 77.00% and 75.00% for the MS-DOS and Sony PlayStation versions respectively, while the Sega Saturn and Atari Jaguar versions both received scores of 85.00%. The game's graphics and soundtrack received particular praise, along with its imaginative art style and complex level design. Criticism focused on its gameplay, which was regarded as solid but not particularly inventive or original. The game also drew criticism for its unforgiving difficulty; the player was required not only to perform very difficult platforming and combat manoeuvres, but also to locate and smash all 102 Electoon cages scattered throughout the game in order to unlock the final level, Mr Dark's Dare. Many players did not complete the game due to its difficulty.

In the United Kingdom, Rayman was the best-selling game to be released on the original PlayStation console.

Beyond Good & Evil is an action-adventure video game published by Ubi Soft in 2003. The game was created and designed by French games developer Michel Ancel, who also created the Rayman series. Beyond Good & Evil was developed concurrently with Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc. Ancel opted out of the latter game's development to work on BG&E; after spending several years on the Rayman games, he wished to move on to something different. The game was released to critical praise, but it was a commercial failure. A sequel is currently planned, but the developers had taken a break to work on Rayman Origins.

The game's soundtrack was composed by Christophe Héral, who also scored Rayman Origins.

Plot
Beyond Good & Evil takes place in the year 2435, on a once-idyllic mining planet named Hillys. The game's world is inhabited by a society composed of humans and anthropomorphic animals who co-exist peacefully. The architecture seen in the game is of a rustic European style, but more technologically advanced elements such as credit cards, email, hovercrafts and spaceships and are also featured.

The game's main protagonist is a young photojournalist named Jade (voiced by Jodi Forrest, who also provided the vocalisations for Tily, Razorwife and Globette in Rayman M and Rayman Rush). She lives in a lighthouse orphanage with her adoptive uncle – an anthropomorphic pig named Pey'j (voiced by David Gasman, the actor who has voiced Rayman since 1999). Like Rayman, Jade's origins are mysterious, and she is eventually revealed as a ‘chosen one’ with unique abilities. By the opening of the game, Hillys is beset my a monstrous alien force known as the DomZ, which comprise the majority of the enemies encountered throughout the game. Parallels can be drawn between the DomZ and the space-faring Robo-Pirates in Rayman 2. A dictatorial military group known as the Alpha Sections exercise an authoritarian regime over the Hyllian people under the guise of protecting them from the DomZ. Early on in the game, Jade is contacted by the IRIS Network, an underground organisation intent on uncovering the conspiracy between the DomZ and the Alpha Sections and liberating the people from their rule.

Gameplay
While primary a third-person action-adventure game, Beyond Good & Evil features elements of various other video game genres, including stealth, puzzle-solving and racing. Jade combats enemies with a Daï-jo staff, but also gains the ability to fire disc projectiles later in the game. A substantial number of the game's missions involve photography; Jade is often required to take photographs revealing the Alpha Sections' true nature, but optional side-quests involve photographing wildlife for rewards. At one point in the game, the player can come across a mosquito from the Rayman series, which is identified as ‘Aedes Raymanis’ (‘Fly from Rayman’). The world of Hyllis is presented as a single continuous environment broken only by load zones; there are no distinct levels, and the player must travel manually from place to place, as in Rayman Revolution. Jade's primary mode of transport is a hovercraft, which can be used to travel the watery streets of the main city and the surrounding seaside area.

One particularly overt parallel between Beyond Good & Evil and the Rayman series occurs during the game's final boss battle. The DomZ High Priest exerts a confusing influence on Jade, partially causing her to lose control over her body; this is represented by the player's directional controls being reversed. Exactly the same scenario occurs in the Candy Château at the end of the original Rayman; the villain, Mr Dark, casts a spell on Rayman which causes the player's directional controls to be reversed.
