Rayman's species is an unnamed race of limbless creatures native to the Glade of Dreams.

Members of Rayman's species lack arms, legs and necks; instead, their heads, bodies, hands and feet float, connected only by some invisible force. They typically have large, rounded noses and eyes.

In Rayman
In the original game, almost every character is limbless. Several friendly supporting characters are clearly members of Rayman's species. Many other characters and enemies may also be members, though most bear some differences. It can be inferred that the valley in which the game takes place has a relatively high population of Rayman's species. Early on in the development of the game, when it was intended as a Super Nintendo title, the developers planned to feature a two-player co-operative mode, with the second player taking on the role of Rayman's female companion.

In Rayman 2: The Great Escape
In Rayman 2: The Great Escape, very few characters from the original game return. For the most part, the game features a brand-new cast of characters. Aside from Rayman himself, no members of Rayman's species appear. The game's manual states that, when Rayman first appeared, the other inhabitants of the Glade of Dreams were amazed by his limblessness, suggesting that Rayman's species is very rare and not well-known. Upon close examination, some of the characters in this game, including Globox and the Teensies, are semi-limbless; their feet float with no legs joining them to their bodies.

In Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
In Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc, many characters from Rayman 2 return, but again the cast of the original game is largely overlooked, and no new characters of Rayman's species appear. However, the game does contain references to them. In the Fairy Council, the player can find Garden Raygnomes: limbless garden gnomes with a strong resemblance to Rayman's species. The developers of the game stated that they considered giving Rayman himself limbs, but decided that this would be too great a divergence for the series.

In Rayman Origins
In Rayman Origins, many characters from the original game appear for the first time in the series's sixteen-year history. However, the developers made some effort to avoid the subject of Rayman's species, perhaps to maintain the unique status held by Rayman in Rayman 2 and Rayman 3. Characters who were originally limbless, like Betilla the Fairy, Hunters, Antitoons and Livingstones now have arms and legs. Some characters, like the Magician and the Photographer, have been changed to Teensies to better fit the style established in the previous sequels. However, some characters, like Electoons, stone men and other members of Rayman's species remain as limbless as they were in the original.

Rayman Origins also gives an in-story explanation for Rayman's limblessness. In the distant past, Rayman was created by Betilla the Fairy and her nymph sisters in order to defeat Jano and preserve the balance of the world. However, on their way to the ritual, the nymphs accidentally lost a bag of Lums. As a result, Rayman was born incomplete: missing arms, legs and neck.

At one point in the development of Rayman Origins, Tarayzan from the original game was intended to be a playable character. As a skin for Rayman, Tarayzan would have remained limbless. Unused dialogue from the game reveals that he was meant to be Rayman's cousin, hinting that Tarayzan would also have been created by the nymphs. The same may hold true for the other members of Rayman's species.

When the player pulls on the Bubble Dreamer's beard while controlling Rayman, he expresses mild surprise that Rayman is still limbless, and assures him that the nymphs will get their act together eventually. This seems to suggest that it is possible for members of Rayman's species to gain limbs; it may be that this is what happened to the other returning characters from the original game.

In the PlayStation Vita version of the game, the player can unlock two hidden mosaics by collecting relics. One mosaic tells a story about Globox's past, while the other tells a story about Rayman's history. According to the mosaic, Rayman was originally bald, and had a wife or girlfriend who was a member of his own species. While the couple slept on a forest floor, a group of tiny creatures, each one a living strand of blonde hair, crept up on Rayman and fused themselves to his bald head. Rayman's female companion, terrified and confused, attempted to cut Rayman's hair with a gigantic pair of scissors, but the hair creatures, afraid of their nefarious fate, pulled Rayman's head and body to escape with him, accidentally making him fall off a cliff. Much to Rayman's surprise, his new hair activated its helicopter ability for the first time, flying him to safety. It is unknown what happened to Rayman's partner, as she is never seen or mentioned again.

In other games
In Rayman Raving Rabbids, the developers intended Rayman to have a girlfriend, Simohne, whom he would have to rescue from the Rabbids. Concept artwork suggests that the game would have parodied Star Wars to some extent.

In Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, he is referred to as an eggplant.

In other media
In Rayman: The Animated Series, he is called "thing" and "freak", appearing to be the only one of his kind.

In Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, Rayman travels to the Earth dimension from what Eden calls "Dimension X". Here, he is referred to as an alien, and "alien scum" derogatorily. He struggled to fit in, being the only one of his kind.

