Over the years, a considerable amount of information regarding the early development of the original Rayman game has been unveiled, mainly through beta versions leaked to the public and Rayman Designer hacking. An interview also revealed that Rayman had had his limbs removed due to technical limitations.
Super Nintendo Entertainment System version
On 4th July 2010, French retro-gaming magazine Pix’N Love revealed that, at the very beginning of its development, the original Rayman game was intended to be released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The magazine also contained an interview with Rayman creator Michel Ancel on the subject. This version of the game featured a two-player co-operative mode, in which one player controlled Rayman and the other player controlled what appears to be a female version of Rayman, not dissimilar from the girlfriend character once planned to appear in Rayman 4. Rayman's body is red rather than the purple used in the final game, and the girl's body is blue. Both characters look considerably bulkier than Rayman's final appearance. Three screenshots of the prototype (visible to the right) are currently available, and they show early versions of the Dream Forest and the Caves of Skops. One image shows the heroes battling against an early version of Mr Skops. There are glimpses of what appear to be early versions of Antitoons, plums, flying rings, Tings, mushrooms, Big Powers and the telescopic fist.

One of the screenshots shows a heads-up display which is completely different from the one used in the final game or either of the Atari Jaguar prototypes. This display shows both characters' heads, each with their own ‘Shield’ and ‘Power’ status indicated by bars. Rayman's section of the display shows a picture of a pink crystal with the name ‘Skops’ above it, and the girl's section of the display shows a question mark where the crystal can be displayed. The ‘Shield’ bar appears to indicate the characters' health, but the function of the ‘Power’ bar and the crystals remains unknown.

With the advent of more powerful, optical disc-based games systems, the SNES version of Rayman, though nearing completion, was cancelled. The game was reworked for the newer platforms, and became the Rayman 1 which is known today.

During a live stream of Rayman Legends, through which Michel Ancel replied to a question concerning the SNES version of Rayman 1. He stated that he was only in a team of two at the time the Super Nintendo version was being made, and that he was 'super excited', it being the first platform he'd ever worked on directly. It was painful and extensive procedure to build the game onto the cartridge though, and since he eventually got the full team together, the Super Nintendo couldn't do it justice.

Atari Jaguar – Engine Test
On 25th August 2008, a YouTube video showing an early prototype of the Jaguar version was uploaded. Two months later, this was leaked to the public along with 19 prototypes or other Jaguar titles. Along with this newly leaked prototype, there is also a beta version, which displays even more differences between the final version.

This version begins with Rayman dropping down in what appears to be a Dream Forest level, and feeling grumpy the second he hits the ground. Some elements in the game do not seem to be detected by Rayman, even the enemies such as the Hunters and Moskito, indicating poor collision detection. Interestingly, Rayman can also perform handstands and attack with his feet, and his fist can be charged up to be more powerful, which is displayed with an icon at the bottom left corner and the word ‘Nova’ next to it.

There is also a very early looking heads-up display which is centered rather than to the left and right, there are more hit points than normal and the word ‘POW’ is between that and the lives counter. An icon of an Antitoon is displayed instead of the Tings icon, and apparently it counts and represents how many enemies have been defeated. Only the lives counter and five of the hit points made it into the final game.

The game crashes when Rayman falls into a body of water.

{|
|-valign="top"
|
|
|

Atari Jaguar – Early Beta Version
This version has no specific prototype number, and it is unknown how much younger it is than the Jaguar's prototype, or whether or not this is the same beta that was used to advertise the game in magazines.

Several differences between this prototype and the final version are present, as well as glitches which may render the game unplayable, especially while running in a Jaguar emulator.

* The game begins with no title screen, but straight to the world map which has been shrunk to fit the whole screen. Instead of Rayman, an electoon pinpoints his position.
* There appear to be fewer levels available to choose from as they are unlocked, and the medallions look different.
* There is no text at all in the game other than ‘ACTION’ and ‘GAME OVER’.
* The game uses a completely different walk cycle for Rayman, making him look as if he is jogging.
* When he is hit by an enemy, the throwback is a lot longer than normal, and he squeaks.
* When Rayman runs up to an exit sign, he does not pose, but rather the game fades to the next stage or the map.
* The lives counter displays a single digit.
* Some enemies appear to float across the screen.
* The bullets shot by the hunters do not withdraw a hammer.
* Select maps are featured in the game. For example, when the Pink Plant Woods are passed, the player goes straight to the Swamps of Forgetfulness.
* Rayman's body moves differently when he receives a power from Betilla the Fairy.
* The Magician can be found and is paid with Tings as normal, but instead of normal bonus level, he takes the player to the breakout game.

A cage is a small breakable prison that contains innocent creatures who have been captured by hostile characters, such as Robo-Pirates or Hoodlums. It is Rayman's objective in all four major games, as well as some spin-offs such as Rayman 3 for the Game Boy Advance and Rayman: Hoodlums' Revenge, to destroy every single cage there is and release the prisoners inside them. Cages are possibly the most commonly recurring objects in the Rayman series.

Cages in Rayman
In “Rayman” there are 6 cages per level, and 102 overall that the player must break in order to advance to the final level of the game, the Candy Château. It is necessary for the player to backtrack to previous levels in order to reach every cage, once certain powers have been acquired.
The cages contain Electoons who have been imprisoned by the monsters roaming the world since the Great Protoon was stolen by Mister Dark.

