Darkroots, also known simply as Roots, are invincible enemies in Rayman Origins, Rayman Jungle Run, Rayman Legends and Rayman Fiesta Run. They, along with a group of nightmarish Darktoons and Psychlops are sent by a Granny from the Land of the Livid Dead to invade the Glade of Dreams. They are dark blue tentacle-like creatures, with tons of spikes and non-blinking eyes. They appear from nowhere, constantly growing and working as obstacles for Rayman and his friends.

They appear to be based on nettles, other root-like enemies from the Rayman series.

In Rayman Origins and its spin-offs

Darkroots feature as one of the various creatures and plants to have risen from the Land of the Livid Dead to invade the Glade of Dreams.

They can be encountered as static obstacles, but some will bend in place, requiring careful and skilled movement in order to prevent contact being made, which will deal damage to the heroes. Some can even be seen emerging from the ground, and thus require good timing to avoid. They can also emerge and prevent backtracking in a level by blocking off areas once passed.

Darkroots can vary in appearance, while they all share a common tentacle-like shape, their colouration and detailing can differ. Darkroots can be found in black, grey and purple varieties, and some can be seen with appendages extruding from the main body. Red Darkroots, seemingly representing arteries, can be found inside El Stomacho in the level My Heartburn's for You.

In Rayman Jungle Run

The black variety of Darkroot can be seen in various levels, playing the same role as obstacles for Rayman to avoid.

In Rayman Legends and its spin-offs

Darkroots, as they appear in the Back to Origins levels in Rayman Legends.
The main variety of Darkroot, from Rayman Legends.

Darkroots return, but with greater variations in appearance. They have spread throughout the Glade of Dreams during the 100 year nap that the heroes had taken between Rayman Origins and the game. They can be found in every world of the game, playing the same role as harmful obstacles that will try to damage the heroes by out-manoeuvring them.

Appearance

Darkroots are green in this game, with yellow spikes, and unlike their Rayman Origins brethren, sport no eyes whatsoever. In the Back to Origins, the Darkroots are either the new green versions, or the Darkroots as they appeared in Tricky Winds. In Freaking Flipper, the Darkroots that appear resemble their original counterparts from Rayman Origins, but without the eyes.

The Darkroots that featured in Rayman Origins return in their respective levels which appear in the Back to Origins levels.

In Rayman Fiesta Run

Darkroots appear in levels with the same appearance they had in Rayman Origins. They play the same role as in past titles, where they will act as obstacles that will damage the hero should they come into contact with them.