Bad Rayman, also known as Dark Rayman, is an enemy which appears in the original Rayman game, its Game Boy Color remake, its Game Boy Advance port, in Rayman Junior and in Rayman Designer.

Description
Bad Rayman is a clone of Rayman, magically created by Mr Dark in an attempt to destroy the original.

His appearance is very similar to that of Rayman, but with different colouration. He seems to have somehow inherited Mr Dark's glowing yellow eyes. In the original Rayman game, Bad Rayman's skin is grey, his hair and neckerchief are pink, his gloves are light blue, and his shirt and shoes are dark blue. He also has a green tongue, which can be noticed by having him make a grimace in Rayman Junior or Rayman Designer.

In the original Rayman
Bad Rayman first appears at a very late point in all versions of the original Rayman game except for the Atari Jaguar version, when the real Rayman finally reaches the second part of Mr Dark's Dare in Candy Château, and has a spell cast upon him by Mr Dark. The evil double appears behind him, and follows him wherever he goes as well as copying his actions. Rayman cannot stand still for too long at this point, because he and the double will die instantly if they come to close contact with each other. However, Bad Rayman will die as soon as the real Rayman reaches the exit in the area.

In Rayman Advance, Bad Rayman is called Dark Rayman, which has fuelled numerous debates on his real name, and the nature of the relationship between him and the playable character in Rayman Arena.

In Rayman Junior
In Rayman Junior, Bad Rayman appears in the penultimate level, Tasty Chase. Betilla the Fairy refers to him as Rayman's Wicked Double. However, he does not chase Rayman during the whole level, but only makes short appearances and disappears after a certain distance.

In the Game Boy Color version of Rayman
Bad Rayman also makes appearances in the Game Boy Color version of Rayman, in which he appears in a slightly different colour scheme; his shoes and gloves are yellow, and his skin is darker than Rayman's. He is found towards the end of the game, in the Arcane Forest. Bad Rayman behaves in the same way as he did in the original game - chasing, copying, and causing death upon touch. But he doesn't die if he manages to kill Rayman, apart if the hero falls into a chasm.

When Rayman reaches the exit in the area, Bad Rayman doesn't disappear, unlike in the original game. And as he is never seen again in the game, his fate remains unknown.

It is possible to kill Bad Rayman in this game, by flying above a specific floor of red spikes.

In a screenshot from the manual showing an early version of the game, Bad Rayman is shown to originally have been of a different color.
Trivia
Raymesis
* Bad Rayman's coloration suggests he inspired the Raymesis character and skin. Similarities include glowing yellow eyes, purple hair, blue shoes and blue clothing. Differences include a pink neckerchief rather than a turquoise hoodie.
Raymesis, also known as DarkRay, Rayman Alter Ego and Dark Rayman, is a playable character in Rayman Origins, Rayman Jungle Run, Rayman Legends, Rayman Fiesta Run, Rayman Adventures and Rayman Mini.

Description
Raymesis' appearance is very similar to that of Rayman, but with different colouration. He has glowing yellow eyes, a purple tongue, purple-grey skin, purple hair, cyan hood and shoes, light blue gloves, and a dark blue shirt.

Role in the games
Rayman Origins
Raymesis appears in Rayman Origins as a playable character. To unlock him, 220 cages' worth of Electoons are required.

The Bubble Dreamer nicknames him DarkRay and makes fun of his ugliness. He also mentions that he was created by Mr Dark – this is one of the game's few references to the original Rayman antagonist. It is unclear whether the Bubble Dreamer confuses Raymesis with Bad Rayman or simply makes a joke about their resemblance (he looks almost identical to Rayman's evil clone created by Mr Dark in the original game), or if the two are linked in some other way, even them being the same character.
Rayman Jungle Run
Raymesis is part of the three characters available in the downloadable content of Rayman Jungle Run, along with Globox and Raybox.

Raymesis returns as a playable character in Rayman Legends.

This is where his name is revealed, as well as the fact that he is a member of Rayman's species who wants to ruin Rayman's reputation.

Rayman Fiesta Run
Raymesis is also a playable character in Rayman Fiesta Run.

An image of him can be obtained in the gallery. It calls him 'Rayman Alter Ego', while he is named 'Dark Rayman' in the game files.

(Upon close examination, some of the characters in this game, including Globox and the Teensies, are semi-limbless; their feet float with no legs joining them to their bodies.)

However, some characters, like Electoons, stone men and Bad Rayman remain as limbless as they were in the original.

Unused dialogue from the game reveals that Tarayzan is Rayman's cousin, hinting that Tarayzan was also created by the nymphs. The same may hold true for the other members of Rayman's species.