There are 38 cages in the entire game which all contain Electoons. It is impossible to break all cages during the first visit of a level, as some are only accessible with a specific ability that Rayman has not acquired during his initial visit.

clear

Cages in Rayman 2
Unlike the original game, the player can advance to the final boss level without freeing all 80 cages. The cages in this game are a lot smaller this time, and are mostly hung from ceilings and posts, containing several kinds of creatures and spirits such as Teensies, Familiar Spirits (Rayman Revolution only), Denys, Ludivs (PlayStation version only), and both Yellow and Purple Lums. Also unlike Rayman, they do not appear by touching certain areas in a map, though some are hidden and can only be reached after Rayman receives certain powers, so the player would still have to backtrack. Rayman would know that one is near by hearing the sound of a prisoner crying for help. For every ten that he destroys, his life bar increases, though in Rayman Revolution, it indicates that Rayman has enough Familiar Spirits to unlock another of Ly's minigames (which, when completed, will increase Rayman's maximum health).

In the non-Sony versions of the game, cages contain Lums, with the end-of-level cages containing Teensies. In the PSX version, however, cages are far more abundant throughout the levels and when broken, a Ludiv, Greenbottle, or Deny escapes. After extending Rayman's life bar and refilling his health, they leave.

The introduction of Familiar Spirits in Rayman Revolution leads to an interesting discrepancy. In many levels in Rayman 2, the exit portal is opened by a Teensie locked in a cage near the end of the level. Therefore, these cages are also present in Rayman Revolution, for the sake of continuity. However, unlike in all other versions of Rayman 2, they do not count towards the total, since they do not contain Familiar Spirits.

Cages in Rayman 2 Forever
There are 30 cages in total scattered throughout the game, they all contain a Grand Minimus.

clear

Cages in Rayman M
Cages do not feature in a functional role in this game, however, cages resembling those from Rayman 2 can be seen adorning the Treasure Ship.

Cages in Rayman 3
This time, the only creatures that are trapped inside cages are various tribes of Teensies that have been captured by the Hoodlums, who have imprisoned them in 60 cages total. As in Rayman 2, not all of them have to be destroyed in order to advance to the final boss level. Akin to the original Rayman, each cage that is destroyed fills up a medallion, though this time when each medallion is filled with 6 cages, the size of Rayman's life bar increases, giving him a higher maximum of health. The captive Teensies will often reward Rayman when be breaks their cages, either with a Laser-Washing Powder power-up, or with jewels that the hero can collect to obtain points, and then disappear after a quick remark.

There are two types of cage seen in the course of the game, they differ only in appearance however, they both have the same effect when broken. The first type of cage is the one most commonly seen throughout the course of the game, these cages are cubic in shape, and are constructed with wood and metal. They also have a balloon adorned with the Hoodlum emblem, through which the actual cage is suspended in midair. These cage have some resemblance to a bird cage.

The second type of cage is exclusively found in the Land of the Livid Dead, these have a more simplistic look, made of only wood, with bars preventing the captive Griskin from escaping, who are the only type of Teensy to be seen in this type of cage. Much like the main type of cage, these cages are also suspended from a balloon, but with a more dull colouration and with no Hoodlum emblem.

In Rayman 3 HD, breaking all cages will reward the player with the Hero of the Teensies achievement.

In these versions, the cages look identical to those featured in Rayman 2, they can either be suspended from a chain, or stood upon a platform or ground. No prisoner is seen emerging from these cages when broken.

In the the Game Boy Advance version, there are 50 cages scattered throughout the game, but not every level contains a cage. Usually, in levels that contain cages, there will be four to find. Levels that have less than four cages are Wanderwood Forest (with three cages), Prickly Passage (with two cages), Boulder Brink (with two cages) and Wretched Ruins (with three cages).

In the Symbian version, there are merely 12 cages to break in total.

The cages in this game are identical to the main type of cage seen in the console versions of Rayman 3. Rayman must break all cages in a level to obtain 100% completion, as they go towards that tally. There are nine levels that cages can be found, with four per level, this gives a total of 36 cages to locate throughout the course of the game.

Much like in Rayman 2 and the console version of Rayman 3, Teensies are found locked in cages, and will call for help when Rayman is close to them. Much like in the console versions of Rayman 3, Teensies will make a quick remark once freed, before disappearing, leaving behind a reward for Rayman.
Cages have a similar appearance to those that appeared In the the Game Boy Advance and Symbian versions of Rayman 3, and thus, similar to those from Rayman 2. There are a total of 60 cages that are scattered throughout the game, in levels that contain cages, there are four to be found, making for 15 levels that contain cages.
There are 108 cages in Rayman Origins - 62 of which are hidden away in hidden chambers - each with a group of imprisoned Electoons - and the other 46 are located at the end of the levels. These cages are usually surrounded by a forcefield tied to several enemies, and once the enemies are defeated, the forcefield disappears. There are also 5 levels - the last levels from the last 5 worlds - where the medallion contains one slot which has an encarved cage symbol, although these levels don't contain any cage. Instead of breaking a cage at the end of the level, the player can fill these slots with Electoons by defeating each boss from these five worlds. The rest of Electoons are received through other means: 31 for winning time trials and 102 for collecting a specific amount of Lum (Rayman Origins)s in each level and then trading them to the Magician.

The cages are the most resistant objects in Rayman Origins. Every cage has two padlocks, and each padlock takes 4 continuous slaps to be broken (The fourth slap is always faster and stronger). Cages are the only exception of Rayman's charging ability, as they can be broken easily with a charged fist or a crush attack.
There are a total of 700 Teensies that have been captured in Rayman Legends, most of which can be found in the various levels, some are imprisoned in the traditional cages, and others tied to a simple post. However, some captured Teensies cannot be freed in the traditional manner, and are instead found by winning them via Lucky Ticket.