When the player pulls on the Bubble Dreamer's beard while controlling Rayman, the Bubble Dreamer expresses mild surprise that Rayman is still limbless, and assures Rayman that the nymphs will get their act together eventually.

The four Kings – Carnivora, the Mocking Bird, El Stomacho and Creveton – are the rulers of the four lands that compose the Glade of Dreams in Rayman Origins. When Bubble Dreamer started having nightmares again, the Kings fell under their influence, and became gigantic, evil monsters. Rayman and his friends must track down these four monsters and defeat them. When they do, the monsters revert to the small, benevolent creatures they originally were, and begin projecting a ray of energy across the sea to the Dreamer's Door. These rays are focused by four nymphs, each of whom corresponds to one of the Kings. When the four Kings have been freed and enough Electoons have been collected, the Dreamer's Door opens, allowing the heroes to pass through to the Moody Clouds – the final land of the main game. In The Reveal, the final part of this land, the heroes must fight mechanical recreations of Carnivora and the Mocking Bird (neither of which are quite as powerful as the original).

In Mystical Pique, the level preceding and connected to Moody Clouds, the heroes encounter the Golem, an enormous stone monster whom they must defeat. He appears to be the ruler of his land, but does not seem to be counted as one of the Kings. When defeated, the Golem simply falls apart rather than reverting into a friendly character.

The Kings bear a certain plot resemblance to the bosses of the original Rayman, in that each boss is strongly associated with their own land, and reverts to a friendly state once they have been defeated. This may mean that the original game's bosses were corrupted by the influence of Polokus's nightmares, which were presumably the result of Mr Dark stealing the Great Protoon and imbalancing the Glade of Dreams. The Kings also resemble the Guardians of the four Masks of Polokus in Rayman 2, in that their number is four. The Kings are considerably smaller than most of the creatures that they rule, slightly resembling Gumsi, the king of the Knaaren from Rayman 3.
Raydoom is a demonic being who has come to partake in the Halloween holiday challenges. Raydoom's basic description matches that of Rayman, minus the hood and hoodie strings. The major difference is that Raydoom appears to be made out of molten rock, with red hot magma creaking out of his black rock head, body, hands, and shoes.
Large-eyed fish are fish from the original game that are orange with white stripes, and have oversized eyes. They appear in the Caves of Skops, in the last phase of Eat at Joe's. They are one of three species of fish in these waters. Large-eyed fish are the only ones who are inoffensive and do not interact with anything. They are barely noticeable in all versions except in the PlayStation version of the game, where the water is transparent. They swim back and forth passively over a short distance and serve as decorative background characters. They may function as a distraction from knowing where the aggressive Large-mouthed fish will attack the player.
The aim is to not beat Ly (though it is possible), who serves only as a guide, but to get to the end before the time runs out. The available time can be extended by walking over glowing lily pads that are scattered along the path. When Rayman gets to the end, he is rewarded with maximum health. The other optional bonus level is the Walk of Power, which is a sequel to the Walk of Life.

Original version
In the original version of the game, the Walk of Life is accessed via the Bayou and requires 60 Yellow Lums to enter. At the beginning of the Walk, there is a slope to slide down (Ly just runs down it), ending with a pit that is laced with cobwebs to bounce on. Rayman and Ly run through a waterfall and into a canyon where the walls on the other side of a set of weak wooden bridges are covered in vines. At the top, they drop down from a strong wooden plank onto another, run through a passage with a bouncing cobweb at the middle and jump from two cliffs to the ground. After another passage, there are more, smaller cliffs ending with the final cobweb, and then they make it to the end, where Ly performs a magical ritual and gives him maximum health regardless of whether he has beaten his time record.

There are no cages in this level, as it is a bonus. After visiting it once, it becomes accessible directly from the Hall of Doors, without having to enter the Bayou first.
Dreamcast version
This level is identical to that of the original version. Here also, the level must be accessed through the Bayou on the first visit, but later can be entered directly from the Isle of Doors.
PlayStation version
In the PlayStation version, this level is linked to the Bayou in the Hall of Doors, and contains 30 Yellow Lums. 100 Yellow Lums are needed to access it, otherwise the Spiral Door leading to this world will not appear in the Hall of Doors. Much of the level design here remains the same as that in the original version, but with the following differences:

* Rayman does not slide automatically down the slope at the beginning, and there are more cobwebs to jump on.
* Where the canyon with the breakable wooden planks would be, there is now a chasm trailed with Purple Lums. This part of the level also takes to the vine wall on Rayman's left, rather than his right in the other versions.
* At the end, Ly will not perform her magical physically, neither will a Teensie appear, and Rayman will walk to the Spiral Door automatically.
PlayStation 2 version
In Rayman Revolution, the Walk of Life was renamed to Racing Challenge 1 in the menu and The Time Race #1 at the start of the level, and is accessed through any of Ly's three locations - her house, her stele and her cave. It is unlocked by saving half of the 80 Familiar Spirits. Instead of picking up Yellow Lums, Rayman has to pick up 25 Red Lums. Upon completion, Rayman's lifebar is extended, provided that Rayman picked up all of the Red Lums along the way. Ly will not perform her magic physically here; nor will a Teensie appear to take Rayman away. The player is then given the choice to restart the race or to return to the stone Rayman entered from.

|-
|

Trivia
*Rayman runs exactly 20% faster in this level and the Walk of Power than in any other level in the game.
Original version
In the original version of the game, the Walk of Power is accessed via the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava. After Rayman collects a certain amount of Yellow Lums, he will be able to enter. At the beginning of the walk, Rayman will have to jump over to several platforms through streams, accompanied by a waterfall. After passing through, Rayman then has to cross over a small river by jumping on a horizontal moving lily pad (Ly is able pass it by making a long jump over to the next platform without the assistance of the lily pad). As Rayman crosses the river, he now helicopters over some pits to a very large river. Now he needs to take advantage of the lily pads in order to get across to the end, where Ly will meet him to perform a magical ritual. It is the same ritual as done in the Walk of Life; she gives him three Power Fists regardless of whether he has beaten his time record.

There are no cages in this level, as it is a bonus. After visiting it once, it becomes accessible directly from the Hall of Doors, without having to enter the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava first.
In Rayman Revolution, the Walk of Power was renamed to Racing Challenge 2 in the menu, and The Time Race #2 at the start of the level, and is accessed through any of Ly's three locations. The minigame is unlocked by saving 60 of the all 80 Familiar Spirits in the game. Instead of picking up Yellow Lums, Rayman has to pick up 25 Red Lums. Upon completion of this 'minigame', Rayman is rewarded an extended lifebar, provided that he has picked up all of the Red Lums. Ly will not perform her magic physically here; nor will a Teensie appear to take Rayman away. The player is then given the choice to restart the race or to return to the stone Rayman entered from.

Rayman 4 is an unreleased 3D platform game developed for Ubisoft by Phoenix Studio. Had it not been cancelled, Rayman 4 would have been the first game in the main Rayman series not to be developed by the Ubisoft Montpellier studio.

The project had its beginnings in 2005, when concept art was created for various environments and characters. The story is largely unknown, but an early draft may have existed at this point. An unknown amount of programming, modelling, texturing and special effects creation was carried out during the pre-production of the game. The project was discontinued after four months of development.

Most of what is known about Phoenix's Rayman 4 comes from early artwork, which has been leaked gradually in the years since the game's cancellation. It depicts much more surreal and colourful environments than those which were seen in early Rayman Raving Rabbids images and trailers; many of these Rayman 4 environments were 3D recreations of areas from the original Rayman game.

In May 2006, Ubisoft unveiled Rayman Raving Rabbids, a new 3D platformer being developed by Ubisoft Montpellier under the direction of series creator Michel Ancel. There has been much confusion regarding the relationship of these games, since Rayman 4 was also the working title of Rayman Raving Rabbids. This confusion was furthered by the Game Boy Advance version of Rayman Raving Rabbids, which incorporated aspects of both cancelled games. Since the cancellation of Phoenix's Rayman 4 was followed quickly by the development of Ubisoft Montpellier's Rayman 4, there may have been some connection between the two, but this remains unconfirmed.

Plot
The plot of Rayman 4 is mostly unknown, though some story elements have been leaked to the public. The game is said to have been based around the idea of Rayman partaking in a training camp for video game heroes where he could interact with other Ubisoft characters including The Prince of Persias titular character and Jade of Beyond Good and Evil. Dark Rayman was set to make an appearance, not in person but rather to be portrayed as a glitch in the program; a corrupt part of the game bent on taking revenge on the characters. It appears that the game was to be a reboot/retelling of the original Rayman game, and would have involved Rayman revisiting numerous locations from the original game recreated in 3D and to a high level of accuracy. This contrasts with Rayman Origins, where the heroes explore locations based on the same themes as those of the original game, but with distinct differences; for example, the Desert of Dijiridoos is evidently based on Band Land, but is clearly not the same place.

One piece of Rayman 4 artwork shows Rayman standing in a vast, cathedral-like area, decorated with stained-glass windows and statues which depict 'Dark Rayman'. It could be speculated that this was to be the location for an encounter or battle with Dark Rayman.

Gameplay
Little is known about the gameplay of Rayman 4, but the concept artwork makes it clear that it was intended to be a 3D platformer and screenshots from the development build seem to point toward gameplay being similar to that of Rayman 3. Phoenix had planned to make the game slightly easier than earlier installments to increase the mass appeal of the series, having said in their design documents that "100% of players should be able to finish it".

It seems that one of the game's key features was Rayman's transformation into various guises, each one granting a unique power. Concept art shows Rayman in various forms: regular Rayman, mime Rayman, chewing-gum Rayman, bubble Rayman, invisible Rayman, hedgehog Rayman, super helicopter Rayman, ghost Rayman, torch Rayman, Bigfoot Rayman, and boxing Rayman. These forms contrast with the costumes seen in Rayman 3, as it seems that Rayman would have gained powers by undergoing physical transformations rather than donning new gear. It is unknown which of these power ideas would have survived to the final stage of the game's development.
Guillaume Bonamy concept art
In 2009, several pieces of artwork from 2005 were published on videogame concept artist Guillaume Bonamy's portfolio. They feature three-dimensional versions of Band Land and Picture City, as well as new environments called le Palais Temporel (the Temporal Palace), le Monde Organique (the Organic World) and an unnamed world of toys. While the latter two new environments were eventually adapted for the Game Boy Advance version of Rayman Raving Rabbids, the Temporal Palace was seemingly abandoned.
In 2012, several pieces of Rayman 4 artwork were posted on the portfolio of concept artist Emeline Bellemin. These images, which were drawn by artist Yann Le Pon and coloured by Bellemin, showed further illustrations of the three-dimensional Picture City, as well as images of the Organic Cavern and several new environments. Other images have been posted on the site of Jean-Marie Godeau, the game's artistic director.
In the book L'Histoire de Rayman, it was revealed that the Robo-Pirates and Livingstones were planned to return in Rayman 4. There is also concept art of a young human girl named Cielle who was intended to appear in the game. It is unknown what her role was to be in the game or if she was intended to be playable.
In March 2021, a render of a 3D environment with the caption "Rayman prototype" was found on the website of Gaël Chaize, who was an art director and 3D modeling artist at Phoenix Studio. It shows a forest previously depicted in concept art by Yan Le Pon, Emeline Bellemin and Jean-Marie Godeau.
In April 2021, a former employee of the now defunct game studio Phoenix Interactive/Phoenix Studio (not to be confused with Phoenix Interactive Entertainment), the studio that worked on the original Rayman 4 prototype, released some animations tests that they worked on for the project. ===Allegedly leaked 3D renders===
On October 5 2021, renders captured in Autodesk 3ds Max of what appears to be an early build of the game were published on Twitter, having allegedly been leaked by a former developer who wishes to remain anonymous. While their authenticity remains to be established, they show clear similarities with previously released concept art as well as the Game Boy Advance version of Rayman Raving Rabbids.

Rigatoni is the main antagonist of Rayman: The Animated Series, and only appears in this media. He is the ringmaster of a flying circus that he takes to various places of the Glade of Dreams, and along the way he orders his lackey, Admiral Razorbeard, to capture strange creatures as slaves for his circus. His most beloved circus freak is Lac-Mac, who is the star of his show, to the point where he seems to have some disturbing fascination with him.

He is an egotistical and greedy character, perhaps more so than Razorbeard, who treats his slaves very badly, and for fears that they will escape or get stolen, his circus has a large CCTV system which he uses to keep an eye on them. When Rayman sets himself and his friends free, Rigatoni instantly brands them all as criminals, and gets in contact with Inspector Grub to track them down in Aeropolis. He does not appear in any more episodes after the first episode, Lac-Mac Napping. He is voiced by Danny Mann.

Trivia
* Despite the fact that Rigatoni is a non-game character, he appears on a page in the collector's sticker book which came free with several copies of Rayman for the Game Boy Color. There is also a typo in this that spells his name as "Regatoni".
* His name is derived from a type of pasta, which suits the Italian Ringmaster stereotype, though he has more of a Brooklyn accent.
* Rigatoni bears a resemblance to a Hunter from Rayman.
